If Georgiev blows it
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>Georgiev clearly isn't. The UFA market is paper thin this season and even if there was a good option, you guys don't have the cap space to go hunting. This years headliners are Talbot, Nedeljkovic, and Samsonov.
Gibson, Markstrom, and maybe Ullmark are available on the market, but neither Boston or Calgary are likely interested in taking Georgiev the other way. Boston can't retain any salary and Calgary notoriously won't retain salary if there's term remaining.
And you guys aren't the only ones looking. New Jersey, Buffalo, Ottawa, Los Angeles, Toronto are all going to be trying to figure out their goaltending this off season.
Maybe you can convince someone to give you back one of your old goalies on the cheap in Grubauer or Kuemper since they've apparently lost their starting spots in their new homes.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>You don't exactly have any other assets outside of 1st round picks to use, and again, that's why a second is coming back your way. Goalie market is going to be unpalatable expensive this off-season, you best come to grips with paying a price you're not going to want to stomach, or somehow pray you guys don't have to send Georgiev to the glue factory next season.</div></div>
Replying to both comments at once.
Probably all 3 of those headline guys come in less than $5M. But this is all part of the problem: lay people (and NHL teams lol) don’t really know how to evaluate goalies. Kuemper and Grub were both solid in Colorado. They both left for $5M+ contracts and now lost their starting jobs. Same thing happened with Jack Campbell and countless other goalies.
It’s easy to freak out about Georgiev after that trash showing. But it’d also be bad to spend a bunch of money on netminders and still not have a true #1. That’s the bet the Avs took. It looked fine last year, it looked awful last night.

If Georgiev blows it
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>I watched last night's replays as well, 6/7 goals were glove side high. Winnipeg's scouting report on him clearly drilled down on that weakness. Not saying all of them were his fault, but the poor guy looks completely cooked out there.
For as bad as Gibsons stats have been the last few years, I believe he would have fared a lot better in that game, he's much more active/aggressive with his stick to prevent cross crease passes (Georgiev got burner 2 or 3 times by this) and he usually gets the first save buying his defense time to bail him out (Anaheims just hasn't) which isn't what Georgiev was able to do last night. Yeah, the defense was sloppy, but he needs to be making that first save and he just isn't.
With regards to the trade, you guys don't have much in the way of assets to work with, and a 2nd round pick is coming back. If Ritchie is off limits then you're talking about 1sts, and I don't think any team who has a goalie is going to be interested in waiting three seasons for that pick to come through. Behrens and Gulyayev are of no interest to us, and other prospects like Olausson etc just don't look like they're going to do anything at the NHL level.
Plus, you guys aren't the only ones in the market, NJ, Buffalo, maybe Ottawa, LA are all looking for goalies this off-season.</div></div>
Saying Gibson would have been better than Georgiev last night isn’t saying much.
I wouldn’t be paying premium assets to pay John Gibson $5M for the next 3 seasons.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>Cap dump you would have to pay for, he's a cap casualty, you're getting paid, just not market rate.
Unless I'm missing something, you don't have a 3RD next season unless you are able to resign Walker, which is a stretch as well if Landeskog is back. Why would Helleson not be able to make the Avs as a 6-7 RHD on an ELC?</div></div>
Replied to the first part above.
For Helleson, I don’t see the fit. Avs have preferred to put vets who are able to play special teams on their bottom pairing. If Helleson had already established himself in the NHL, fit would be closer. But in that case, you probably wouldn’t be trying to trade him.
If they wanted to go with unproven youth, I would think Malinski would be higher up on the depth chart and has been a good system fit for the Avs during his call ups (23 games this season).
More creative than most ACGMs here, but I don’t quite see him working. Helleson could probably be a good change of scenery candidate in a year (becomes waiver eligible in 25-26), but I’d imagine you’d have to add considerably in a Colton trade.

Call it a cap casualty, but the return is comparable to a cap dump. Semantics here, but my point is that I think Colton would probably get more value on market than Helleson if the Avs chose to trade him.
Nevertheless, I’d focus more on the Helleson fit. I don’t see it.

If Helleson can’t make the Duck’s roster, why would he have an easier time in Colorado? Not sure I’m following the logic of that trade.
Also, not sure I agree with Colton as a cap dump.

Next season playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JeffW</b></div><div>Really, are you assuming that landeskog retires we trade Girard? Because a new #1 goalie is going to cost, then you have mackinnon mittelstadt colton and frost down the middle</div></div>
I’m mostly talking from a value POV. I have no idea what Mittelstadt will cost. That’s gonna be interesting.
I assume you’d probably end up getting a lower end goalie to tandem with Justus. That would be risky. Then you have Frost at $2.1M to play 3rd line minutes with Colton. Mittelstadt drives a 2nd. Could be enough upside to compensate for the uncertainty in net. Math probably comes just shy of working out though unless you make some other moves.

Is that directed at me?
Colorado has a top 4 that’s absolutely locked (Makar/Toews/Girard/Manson). At best, Struble fights for bottom pair minutes.
Right now the Avs have Walker-Johnson as a bottom pair. They’ve historically had a vet like Johnson on the bottom pairing. Tbd what they do with Walker’s role. At best, that’s what Struble is fighting for.
Struble has 22 games before he needs to pass through waivers. So Colorado is basically giving up their recently acquired 2C in hopes that Struble can stick on the bottom pairing. That is dumb.
At that point, I’d rather just sign league minimum depth or shop someone else’s waiver D.

Why would Colorado do this?
Dvorak is injured, expensive, and bad. Struble would be battling for 7D.
So basically Roy and a 2nd for the Avs 2C? The guy the Avs just traded Byram for?
How does this help Colorado win the cup?

Drake Batherson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AnonymousSensFan</b></div><div>24 years old, no NHL games yet (even though he was signed by Colorado in the summer). His goal production has dipped quite a bit from last season, and on a mid KHL team (based on standings, I don't actually follow KHL), so if he's good, he'd likely be getting a lot of playing time.
Sorry if that doesn't scream elite prospect to me.
If you're argument is that he ain't a bust cause he was a 6th round pick, sure, whatever. A draft pick is a draft pick in my book, but whatever.
Either way, he ain't worth Drake</div></div>
I’m not sure what Batherson’s value is. I’m not going to weigh in on something I don’t know about. Perhaps something you should try out.
Kovalenko has been under contract with his KHL team. That’s why he hasn’t played an NHL game yet. He was so good last season in the KHL that the Avs signed him a season early to burn a year off his ELC. He flew over like a week ago to start his NHL career.
He is the best player on his team in the KHL (coached by Igor Larionov) and plays a very North American game: heavy, physical, forechecking. Way different than like the Gusevs and the Shipachov’s of the world.
Is Kovalenko going to be the next Kaprisov? No, absolutely not. But your comment kinda shows your ass a little bit here. You have no idea what you’re talking about on this one.

Even with that aside: DeAngelo is only useful if you can shelter him and let him produce with easy minutes/PP time. I’d rather give those minutes to Makar/Toews/Girard/Byram. Hell, even Malinski has a case!
If anything, the Avs would be looking for someone exactly the opposite of DeAngelo: defensively responsible, can play PK, probably doesn’t put up much offensive production, physical.

Avs give up assets for an expensive goalie in the AHL and a bad defenseman who notoriously got bought out after allegedly getting punched by Georgiev.
Deangelo in Colorado is probably the worst fit in the league. Interpersonal issues aside, he’d be like, the 5th best PP QB in Colorado.

Mrazek trade might be ok until you see he has 2 more years at $4.25M.
