Ovechkin Pipe Dream

Description
Obviously it may not be the best idea to give someone who's in his mid 30s a long term contract, but I believe Ovechkin has the talent to continue scoring at an elite level for another decade. He rarely gets injured despite playing such a physical style.

But Mitch needs to agree to terminate the contract. You can’t just terminate without a player’s permission, unless they broke a law or a team rule (like not showing up to training camp, or not reporting to the AHL).

Yeah won’t happen but I think he should agree to it. After 2021/21, he’s only making 8 Million in total salary a year. If he signs a new deal, the signing bonus will push him over 10 Million, plus he gets to go to free agency quicker.

Isn’t a contract termination free? The Yotes can send him through unconditional waivers and it won’t cost them a penny.

You can't just terminate a players contract without their consent, Why would Marner agree to a contract termination agreement with Arizona and then resign back with Toronto for much cheaper? Pretty sure that's cap circumvention which is illegal.

That’s fair, the goaltending is definitely a weakness, but given how strong the forwards & defencemen are, it may not matter.

Ovie's next contract will be for 4 years. Take it to the bank. He'll retire after passing Gretzky's goal total and leave the Caps, along with his 2 career centermen, Backstrom and Kuznetzov, all 3 hitting UFA at the same time in 2025.

I heard Ovi wants a 12x7 contract on his next deal so gave it to him. I understand that as he ages he may become more one dimensional, but his shot is not going to disappear. I think he has what it takes to score 50 for another decade.

Ovechkin has never stated that he wants a 12x7 deal, First off he's stated numerous times that he wants to finish his career up in the KHL close to home. Rumor was either 12x3 or 12x4 was what he was seeking. Toronto is in no position to offer Ovechkin 7 years $84 million we're in a flat cap world for the foreseeable future get used to it.

That may not be technically illegal now, but the NHL would absolutely make it retroactively illegal like they did with the front-loaded contracts when they implemented the cap recapture penalty. There’s no chance this would go un-punished.

Matthews is not gonna get enough touches if Ovechkin is on his line. I think the best linemate beside Matthews and Marner is someone who’s physical down in the boards and in front of the net. The Palat to Point and Kucherov sort of. I think Tom Wilson would be dope on their line

Though unrealistic, do you guys think this team is a contender?

Goalie situation is bad. And only acouple Defensive D in front of them. And Toronto not a great Defensive system. They play fast, and good stick-handling, and cutesy. Brodie and Liljegren are more of Offensive D. And Sandin isn’t the greatest Defensively yet either. Atleast we don’t really know yet.

And very unrealistic. Ovi already said, he’s playing his last couple years in Russia. He might sign a 2-3 year extension and then go play in Russia.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I agree the goaltending is bad, though I think the D is good enough to protect them. Theodore, Muzzin & Brodie all have pretty good defensive results, Sandin is expected to develop into a top two way D as well. Plus all of the forwards in the bottom 6 play a solid defensive game.

Thanks for the feedback. I put Ovie on a line with Marner & Tavares. He has the physicality and heaviness to forecheck & retrieve pucks for them, as well as finish off their passes.

Yes but the forwards & defence corps are terrific, so I think they’ll be able to bail out the horrific goaltending.

Where on earth did you hear that? He’s not playing for 7 years, in a recent interview it seemed like the max. he would stay in the NHL is 5 more years. And again, he’s said he would never sign anywhere other than Washington.

I think he plays till he beats Gretz in goals and skates of the ice no matter which period or game and hangs up those skates for good.

I don’t think Ovechkin cares about beating the record nearly as much as everyone else does. I think he’ll play until he feels like going back to Russia, and beating the goals record would just be a bonus if he did it.
