Description
lots of rumors surrounding both of these players. Ideally Vancouver wants to keep them both, but what could/should they get if they decide to trade them? Neither of these players are "cap dumps" and both have desirable skillsets that appeal to multiple teams.
While Schmidt was acquired for a 3rd round pick, the timing and circumstances surrounding the Pietrangelo signing forced Vegas to move him for almost nothing. When you consider that Keith fetched a 3rd and a young D, Schmidt is worth at least a 2nd and may be a prospect as well.
Miller has blossomed in Vancouver and has substantial versatility and overall value. He is not being moved unless the return is worthwhile.

The thing is Schmidt has declined significantly since being moved to VAN. I'm not sure his value is positive anymore

For Miller I’d give you the Toronto first and a forward prospect like bemstrom. You paid a first and a small add for 3-4 years of jt. He’s played better but has less certainty to resign or play long term for us. A single first and a young nhl forward is the most I would pay.

This is kind of weird...You're saying that Schmidt has value because of the Keith trade, but you don't reference that in the OEL trade, and instead get their best forward attached, plus give them 3 negative assets.

I'm not saying that Arizona shouldn't retain in an OEL trade, but I can't imagine they'd be paying to move him.

Acquired for a 3rd, saw his production drop off a cliff and somehow he has more value now?

While you make decent points around VGK circumstances and what Keith fetched, you ignored some others. Namely flat cap, Schmidt value at an all time low with a hefty contract, Holland is an idiot and Canucks don’t have a ton of leverage given the trade request and confirmation from the team.

That’s not to say Schmidt isn’t a good player and could still be useful. I personally think his situation was probably one of the most impacted by Covid and the trade from Vegas and he’ll bounce back pretty strong. But it’s a huge risk from other teams and they’ll be buying low so you likely won’t get any high picks or high end prospects coming back.

Not to mention Peeke is the only RHD on the roster, depending on the Jones return. Also Miller doesn’t exactly fit into the rebuild. Idk why people aren’t getting that Columbus shouldn’t be trading picks out for older players.

Yeah the only reason I’d do what I offered is we have on outside shot at resigning him and he can play center. Hes not too old but would be a vet by the time we are competing again and wouldn’t be bad for the leadership group.

Arizona doesn't care about the cap, they are bleeding cash and they very much care about the money. OEL is owed 50M over 6 years with 10.5 M paid out EACH of the next three years, Keith is owed a total of 3.6 M over the next two years.....do you see the actual difference here? Keith is in a decline and has been for a couple of years ranking as one of the worst D in the league. Schmidt has not shown declining play....last year was a train wreck for Vancouver as a whole but he was still their best D man....easily. Arizona is bleeding cash, they want to move OEL very badly. This is not a hockey trade, its not a cap dump, its a cash dump.

Maybe, but I doubt it. I doubt they trade him if they don't get value, they just have no reason to. Other teams know exactly what Schmidt is and what a disaster the Canucks were on and off the ice last year. If they can squeeze them, obviously they will try, but his skill set is in too much demand for that to work IMO. Someone will make a respectable offer after the ED. I could be wrong.....but I don't see it happening in this case.

VAN is not moving Miller, Aquilani won't allow it and Benning is under a lot of pressure to make the playoffs.

Maybe...maybe not. If Miller wants out ( and who really knows ) they will move him. it's interesting that Montreal has inquired about him and that it was reported. This entire site is hypotheticals BTW.
