Panarinbread man comes back makes Black hawks great again
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NucksFanForLife</b></div><div>Now that depends on where Chicago picks this draft. Saad, Toews, Panarin, Debrincat, Hughes/Kakko, Kane, Kahun, Anisimov, Perlini, Highmore, Strome, and Kampf is deep enough offensively. Keith, Gustafsson, Forsling, Murphy, Mitchell, Jokiharju, and Seabrook is average for a D unit, and say, Delia and Crawford/Lehner is enough goaltending to get a wild card spot. That offence looks potent to me.</div></div>
You forgot Boqvist who is coming up next season.
Keith - Jokiharju
Gus - Boqvist
Dahlstrom/Forsling - Murphy
That's a pretty decent Defensive lineup....not top 10 but certainly top 25 and with that offense you certainly could say this team will control possession in the offensive zone enough to shelter defensive shortcomings. It's not a cup team but it's a playoff team for sure.

How is he unproven?? Has played over 40 games this season and has 23 points... which would rank about 5th on the Canes atm. Goldobin < Kuok

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NucksFanForLife</b></div><div>Yeah I tend to agree. Though they are kinda a bubble team until they can get done second and third line scoring. Honestly, Mascherin, Robertson, L’esperance, Dellandra, and Gurianov should eventually give them the boost that they need. A Duchene or Hayes signing would be nice too. Not a rebuild though. For Colorado, why not wait and see if your Ottawa pick is in the top three? If not, trade it off for something that you need. A fourth or fifth overall pick could get you a ton of help.</div></div>
Yeah and Faksa puts up okay numbers, if he had a couple decent wingers he could probably be a solid 2nd line center. They seem like they're only a piece or two from being a really good team.

He is a frustrating individual
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NucksFanForLife</b></div><div>It's 3 and 8, but people beat up Gardiner as if it's his job to be a defensive defenseman. That's just not who he is. He's slightly below average defensively and way above average offensively. Karlsson struggles defensively at times. So does Ristolainen. And Klingberg. And Krug. You get the point. Nobody is super upset with them because they aren't on the Leafs. Hainsey, on the other hand, is only an average third pairing guy. He needs to go or be replaced. People say Hainsey and Gardiner are giveaway machines. Yet Reilly gives away more pucks then they do. He also allows far more GA/60 than any other D except for Dermott, the other most highly touted Leaf D. Basically, I think fans degrade Gardiner too much without realizing that Reilly is playing in his role now and he's being used in a way that he's never been used in before. He'd be a beast on a team like Vancouver and Montreal who have an abundance of D to grind out the hard minutes for him.</div></div>
Montreal and Vancouver can have him. Gardner give away always end in goals. Riely is playing top minutes against teams top line. Yet it’s Gardner mistakes that are noticed we can’t all be wrong.

Thanks. Yeah. I like the comparison, but give Niskanen to Tampa and forget about repeating. Tampa wins back to back.
I think Zucker also can play a bigger variety of roles than Miller, but at the moment they're each doing the same thing, about equally well, so I should probably curb my enthusiasm a bit.
Do you think this is enough of an overpay to upgrade from Pateryn to Brodin?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NucksFanForLife</b></div><div>I agree. Though I wonder what your thoughts on Matthews even strength defensive struggles are. He’s been almost as bad as Gardiner.</div></div>
Wasn't really the point of the post, was just to garner a discussion on if they should trade him or keep as an "own rental". But I do agree, Matthews indeed has defensive struggles himself, and when the goals dry up that fact always seems to get amplified. Although every player has defensive responsibilities and would be nice if Matthews was better defensively, his role on this team is not to keep the puck out of the net, but rather to drive the play to the other end of the ice where he doesn't need to worry about defense, while Gardner as a D Man, is always involved in the defensive side of the play, and when you make blunders they unfortunately really stand out.

This trade could only happen after the cards fell and Colorado knew where they'd be picking. If the Avs get 1st overall, they're not moving it. If they get the 4-8 range, they might consider as they're getting close to being a true contender and with Makar on the way they'll only get better. Mackinnon is playing out of this world but he needs help now, a draft pick doesn't help him win next year.

