6 years might be better in the end though.

Because if you go 8 years now, then 8 years when he’s a UFA, he’s making a lot of money until he’s 37.

If you go 6 years now, then 8 years when he’s a UFA, he’s making a lot of money until he’s 35.

Edit: So essentially a 6-year deal saves the Devils money 15 years from now in 2036-37 & 2037-38.

ACCORDING TO ELLIOTTE FRIEDMAN
San Jose is planning on facilitating a 3 way trade involving Kane.

This will be for cap purposes but the team acquiring Kane will likely see a AAV very low for Kane's caliber of play.
There would obviously be retention and Kane is expecting to play in the NHL this year.

The stars are aligning and are screaming its gonna be SJS -> ARI -> _________?

He hasn't warranted $8M but I think the Devils would give him a contract that he would grow into.
Kinda like in franchise mode. Signing players you know will be good to long term contract.
8x8 could easily turn into a steal for the Devils

If the one team is retaining 50%, my guess is it costs a 1st and a 2nd or 3 2nds. If they’re retaining 25%, my guess is a 2nd and a 3rd.

Probably the Sharks retain 50%, Team B retains 25%, and Team C gets Kane at $1.75 million per year for the next 2 and a half seasons. Or something like that.

True. But I rather get him at a higher AAV right now for more years, rather than pay him even more when he becomes a UFA

Is my prediction actually gonna come true lul

I was messing around and doing a trade where Toronto got Kane and sent back Ritchie. Only diff was I used Seattle as the middle man as I think Francis and Dubas made a deal for leaving McCann exposed where he will retain for a lower than expected pick. Anyways if it happens not bad

As despite all the bad media 1.75mill for a 20 goal scorer in Kane aint bad if you think about it. Just got to get his act together

I doubt that Hughes’ price would fluctuate much from age 27 to 29. He’d get a tonne of money thrown at him on the open market either way.

Kane has four seasons left.

SJS also are very unlikely to move their firsts (according to Sheng and Kurz)

I'd say we see:

SJS:
Kane
Kniazev
maybe even Chmelevski or another spec/ player
2nd
2nd

Arizona takes another 25%-50% and SJS takes an amount like 25-50%

Arizona gets both 2nds, Kniazev, Chmelevski

The third team basically pays nothing but get Kane alone for basically dirt cheap aav. They only gain Kane no incentive because like 2m x 4 is easily manageable. Arizona and SJS are doing all the work. Maybe like Kane and 4th but Arizona reaps the reward.

That deal doesn’t really make much sense for San Jose, unless they aren’t retaining much, if any salary.

I’d assume that the team acquiring Kane mostly pays for the retention. Maybe it’s something like:

Sharks give:
Kane (50% retained)
Sharks receive:
Nothing

Arizona gives:
Nothing
Arizona receives:
25% of Kane’s salary
2nd round pick
3rd round pick

Team C gives:
2nd round pick
3rd round pick
Team C receives:
Kane (at 25% salary)

hmmm lets see

Kane (50%) + 2022 2nd + Chmelevski ---> Arizona
Kane (50%) ---> Toronto
2023 3rd ----> Arizona
Ritchie ----> SJ

So in the end

Toronto: Kane (Double retained)
Arizona: Dermott + Chmelevski + 2022 2nd + 2023 3rd
SJ: Ritchie

Just as a reference point. Everyone gets something and everyone wins (does not have to be Toronto). Got a feeling SJ will take a cap dump in a 3-way but will they care nah as lets say its Ritchie (even with the Kane retention) still less than burying Kane.

A note on retention:

The Sharks can retain up to 50% of the contract (or $3.5 million).

The second team can retain up to 50% of what is left after San Jose’s retention. So:
If SJS retains 0%, team 2 can retain up to $3.5M.
If SJS retains 10%, team 2 can retain up to $3.15M.
If SJS retains 20%, team 2 can retain up to $2.8M.
If SJS retains 30%, team 2 can retain up to $2.45M.
If SJS retains 40%, team 2 can retain up to $2.1M.
If SJS retains 50%, team 2 can retain up to $1.75M.

Interesting, we could see another Hischier situation where the player seems to kind of cap off and is worth the contract kind of
