I would agrue that he would be a great addition. A left side of Hughes, Rielly, and Rathbone would be phenomenal.

Hoglander+ is a joke

You're looking at a 1st... maybe adding a spec if demand pushes the price up.

Our defense led the league in scoring. They need defensemen that aren't a ****show in their own end

Brother, Rielly isn't an addition for offensive purposes, solely. Our D may have led the league in scoring but its a tirefire. Adding a good defenceman is what VAN needs, Rielly is a good defenceman. Decent caphit for this coming season and who knows what kind of extension could be struck up

As a rental D, not too much. Still, more than this. Don't think VAN needs him though. In terms of value just keeping might be their best bet...they won't be able to land acceptable value in a trade, although that applies to most Leafs core players based on the overwhelming inability to success during the postseason.

I was thinking maybe goalie or something

Rangers would be an interesting choice as a deal could be made around Georgiev

Honestly only reason I would take rielly is if dead cap is going back the other way, which I doubt Toronto would be willing to do.

Don’t see a fit here for both teams

Hmm, I think people underestimate the value that Schmidt brings to the table. I would say the Schmidt/Juolevi package is equivalent to a 1st rounder and 5th rounder maybe? Schmidt=high 2nd, Juolevi=high 4th

I just don't see the point of moving Schmidt. Nor Juolevi honestly. VAN already has a low number of RDs as it is, Schmidt is quality there.

So Tyson Barrie with a year left only got a 1st? ... only a 1st for an elite top pairing puck moving defenceman is a joke of an offer. It doesn't help the Leafs at all.

I see this. I personally think that Schmidt is most valuable on a team ready to contend. Despite the hysteria right now in TOR, they are much closer to contending than VAN so I could actually see it being a fit. If VAN resign Hamonic, then target one more RD in UFA.

I'm currently working on a semi to fairly realistic post for the Leafs for the off-season and it involves moving Rielly to Vancouver as well actually. I think it it fits both teams great, but for Toronto the package coming back has to have JT Miller as the main piece as they're thin at centre and Miller can step into that role behind Matthews and Tavares nicely as well as play up and down the lineup when needed

Even if it's true a D for D swap wouldn't really help the Leafs. If anything they should trade Schmidt for futures, which they can't afford.

Also Toronto is a so-called pseudo-contender if you ask me. They've been hitting their heads on the same brick wall for half a decade right now and haven't been able achieve crap thus far.

You can't say "realistic" and "JT Miller as the main piece" in the same sentence haha I understand I am trying to zero in on Rielly's value in this thread but I know for certain that Miller's value is higher.

I agree a trade centered around Rielly for Miller makes a lot of sense for both sides... probably need Rielly to agree to an extension with the Canucks to make it happen though which will be very awkward for the leafs if it doesn't work out.

& how is Miller's value exactly higher? He's a 2nd line type of player that have slightly above average defence. He has only a year extra on his contract than Rielly and Miller is already reportedly unhappy in Vancouver.

Rielly is a top pairing defenceman on the majority of teams in the league that puts up a minimum of 50 points from the backend and creates a ton of offence by jumping into the rush. Despite the media coverage, his defence is about average maybe slightly below but he's torn apart for the highlight reel plays that guys like McDavid make on him (he makes those plays on everyone). Rielly's also a proven leader having been close to being named captain for the Leafs.

Top pairing defenceman are harder to find and are more valuable that 2nd line players. So it wouldn't be much more, but Vancouver would need to add in that type of deal.

I don't think an extension is necessary for the deal to happen. Barrie got traded to Toronto for Kadri with no extension and Toronto lost him to free agency. So the comparable doesn't have an extension I don't see why Rielly would. Vancouver would have a full year to talk extension with him so they'd have time to get it done
