Description
MTL needs to make the moves to get younger and pick up higher picks. I realize not all of this would ever happen in one off-season. This is merely various ideas of moves that I think would improve the team in a re-build.

These moves would give KK and Poehling time to play in the AHL this coming season, with potentially moving back up at the deadline if we could flip Bozak or Nash back out at 50% retained salaries. This also makes us significantly younger on the back end and gives our guys ice time to develop. I love Petry and Tatar both but the reality is in a salary cap world, it is only worth re-signing them at 2/3 year deals and at their current money or even a little less. Neither should or would do that. NSH & COL will be happy with their investments. In the meantime, i tried to find teams that could use to salary dump for us to move up some spots in the draft.

MTL
  1. Blais, Samuel
  2. Bozak, Tyler
  3. Choix de 1e ronde en 2020 (STL)
Détails additionnels:
This frees up money to help Stl re-sign Pietrangelo and Dunn as well as the pay increases for Scandella, Schenn and MacEachern.

Thoughts were Bozak and a 1st for a 5th (similar to the Marleau deal last year). Then Blais and a 5th for a 2nd.

Blais would be a nice fit with size in the top 9.

MTL
  1. Santini, Steven
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2020 (NSH)
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2020 (NJD)
Détails additionnels:
NSH are all in and it showed this year they need another top 4. This gives Fabbro a year of being a bottom pair d-man, which will help both his development and NSH as a whole.

My thoughts on the deal were this: Petry for a 1st and 5th. Upgrade to a 4th when MTL takes on Santini salary. Upgrade to a 3rd with retaining Petry salary, upgrade to 2nd with Weal and finally the early 2nd by including the 4th rd.
NSH
  1. Petry, Jeff (2 750 000 $ retained)
  2. Weal, Jordan (700 000 $ retained)
  3. Choix de 4e ronde en 2020 (WPG)
3.
MTL
  1. Myers, Philippe [Droits de RFA]
  2. Choix de 2e ronde en 2020 (PHI)
Détails additionnels:
Philly tight on cap space could use Demchenko at 1.2mil less than re-signing Elliot and Demchenko probably the best rate/talent guy under the circumstances.

Thoughts were Myers for Demchenko and 5th. The 2nd for the 3rd, 4th and 7th were more a draft move on boths account.
PHI

COL
  1. Tatar, Tomas (2 400 000 $ retained)
  2. Choix de 5e ronde en 2021 (OTT)
5.
MTL
  1. Nash, Riley
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2020 (CBJ)
Détails additionnels:
Nash only played 12 minutes a game this year. This frees up some money to help re-sign Dubois and a couple of other RFA's. It's only falling back a few spots and to pick up additional picks, when they are already short some 2nd's and a 3rd.

Mtl picks up some grit on the wing and could potentially move him at the deadline at half price and pick up a 3rd rounder.

Columbus needs centers.. Nash is the 4th line center and at 2.75 for 1 more year isn’t bad. That’s also about 10 spots for a team who hasn’t had a 1st in 3 of the last 5 drafts....

Also all of theses trades heavily favor MTL....

You would really do Tatar with that much retention for just a 1st?!

hopefully Grigorenko works out. If he can be ur 2nd/3c easily especially with how well he played in the khl. give him some solid wings and u will be amazed by his skill

Why the hell would Philly trade a young top 4D and a 2nd for a goalie that's never played in the NHL and some mid and late round picks?

Also in what world are they tight on cap space?

That's horrendous, and as above, concur fully. This deal works is more balanced if PHI withdraw their 2nd and MTL add their 1st.

These moves are way too lopsided in MTL's favor.

Try again.

I wouldn't trade tatar for a low 1st rd pick even without retention (if I was mtl)

These trades are everywhere. MTL wins some but loses others.

St Louis, Philly and Columbus say no.
Nashville's is proper value but dont think they are the team to make that trade.
Colorado takes Tatar at that retention and runs, not everyday you get handed a player on pace for 70 points for a late 1st.

Philly withdraw thier 2nd and MTL put in a 1st? Buddy Myers is not worth a top 10 pick. The trade is horribly lop sided, thats a given but no way you get close to a top 10 pick value for Myers right now.

Myself, I would pass. If I'm keeping half of Tatar's salary, I want something slightly better than a late first rounder

Yeah Tatar isn't being moved for a 29th OA pick, with retention and giving back a 5th just makes the offer even more laughable on top of it.
With this 50% retention it's at least Kaut, Ranta and a 1st (Either this year because it's a nice class or next year hoping you get a better pick).

On other moves; we're not moving a freshly signed free agent with good potential, Montreal can't attract UFAs you imagine what's next if they start trading them a week/month after signing?
"Thoughts were Bozak and a 1st for a 5th (similar to the Marleau deal last year). Then Blais and a 5th for a 2nd." Blais' a nice third liner with a nice potential but is he really worth a 2nd? I'd rather just get the dump with 1st and stop it there.
I don't see that CBJ trade happening as Savard, Dubinsky or Murray could also be sent out of town and some carry more value than Nash.

Nice write up doe.

They have roughly 11 mil for next year to re-sign a second goalie, N. Patrick, Linblom, Aube-Kubel, three depth fwds (Thompson, Pitlick and Grant), Hagg and Myers. Myers, Hagg and Patrick are going to take up a large chunk of that 11 million. Plus the following year they have to re-sign Hart, Sanheim, Morin and Laughton, so they aren't going to want to tie up all of that 11 million they have to spare beyond next year.

That is very wrong, of those players Hagg is the only one with arbitration rights, Patrick hasn't shown any reason to get a big raise and Lindblom is out for a while with cancer they will have about 5M extra in cap space
