Subtract to Build up
Zub for Boeser straight up is questionable. There's no way the Canucks would be adding anything, in fact they might want the Senators to add .

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Knuckl3s</b></div><div>What in the blazes is that Ottawa trade???</div></div>
As much as I hate trading Hoglander, this trade brings some much needed grit to the Canucks and moves Poolman out. Hoglander is not really a third or fourth line player and there has to be some incentive for Ottawa to take Poolman. Watson scored the same number of goals as Hoglander and only 2 points less in only 2 more games. There is no doubt that Hoglander is the better offensive player and is younger but I think Watson is more what the Canucks need. And it's only for 1 year.

Maybe Boeser, Garland, Pearson and our first for Matthews? No other Leaf is very interesting! So sayeth Kenan.

Some minds will be blown when no ext and no trade heading to the deadline…and they get a late 1st and B prospect as a rental</div></div>
Well, what is the 9th highest points scorer in the NHL worth (Miller 99 pts)? These are the salaries of the 5 forwards that finished just below him in points: Marner 97 pts - $10.90M, Panarin 96 pts - $11.64M, Connor 93 pts - $$7.14M, Rantanen 92 pts - $9.25M, Kane 92pts $10.50M. What is one of these players worth? Jack Eichel, who has never scored 90 pts, plus 2023 3rd round pick got a return of a top player, an "A" prospect and a 2022 1st and a 2023 2nd. I'm not saying that Miller should get that big a return but he should be worth a top 4 Dman or a top 6 forward plus a prospect and a 1st. Whether he is a rental or not depends on whatever team he may be traded to.

Canucks need a top 4 RHD more than they need Miller at this point.

Maye the deal isn't so much about Miller as it local boy Rathbone. He would probably be the Bruins #2 LHD ahead of Grzelcyk, Forbort et al.

I love Podkolzin's game but the political situation may make having Russian players untenable. I absolutely DO NOT blame the players for their home country's actions, but the NHL has severed relations with the KHL. Who knows what is next? Will the Canadian government sanction all Russian nationals? The trade was done purely to protect tthe team.

Taking advantage of the Leafs fire sale
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lambchopz</b></div><div>A hypothetical “fire sale” involves trading their top guns, not solid bottom 6 pieces for minor scraps</div></div>
Perhaps Kampf would be a better player to fill the Canucks' needs but I happen to like Engvall. As to the fire sale.......
The Leafs will be moving at least 2 of Marner, Nylander, Kerfoot, Kampf and Holl.
They should also try to move Tavares, Muzzin and Reilly but age and the NTCs and NMCs will make that difficult.
THE ONLY $11 MILLION PLAYER ON THAT TEAM IS MATTHEWS!

Why not? Are we afraid they'll mis out on another Dan Woodley, Jason Herter. Alex Stojanov, Libor Polasek, Nathan Smith, or Patrick White? Draft picks, even first rounders, are always a gamble. When taking established NHLers you know what you are getting. The Canucks would have to decide whether they would rather gamble or take a young (24) RHD WITH 185 NHL games and a RW who is competent, albeit some what overpaid. Perhaps there is another Patrik Stefan out there?

Is Forsberg going to be there next year? You don't want to part with Fabbro? I'd take Myers, Kondelik a first and a sixth instead, or perhaps Carrier, Kondelik, a first and a third.

which JT Miller package is best
Why the retention? If teams want Miller it is up to them to clear cap space or offer something incredibly good.
None of these deals are good enough for retention IMO. All of them would require either another prospect or pick.
Any 4 of those players might be good enough to retain salary.
The Canucks won't trade Miller to get rid of him. Cap space and his age would be the drivers behind a Miller trade.
