Did a similar thing yesterday with NHL 1Cs. I grouped clusters of top LHD in the NHL, based on how I personally view them. D are a little different to evaluate so I used a combination of personal opinion, importance to team success , usage, stats, skill set and wow factor. If I forgot someone doesn't mean they're not good- either a mistake or I don't view them in these groups
#1 Tier- Hedman and Josi have had success in the league for a while and I think that separates them from the rest of the group. Consistent Norris canidates, workhorses and essential for team success. Slavvin was very close, maybe another stellar year, cup run or Norris finalist for me. Younger guys will get there, please don't fret me about Hughes, Hieskenan, Werenski
#2 Tier- all fairly young guys who carry the team on their backs. Will be in Norris conversation for rest of their careers, and will win. Not at Hedman or Josi level yet. Dahlin was almost placed here, but he's only 20 and still has some parts of his game to work out with Kruger.
#3 Tier- Elite D to me, who with a good season can win a Norris and are essential to team success. Based on skill, but also team usage and lack of help around them. Sergachev will get there, but was fairly sheltered with his role in TBL this year. Same with Lindell- surrounded by Miro and Klingberg will never be the top dog.
#4 tier- All very good and major parts of team D-core. Not Norris candiates, but very well respected in league because of their skill.
#5 tier- Since D have a longer develop path I think these guys will shoot up the tiers as they grow. Probably won't reach Josi/Hedman level but will be major component of a succesful d-core. I know Toews in 26, but he just played his first full NHL season

agreed. He fits better with that group. Was worried people would get mad for putting him in tier 1 because of his "advanced stats" and defensive play lol
Hughes and Krug in Norris consideration? If Carlson puts up that many points, I feel comfortable saying Hughes will never win one.
I can agree with your Krug point- maybe move him down a tier. Hughes made the game look easy and was a play driver at 21, and I assume he'll just keep getting better. We'll see more after this year. Carlson's a great player and still has a good window to win- came 2nd for Norris last year, and top 5 the previous two. Driving offense isn't the hallmark of his game; he only put up over 50 points once before age 27, and has benefitted from playing with a very strong offensive team.
Last 2 years point leaders
Carlson
149gp 28g 117a 145 points
next in line
burns 128
josi 121
hedman 109
yandle 107
to be clear he's scored 17 more point than the closest Dman. His defensive game isnt great but people on this site like to glorify how bad it actually is. he's top 25 point producer the last 2 seasons....
"Hedman and Josi have had success in the league for a while and I think that separates them from the rest of the group. Consistent Norris candidates, workhorses and essential for team success. " now i do agree that they are important and are the 2 best in the league but Carlson is 2nd in points for the capitals and a huge reason the recently won a cup.. "team success"
long story short lets put some respect on Carlson's name

This list is only LHD, so of course Carlson isn’t on here.

Carlson didn't win because he's all offense. The game has way more elite defensemen when it comes to the combination of defense and offense.
Heiskanen, McAvoy, Fox, Dahlin, Ekblad, and Chabot will all win Norrises before Hughes and Makar because they are better defensively and as long as they put up over 50 points they will likely get it over those guys even if they put up 70 points. Although before Giordano and Josi won I almost lost all my faith in the Norris and would believe Hughes and Makar would win it before the guys I previously mentioned since for awhile the awards meaning was solely based on offense while EK, Subban, Burns were winning it with the deserving Hedman or Doughty finally winning it even though they both should have won 2+ times.
