How does Carolina get a better return for Pesce than Ottawa got for Karlsson?

Absolutely a better return for Karlsson. I cannot see why Carolina would even consider this deal. It is basically Kapanen, good player but nowhere near the level of Pesce and then scraps.

AND that was for a rental.

This is an EASY no from Carolina. Pesce is one of the best 2 way D in hockey. He's also on a steal of a contract for a LONG time. Carolina also wouldn't have a long term secure RHD without him. It has to be Nylander if you want him

It would be hard to consider a player drafted three years ago that has only managed to play 11 Nhl games for a team starving for quality right shot dmen a top 4D prospect anymore. Likewise a late second and 2 third round picks have under a 20% hit rate of those picks even being in the nhl. So if 1 of those 3 even becomes an nhl regular then they are doing better than the odds would predict. So yes Kapanen has value but the rest is just quantity over quality

Kings say no. The Kings like Lizotte. The only reason they would trade him is because they don't have enough protection slots to protect him and would be afraid to lose him in the expansion draft to Seattle next summer. Trading him for Kerfoot doesn't solve that issue.

The Kings could very possibly trade Lizotte to the Leafs, but it would cost expansion draft exempt B/B+ prospect and a mid-round draft pick.

They can trade draft picks if they don't want to use them but every team wants picks, they still carry plenty of value.

Picks would probably be flipped for either a rental or to a rebuilding team that has someone the Canes want. While Toronto hasn't had the best right shot dmen, they've had NHLers who they haven't been able to cut due to their contracts and they traded for Barrie this year which obviously didn't go as planned but Lily isn't knocking him out of a spot. They had to put up with 1 year of Ceci to get out of that Zaitsev contract and gave Lily another year to develop, hes gonna be a beast

I wouldn't say they're in win now, they are certainly a good team competing for the cup but they don't have their window closing anytime soon. Svech is young, Ahos young, Necas is young, a win-now team would be more like the Penguins where they don't have time to wait for prospects but Liljegren could be in a top 4 role as soon as this year and definitely by next year
