There is literally zero chance any salary is retained on a 5 year deal. You already have Palat that is older and more injury prone at big money, dont act like they wouldnt jump all over Josh

I dunno man, we all said the same about the Chiarot trade and look what happened.

We all know Anderson is about as useful on the ice as hedgehogs are in a condom factory, but for some reason GMs still like guys like him. Overpayment is to be expected (and for me personally, anything over a 3rd is already an overpayment for him, anything added to that is just making things worse).

Given that Hughes has Anderson on a high standard, I don't think he'll be moving him for cheap either. So if NJ wants him, for whatever reason...it's going to cost them. I can see them spending a 2023 1st for him, but I can't really justify it, since there's absolutely nothing to justify.

Substitute Sean Walker for Jordan Spence and Joel Edmundson with 50% retention for seventh defenseman Chris Wideman and add your 2023 second and then Los Angeles might consider that.

Maybe. But even then why commit 2.75m of cap to a guy that's basically topping out as a 4th liner / 13th forward for the duration of his tenure here.

I agree with you he is not being traded. But there isn't hatred for Josh. It's the illogic of any team giving up good assets for him and then fitting in a 5.5m X 4 years (after this season) into their cap.
Lot better value for 5.5m in the summer than Anderson. Now, something around a retained Anderson makes trade sense for NJ, but then it really doesn't benefit Montreal much.

Think it simply means including a cap dump. In NJ's case, it'd likely be Johnsson.

Cap is increasing for up to 4 million for next year which will make acquiring Anderson (or any guy with higher pay and longer contract) more feasible.

The thing I have a such a hard time understanding is why Habs fans (or anyone for that matter) think it’s a good idea to trade for Anderson and his contract when much superior wingers can be found in FA to similar or lesser cap hit.
Why going through the bother of trading 3 quite good prospects and a 2nd for a middling player with term when the Devils might just as well try for Kuzmenko or Bunting in FA?

For 3 reasons I wager

1) he's got something GMs like, size in this case
2) he could be considered available due to Habs rebuilding
3) in terms of age he could be considered a prime target for a team that thinks they need to improve in various areas now and in the long term (not that I think Anderson would improve anyone)

I agree that adding guys like them makes much more sense, but they'd likely only become available in the offseason.

Two further thoughts about that contract: it's $23.5 million in actual cash, ALL of which is salary (i.e., not signing bonuses), which means that a buyout is more expensive. Those aren't major factors, but they ARE negative ones . . .
