I would say 9.5-10.5 is where Panarin falls. Karlsson is going to be 11-11.5 IMO. He's better than Doughty and will want to be paid as such, regardless of his past injury issues. Just my opinion.

The difference between RFA and UFA deals. Teams can compete with each other to way overpay. Anyone signing Panarin to 11ish million will likely regret it in 2-3 years. Doesn't mean someone won't do it. Honestly I think someone will regret 9 million by year 4. But if I had to guess he'll get high 9s to low 10s.

Nah, gotta stick with them. If you're looking for a second team to cheer for, I always look towards the middle of the league and follow one of them. That's how I became enamoured with the Islanders a couple years ago. I suggest a team like Florida, Dallas or the Rangers; on an upward trajectory, but still kinda mediocre

To all those who think Marner should be making North of 10 mil
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jamiepo</b></div><div>That comparable can be applied to any team.... something to keep in mind.
So both of you seem to think marner is going to get more than Rantanen...
Last 2 seasons...
Rantanen 154gp 60g 111a 171p
Marner 156gp 47g 108a 155p
One of these players is playing for their home town team which is a cap strapped contender. How anyone thinks that Marner is making more than him is beyond me. I could certainly see them taking the same amount.
The argument of leafs other rfa’s Is pointless as any player in the league can point to them.</div></div>
Tired to say it many times, but why I think Marner's cap hit is bigger is because of taxes and whatnot. Colorado is much more tax friendly. Even if Marner's getting $10,366,000 as I predicted, it's still less than what Rantanen's gonna hold.
See here: <a href="https://gavingroup.ca/nhl-tax-calculator/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://gavingroup.ca/nhl-tax-calculator/</a>
According to this, $10,366,000 in Toronto is roughly over $9M in Colorado.

To all those who think Marner should be making North of 10 mil
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>The taxes thing is quite exaggerated by people not understanding how the taxes work. For players who play in an American market you are charged at the tax rate of when you earn the money. Ie when you're in New York, you pay New York taxes, when you're playing a game in la you pay California taxes. So the tax break only applies to home games (I am not sure about Canadian away games. May apply there as well). Remember also that while these states don't have state taxes they still have significant budgets and need to make their money somewhere so they pay higher taxes in other areas (one area is often property tax). Living there will eat into some more of their money in other ways.
Now Toronto is for sure a higher tax environment and Tampa a lower one, but a lot of the estimates out there of like 30% differences are large exaggerations. These guys (should at least) be paying accountants to optimize their tax situation and are likely looking at significantly less difference.</div></div>
Taxes are different in canada. Also players dont pay taxes for the away games, thatd be ridiculous (even in jobs where you travel, that would be a nightmare.) Theyre salaried so all their state taxes are from the state where their team is located. Unless their residence is in a different US state, which how that states addresses income earned in a different state varies but they also pay income taxe in the state it is earned. But even then were talking 3 to 5% differences in the US (for a US citizen)

My predictions are:
Point = $9M x 6
Marner = $10,366 x 6
Aho = $9M x 8
Rantanen = $10M x 8
Tkachuk = $8,75M x 7
Laine = $9,5M x 6

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NucksFanForLife</b></div><div>Yeah, that’s probably a better analysis. Sergachev is hugely sheltered, and really hasn’t been able to show who he is. Though from what we saw last year when McDonagh wasn’t around, we can safely assume that Sergachev is a 40-50 point D man on most teams and has 60+ point potential. Girard’s ceiling is far lower. He is slightly worse than Sergachev right now, but things could swing waaayyy out of proportion should Sergachev develope properly. Which is why he was worth Drouin and Girard was worth far less. Don’t forget that Sergachev is a top ten pick.</div></div>
True, my main point is just that when trading Drouin Avs would not be giving up Girard+Jost+1st... probably Girard and 1st is good value

Yes, correct. Guessing nobody here is a tax lawyer specializing in this topic.
Honestly, Aho’s deal isn’t going to be compared to Matthews. We are entering an era where term is going to be more important than anything. I guarantee that Canes are pushing for 8 years, and that’s going to drive the price more than taxes.
I’m in the minority here, but I think Aho is going to get $10M + for 8 years.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NucksFanForLife</b></div><div>Now before you crucify me for not understanding taxes, their are many different things to factor in. Your overall income tax in Ontario is about 53%. In North Carolina it is approximately 44% on an $8M income. Sales taxes are far higher in Canada, property taxes in Toronto are higher than, say, Tampa. Food costs far more, gas is more expensive, housing is more expensive, and the price of living in general inflated Canada’s numbers. It’s not blown way out of proportion, but it plays a big factor in how much a player makes.</div></div>

