Description
Yes I realize that Ottawa fans don’t want to give up Pinto and Toronto fans don’t want to give up Niemela. I’m just doing this for fun theorizing. No need to bury me in the comments.

Leafs will have trouble slotting in a 6m dman for this year or next. If Min retains a bit or if a 3rd team is involved on the retention, I am sure they can make this work.

The Leafs would be much more interested in this type of team (with retention) at the deadline. Less so in the off season.

I wouldn’t say so but I know most Sens fans think so. Fiala would be the highest scoring player on Ottawa this year and while Pinto and the 1st rounder are great they aren’t guarantees, Fiala is a guarantee.

Fiala wants a big contract . I can’t see him returning 2 amazing pieces . One of them sure and something minor. But it won’t be Pinto

There's definitely an argument that Fiala would be a good way to spend one of those assets, but if you think he’s worth both you're trippin on the jenkem.

Well that’s part of what comes with having good players, you’re going to have to pay them good money. That shouldn’t affect his trade value.

Prospects and draft picks being magic beans, you'd expect some of them not to hit. Given the list of the players who have won U20 WJC best defenseman, though, the Leafs probably want to wait and see when it comes to Niemela.

The guys before him to win it were Sandin, Romanov, Dahlin, Chabot, Werenski, Gavrikov, Ristolainen, Trouba, Gormley, Ellis, Pietrangelo, Karlsson, Doughty.

I mean, not all of those guys are #1 studs, but holding on to two may be more valuable in the long-term instead of the proven player. If either one of Sandin or Niemela turn into even 75% of those guys, they'd have incredible value on their entry-level and second contracts.

I think on the fiala part you have to consider the allocation of assets and timing. If they think they’ll be ready to compete next season they will need someone like fiala to help corral the younger players and focus their drive to win. If pinto isn’t ready to start contributing to the club next season then he would be a good chip added to the deal. It’s really about timing for an up and coming club, how deep is their prospect pool and do they need someone who will be a 25-30 goal 70ish pt player or wait another 3 years for someone like pinto to be ready for that responsibility. I think there are arguments both ways. Maybe the 1st drops to a pair of 2nds or something, but I think it’s a building block.

First off, this isn't a negative comment about Fiala, just some Sens info to compare.

I'd expect Fiala to continue at his 0.8 PPG rate of the last 3 seasons. Batherson has a higher PPG than Fiala right now, at 1.10 PPG, and has demonstrated a consistent nature to his production. Stützle is expected, by most, to be a near point per game player. Fiala would probably be 3rd or 4th on the Sens moving forward at his current production levels, depending on Tkachuk. That's what the Sens need, definitely.

I think Pinto's value lies in several areas, not just production. He's a right hand shot, plays centre, and has demonstrated strong faceoff skills, which should only improve. He has good NHL size at 6;2" amd 195 lbs, and could still put on more muscle as he matures.

I'm not saying I would do this trade, but if it did happen, know that Ottawa is giving two very good assets for Fiala.

Boldy is at a point per game through his first 16 games in the NHL, when Niemela does that and shows his game can translate to the American League game let me know, until then I would suggest you think before you speak.

PS:

Muzzin is 33 years old, turning 34 in 42 minutes and isn’t half the defenseman Dumba is lol

I know, I wasn’t trying to undermine Pinto and the 2022 1st but what I’m saying is that Fiala’s volume of production is a lot higher than any of those guys. Fiala has scored at a .61ppg clip through 384 career games, Pinto has scored at a .47ppg clip through 17 games, Josh Norris has scored at a .64ppg clip through 95 games, Stutzle is scoring at a .54ppg clip through 101 games, and Tkachuk is scoring at a .65ppg clip through 244 games. So what I’m trying to say is that, yes all those Sens players are putting up great numbers so far through their respective careers but Fiala has put up similar if not higher numbers than them through 100+ more games than all of them. He’s consistent and Dorion would know exactly what he’d be getting in Fiala, whereas Pinto is a very promising player but he is still an unknown and the 2022 1st is a completely unknown player as of right now.

Ahhh right, so unproven. You wouldn’t because you think Bodly will continue to play and improve. Much like leafs fans think niemela will continue his path and become something better than Dumba, which at this point why would you think he couldn’t be?

Change Bodly for Rossi or Addison, unproven players, do you make that trade then? No you don’t. Why? Because you think your players will grow into something better than muzzin. Same reason Leafs fans don’t want to trade the WJC top dman