LA looks awful, Chicago and Detroit aren't getting better anytime soon especially since their top guys are all performing as well as can be expected, and St. Louis looks to be selling and should sink even more. New Jersey and Philly should rebound with Hall and Hart. Unfortunately, when you're in the bottom five you still have a 50-75% chance of picking in the top three.</div></div>

Getting philosophical on contracts - read description or dont post
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>I don't get how you can be so certain when you just saw what played out with Nylander.
Yes. The leafs would be wise to use your comparables in contract negotiations. I am highly doubtful your 'put my foot down' mentality will get either player to sign for the number you want.
IMO....If Matthews signs for $11.5 and Marner for $8m...it won't be because the M&M camps gave in and accepted those comparables...it will be because Dubas appealed to their sense of building a winner (aka. begged them)</div></div>
You are right, I can't be certain. I do believe though that most of the high end salary discussion comes from the media and fans of other teams who want to see the Leafs fail more than their own team succeed. There are people on here who think Matthews will absolutely get 14 million and Marner 12 million. That is just insane. How can teams possibly handle that sort of inflation?
Perhaps the middle class of NHL players will disappear and you'll either be a star making star money, or you'll be a depth guy making 3 million a year tops.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NucksFanForLife</b></div><div>I agree, but it's never happened in the NHL. Not at a 25% discount anyways. Guys will take less, but Matthews won't take less than Toews and Marner won't take less than Stone. Yes I think that they will take a discount, and probably even up to 2 million off what they could make. Marner and Matthews could have a legit shot at the cup in Colorado (though I don't think that anyone will offer sheet them) and make 3-4 million more. They know that whatever team they're on will do well, so I guess it's a question of money versus winning. In which case most choose money and a semi-contender, but some do choose winning. Being dogmatic about a maximum isn't right, but we can definitely set a basement. 9 and 11.5 million is a basement IMO.</div></div>
I personally agree that those are absolute basement numbers too and anyone that believes otherwise is being overly optimistic. It's still not impossible for them to sign for lower tho.

I'm not challenging you on your opinion that they deserve higher contracts. Is it not possible that...if when Tarasenko and Gaudreau signed...the Blues/Flames had star-studded rosters and considered to be a cup contender...would either guy be willing to accept a bit lower to help the team either add (or prevent from losing) key pieces?
Again...probable? Maybe not. Possible?....

Getting philosophical on contracts - read description or dont post
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>I keep saying this every time I see it:
Players don't HAVE to sign offer sheets. He can decline their offer and continue to negotiate with TO. They can still negotiate a 12M contract that ticks all the other boxes for Matthews after being offered an offer sheet.</div></div>
This is and isn't part of my point that I'm making. I've argued the exact same thing that a player receiving and offer sheet and him actually signing it are very different beasts...depends entirely on what the priorities of the player are...something we have no idea about. Entirely possible..maybe even likely...that Matthews has 0 interest in playing for Arizona...but signing a $15m offer sheet with them isn't impossible
The purpose of the thread and my description is that an argument can be made for high and low figures.

As both a Red Wings and Lightning fan, I would truly love to see Trouba in Tampa that would be scary good with Hedman. But after giving McDonagh the new long term deal. Not sure if Tampa can afford Trouba Point is already going to command a huge contract probably at least $7.5M over 7 or 8 years if not more. Not sure how Trouba would fit into Tampa's scenario but would love to see it happen.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NucksFanForLife</b></div><div>Then why give up a B prospect and a fifth to get a guy who doesn't crack the roster? It'd be a better idea to get Chicago to half retain Kruger and get Johansson back from NJ for that package except with a higher pick.</div></div>
Would NJ do that? I think, barring a huge offer, they'd re-sign MoJo? I mean, he's a fifty point utility forward.
And while Dowd has 50% more even strength points than Boyle this year, Boyle adds experience on both special teams, while Marcus Johansson only plays pp. I'm intrigued by Boyle's on ice shooting percentage. He's a very good screen. If a ref swallows a whistle, his slow skating could become less of a liability in a slow series dominated by clutching and grabbing.
Penalty killing is exhausting. You can do better with four good units than one great one. Boyle and Dowd each play second unit now. Moving either to a third PK unit makes the overall team rate better. It's less exciting than finding a trade that works for Coleman and Lovejoy, off NJ's top unit, but that would take an overpayment, and it's still a gamble because Andy Greene drives that bus.

Canes fans - realistic expectations of Aho TT ext
Fair enough- the point is people can’t expect 8 years at 7M AAV which is what I’ve seen in some cases. Maxing out the years does funny things to the contracts. My point was trying to demonstrate there is a way to look at a players market and expecting less than market value (especially in a place like Carolina) is not very likely.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NucksFanForLife</b></div><div>They do, but we've recently seen a trend where players are taking less than what they could be making. Scheifele at .86 PPG took 8.4% of the cap ceiling. Pastrnak at .93 PPG took 8.9% of the cap. Gaudreau at .99 PPG took 9.2% of the cap. Draisaitl at .94 PPG took 11.3% of the cap. Eichel at .96 PPG took 12.6% of the cap. Barkov at .89 PPG took 8.1% of the cap. Those are in the final ELC year. Those are the closest comparisons and the ones that I assume you used. 9.5 is the expected average, but it could be anywhere from Gaudreau (8 million adj) to Eichel (11.7 adj). I doubt he'll demand Eichel money, but I could be wrong. I tend to lean towards a 8.5-9 million deal which is just under what Kucherov got. (Albeit on a 24-26 contract)</div></div>