Question
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NucksFanForLife</b></div><div>Why? Like Tampa won’t match a 9.5 million offersheet. They easily can do it. They’re honestly not as tied in the cap market as some people think. Ship out Miller/Gourde and Callahan and they’ll have a ton of space. Cernak can replace Stralman, Sergachev can play on the opposite site too if necessary. Foote will be ready, and they have a wealth of prospects to replace Miller or Gourde. I’m saying this to prove that Point will stay because A, Tampa is the best team on the planet by a mile, B, they have the cap space to match almost any offersheet, and C, honestly if it gets too high, take the 4 first rounders and shoot for Panarin. My prediction — 6/7x9-9.5</div></div>
Why does Callahan waive his NMC? He wants to win and that's the best place to do it. TBL certainly does have a wealth of prospects, but there's ZERO chance an offer sheet happens. GM's aren't that stupid now that Garth Snow and Chia are gone... They see the tight situation TBL's in. MAYBE you can move other players...with large cap hits...that don't have a NMC, but this TBL team next year can barely fit under a $90M cap let alone an $83M cap. TBL will be in the same position as TOR was with Nylander, BUT the difference is that TBL doesn't have the cap space. That's why NO other team will offer sheet. TBL's in a position were they're FORCED to sell something. Whenever you're forced to do something...(Stan Bowman...Bickell/Tuevo for scraps...Sharp/Stephen John for Daley) You get FAR FAR less in return.

I care. Actually, I'm kinda wondering how this affects the players in the future. Are free agents going to want to play for that crowd? Will players be more open about their thoughts as they approach free agency, or less open? I'll be keeping an eye out for some kind of Tavares effect.

As a Leafs fan.. they have every right to cheer or boo former player. Yes they didnt cheer him so? The atmosphere was amazing in the building and Tavares handled it like a pro. they needed to let him know their feelings and they did it. Great game for Isles, move on, learn from mistakes and trust the process.

It's fair but there was a reason why Marners camp is waiting, if he out scores Mathews in points, plays more games and does more for the team then he is asking for the same money. Kucherov never hit 100 points during ELC, lives in Florida with no tax and signed it a couple years ago when the % of the cap is still probably close to the same.
Like I said, I think the Leafs will be lucky for $10 million

You say compromise with Marner by lowering the number and adding a year but its the exact opposite. Another year means he would want more money because you're buying a UFA year. I think the Leaf's will be lucky to get him at 5×$10

The leafs offering an extra year for Marner isn't a compromise for Marner to take less money. An extra year will cost the leafs more money. That's a year of UFA that Toronto would be buying from Marner. Also since the cap is expected to rise every year, than players cap hits too should rise with longer term due to inflation. The only reason teem should lower a cap hit is if the player is old, which isnt the case here.
This Matthews contract was terrible by Dubas. Matthews will be a UFA when the deal expires, and it's not like he took a discount. I feel like they shouldve been able to lock him up for 8 years at $12M or $12.5M, at 5 years the cap hit should have been closer to $10M. Those are only RFA years. A team would have had to give up 4 1st round picks to get Matthews for an offersheet at what he signed at. Even then Toronto could have just matched the offer sheet if they felt it was worth it.

Best LHD Option young and top 4 only one
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NucksFanForLife</b></div><div>Not Brodin, the asking price will be astronomical. Maata is a great reclamation project. He’s a bit slow, so that’s definitely a problem, but he could still be a solid middle pairing guy, and at this point top pairing in Montreal. Nurse’s asking price will be sky-high too, but he’s probably my favourite option. Maata is the best option though. Montreal shouldn’t give up prospects at their point. They’re loaded for the future.</div></div>
I agree that Brodin, Nurse request would be high... and everyone says that we need to keep all our young one... If it's for a 24yo TOP LHD that would help MTL for years I don't mine.
We don't need all those forward prospect: Teadale, Evans, Vedjemo, Verbeek, Pezetta, Waked/
All we need is to keep 2 A+ Prospect F: Ylonen, Olofson, Fonstad keep 3 D: Juulsen, Ramonov, Brook, Olofsson, Fleury,
and try to keep all Blue chip: Peohling or Suzuki for the next 3-4 years as our team is very young.
So trading 1A+ F + 1A+D or ONLY ONE BLUE CHIP If it really worth it it a spendable move that MTL can do IMO
