So if Capfriendly can figure this out, why won't the NHL create a cap that is NET of taxes? It's insane, on $1M, a Nashville player keep $622k and a Montreal player keeps $485k. That's nearly 14% difference. How are any Canadian teams ever supposed to compete for top talent in its prime? If you're talking about Taylor Hall and roughly $10M/year, that's $900k per season that he leaves on the table by coming to Canada. That's a heckuva disincentive.
Given that the majority of the NHL audience is still in Canada and a Canadian team hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 1993, it might be time for Bettman and Daly to take a serious look at this.
