Fiala is a top line player, but a top line winger also isn't as good as most people think.
Perhaps it's just that the leafs really need a guy like Greenway that makes me appreciate him so much more (I say as a Leafs fan)
Fiala puts up similar numbers to guys like Boeser, Tkachuk, Svechnikov, Gaudreau, Nylander, Barzal, Couturier and Ehlers while playing with bottom six players. He's ahead of guys like Reinhart, Laine, Forsberg, Kuznetsov. All of those players play with their teams best forwards. If you gave Fiala similar linemates to those types, he'd be putting up top 20-25 numbers league wide. Probably point per game paces.
The reason Fiala and Kaprizov don't play together is because the Wild coaching staff wanted to spread the offense across lines, rather than have one super line and not much else. The fact that they're considered roughly equal offensive talents should tell you what you need to know.
Fiala is dangerously good at generating offense and very few people outside of Minnesota realize that because they look at the stat lines and see that he's "nothing special", rather than watching him play and understanding the context behind the numbers.
