I really dislike the Kampf/RyJo swap. You basically replace problem with a longer one. Kampf may be better suited for his role, but $2.4M is too much to pay for a 4C.
One of the perks of the RyJo gamble was that he only had one extra year of term. After next season, you need cap space for Rantanen’s mega-extension and whatever happens with Byram. You can get a 4C for $1-1.5M cheaper, which gives you more breathing room to keep your core under contract.

Byram and 2 top 64 picks for a rental that doesn’t solve the 2C issue and a bottom pairing defenseman. Doesn’t make sense for Colorado.
Guentzel is great, but this is a poor fit.

Avs trade their third best defenseman and a mediocre prospect for a backup goalie and a 2nd.
Help me understand this?

He’s a Russian who only signed in Colorado because they’d burn a year of his ELC. His dad is also a high up Russian hockey guy. He’s done very well in the KHL. Trading him before he plays one game in the NHL (expected this season) would be a bad move that would hurt our chances to ever sign another KHL guy

Trade Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Joblow</b></div><div>There no such thing at a team must have a 4th line center under 1millions. You just need depth at this position. That the one thing that all the cup champion have. Center depth. Evans</div></div>
Going based on the capfriendly depth charts. Top 5 teams in the league based on points:
1. Vancouver - Aman $884K
2. Boston - Poitras $870K
3. Colorado - Olofsson $775K
4. Florida - Stenlund $1M
5. Dallas - Faksa $3.25M (Steel is listed as 3C at $850K, and Duchene is a $3M 2C. Maybe just an anomaly).
Plenty of budget 4Cs in the NHL. If you’re tight on cap, you shouldn’t spend it on someone who will be a 4th liner.

Yup! That was a contract signed before the flat cap. We also had MacKinnon making $6.3M and a point per game Nazem Kadri making $4.5M. Unless you have superstars offsetting pricy contracts, it’s a no.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Joblow</b></div><div>What are you talking about? Evans contract is just fine. He is such versatile players, would care less if he would make 2,5 millions instead of is 1,7 cap hit. There other thing that is valuable then points. Evans is mostly use for defensive purposes and does extremely well. Faceoff, pk, nevragic moment. Evans values like i said is superior for Mtl at the moment</div></div>
Alright!
My thought is that he’s generally a 4C. Certainly a valuable role. But most good teams are not going to pay $1.7M for a 4th liner. You’re better off spending on higher impact players at the top of the lineup and then spending <$1M for everyone on your 4th line.
It’s a luxury that most teams cannot afford. Montreal has cap space and is bad, so it’s less of a concern.

Agreed. Can’t fit the Allen contract on the books next year unless they retain 50% or you sacrifice elsewhere on your roster. Even then, it wouldn’t be easy.

Trade Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Joblow</b></div><div>We already had this discussion. Get over yourself. Evans will only be move if the return is irresistible and this is not. He is more valuable to Mtl than a late second round pick. This is really not hard to understand. Mtl have already a millions pick over the next 3 season and a boat load of prospect doing well in Laval. There absolutely no incentive of trading Evans for a 60thish overall pick. Maybe next year when Evans is UFA the narrative will change but there no reason for Hugues to entertain the idea of trading Evans unless the return is irresistible like is said before.</div></div>
Why so worked up? Shouldn’t today be a happy day with the Monahan trade?
If someone is offering to dump a pretty lackluster contract for a solid return, I would absolutely consider it. Call up some youngsters or try to get additional assets to take on a cap dump. Maybe go shopping on waivers. Lots of options for a team that’s not trying to win today!
All of this is moot anyways because I can’t imagine this offer being on the table for Evans.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CSStrowbridge</b></div><div>In a vacuum, this is a fair deal. A 1st and a 3rd for the second best forward available (after Lindholm) would be good during most trade deadlines. However, Montreal was paid a 1st to take him and then signed him to a reasonable contract and then traded him away for another first and a third. Yeah, they WIN the overall transaction, even though Winnipeg are not the losers here. Calgary is certainly the loser here.</div></div>
I mean, they were paid to take him because he had an awful contract. Now Monahan is on a more reasonable contract signed as an UFA, so I feel like the firsts are not related.
Treliving’s splashy summer certainly looks awful in hindsight. How was he unemployed for like, a week?
