Mark Stone comp for Meier

Description
At 2019 deadline, the ask for an extended Mark Stone was four assets including a top prospect and a 1st. They got Erik Brannstrom and a 2nd... since his AAV demands scared everyone except Vegas off.

The higher Timo’s number goes up, the fewer will bid. (Last I saw, he wants at least $9m).

Maybe not by Devils, or with this exact amount, but I got a feeling Sharks are about get the short end on this deal based on Meier contract.

2023 deadline deal.

It has been reported that Meier's contract demands are well above $9 million, which could limit the trade return for San Jose. If his expectations are for top dollar, then the fair comp to use here is probably Mark Stone, who was traded to Vegas at 2019 deadline by Ottawa.

At the time of the deal, Stone was the NHL leader in Goals-above-Replacement (GAR) and the expectations were for a massive return for Ottawa. BOS, CGY, NSH, NYI and WPG were the most common teams linked to him before deadline. The asking price at the time was " four assets, including a first-round pick and an A-level prospect" according to Fourth Period. Pat Steinberg said the ask from Calgary was "multiple 1sts, one of Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington, and more". From others, Craig Custance said it was "at least two first-round picks" and more.

But the actual return was a lot less than expected since Stone was uncertain to sign and wanted top dollar. Erik Brannstrom, who at the time was The Athletic's 19th best from outside the NHL, and a pick in the late 2nd round.

Meier’s current market worth is $10.8 mil, $9 mil is more than fair. A trade 4 years ago isn’t a great comp especially when he was traded as a rental without an extension in place. If this is the offer sharks just keep him

Think that makes a lot of sense. Only difference I can see, from your breakdown at least is BUF and NJD can both make big money work for at least a few years (BUF I'm convinced can for 4, not sure about NJ). Could the same be said about the 5 interested in Stone at the time?

Some rumored asks for Stone, pre-deadline

For Boston: DeBrusk, Donato, Heinen or JFK, 1st (link)
NHL Network: Four pieces including two 1sts, two Grade-A prospects (link)
Elliotte Friedman: "big" (link)
Pat Steinberg on Calgary: "multiple 1sts + one of Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington + more" (link)
Fourth Period: "four assets, including a first-round pick and an A-level prospect." (link)
The Athletic: "at least two first-round picks" (link)

They all wanted him long-term...and the traded asks were based on Stone coming with extension, but he only agreed to sign Vegas offer, so Ottawa dealt him there for paltry return.

I'd have to look at how much cap space they had.

wasnt the return so low on mark stone because he did not want to extend with most of the teams interested in him?

Yes, they weren't willing to meet his contract demands.

For instance, per Friedman, Winnipeg spoke to his agent and tried to get him signed, but couldn't. They had to make cuts (Trouba) that summer.

Meanwhile according to 32TP the Meier return is gonna look like the DeBrincat return, and people on this site are saying Holtz+1st+more isn't enough

Yeah having the cap flexibility was what i was trying to get at. That's a pretty great pull from you though, I haven't seen that comp before and it's such a similar situation.

Some of these offers are getting crazy. Devils fans expected a lot for Hall, Palmieri, etc…so maybe we are just getting our own medicine.

(I don’t think it would include Holtz though)

I would be ecstatic if this was the price though I do feel it’s not enough. I think it needs another pick or maybe make the 2nd a 1st but this was excellent work, the situations seem similar. Was Stone an RFA when he was traded?

Get work on providing links and good Intel. I really hope Meier goes to NJ and I think a good price would be Muk and a 1st, although you have a second there. I could maybe see Shara going the other way as I feel a forward needs to be sent out, that might bring the pick down a bit as well.

Honestly I feel like Shara, Muk and a second would be a good return for SJ for Meier with an extension.

Brannstrom was one of the best regarded prospects in the league then, certainly a lot more than Muk. A real comparision is probably Holtz and a second

Corey Pronman had Brannstrom as 19th best prospect from outside the NHL in January 2019.

Same guy has Mukhamadullin as 22nd best prospect from outside the NHL in January 2023.

But if someone wants to make the case it’s Holtz, they can. I personally don’t believe Fitzgerald makes him available. And I think the point stays the same….if Meier wants top dollar, San Jose could get the short end of the stick.

Stone's ask was a lot scarier back then. I don't think 9m for Timo is.
NJ probably has the best chance to make a deal fair for both sides considering Fitz and Grier's history, and that it's easy to imagine that NJ would likely be Timo's #1 desired location due to how well they are playing and Hischier. I don't think Grier would be forced into a deal like this.
A Muk+2nd only package for Meier would be way less useful to the team compared to extending Meier as a core piece to rebuild around.
Holtz makes a lot of sense coming back for future scoring needs, but I don't think it has to be a line in the sand. Grier will probably ask NJ for both a F and D prospects coming back, especially RD since having to dish Merks. This assumes Fitz doesn't try grabbing another top-6 winger on the market if Meier is too expensive, but his statements seemed to indicate he's willing to dish out serious assets.

I don't disagree with any of it. All Fitzy's statements point to guy like Meier.

The point above was more about Meier's contract demands (now said to be "starting with nine" or "well north of nine") may begin to water down the return for the Sharks. Not just from NJD, but from wherever he goes. And I used Stone as the comp/example of when this has happened before.

With $9m contract, I imagine, they could still some get something: 2023 1st (between 17-32), top-100 prospect (maybe 21-50 range), and later pick or reserve prospect.

Was Stone an RFA when he was traded?

No, he was pending UFA.
The thing is that out of 32 teams in the league, only one would have any interest in qualifying Meier at 10m, that team being the Sharks themselves.
Therefore, for all intents and purposes, Meier is a pending UFA with control of picking his next destination, just like Mark Stone.

He was a pending UFA but wanted an 8-year extension, so was being shopped as 1+8, and allowed to speak with other clubs about new contract.

Yes, Meier doesn't carry all the same benefits as other RFA because of that QO, so he is being valued like a pending UFA who is seeking an extension. Like Stone.
