Contending Again
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Newanda</b></div><div>The biggest free agent the Devils signed last year was Eric Gryba, the year before that it was Brian Boyle. I don't think Shero is the type of GM to address issues by free-agency, I think he will give chances to younger players, Bastian/ Mcleod/ Boqvist/ Smith/ Quenneville/ Anderson, like he did in PIT. If something is missing at the beginning of the season I think he is more likely to make a mid season trade like Henrique for Vatanen.
However this might mean Hall not resigning and being traded so it will be interesting to see what happens July 1st.</div></div>
I don't think he targets 2 top 6 wings in free agency, but Shero has been clear that Free Agency is a tool used when your team is ready, not before then. Prior seasons, the Devils were not "ready." Shero did target Maroon, and were making calls and offers for JVR, but neither panned out. I think this is the first offseason to truly see if Shero will use free agency as another tool, or if he tries to work his magic through trades and the draft, again. Either way, the team is close (although that greatly depends on Hall being healthy for the full season).

NSH and WPG Trade
While I don't dislike this, I wouldn't pull the trigger on the Greene trade. By far the most efficient penalty killer on the roster (along with Coleman). Also, Vatanen is actually a RD, and this team SHOULD be in position for a playoff run, so trading away Greene for a 3rd (which is less than the return Ray received for Lovejoy) is not a trade I would like to see happen.
I would hate losing Coleman, but to get Ellis in return, would be worth it.

I would actually have Kapanen with Nico and Hall, then be able to slot Bratt and Palmieri on the wings for Hughes.
I'll sweeten the pot and throw an additional 3rd round pick at you for Kapanen. Done deal

Is it enough? Yes. Is it a massive overpayment? Also yes. Giving up the 2 most promising prospects currently in the system, the current #1 defenseman, and a 2nd round pick, while also taking back Spooner... I would be disgusted if Shero did this

Absolutely not on the trade for Callahan. If you're taking on that contract and helping Tampa out of a jam, you need way more in return

Pulling Kapanen from Toronto
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SammyT_51</b></div><div>Kapanen is speedy scoring winger who can kill PKs greatly. Bratt for Kapanen would help both teams imo. Bratt is playmaking smallish winger and Kappy speedy jerk. I would not do it if Leafs get Wennberg so they will pair Wennberg with Kapanen. But if they keep Kadri, Bratt would be nice option on his LW or RW, likely RW.</div></div>
From the Devils sake, that is a step sideways, IMO. Both very good players, and I agree about the PK help, but you're losing a player with enough speed/creativity to play with Hughes in that trade. It helps Toronto clear until Marleau's contract is off the books, which is very enticing to that team, but it simply opens an additional hole in the NJ lineup.
As far as comparable quality, it's a decent return. But, from a Devil perspective, it doesn't help move the needle forward enough to pull the trigger.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SammyT_51</b></div><div>What about some kind of Bratt for Kapanen deal?</div></div>
From the Devils perspective, that doesn't make much sense. Bratt performs, is young, and can play both wings. Devils are searching for a right shot forward, but losing Bratt to accomplish it doesn't move the needle for the team. That just creates a different need

Perhaps
I don't hate this trade (aside from moving Zacha AND McLeod to a team that is already top heavy with centers), but I don't think this is the type of trade that will address Toronto's needs very well.
Vatanen is on an expiring contract with a likely salary increase coming, while Liljegren has such an up-side that Toronto doesn't otherwise have in their system.
This also leaves the cupboard rather bare for the RW position in Toronto. Palmieri plays a gritty style, and this tends to lead to missing chunks of time every season with some form of a "banged up" reason. The 2nd line RW in Toronto would then become...?
All of that said, I LOVE the idea of getting Kapanen onto the Devils roster. I just don't think these two teams are big deal trade partners. The only way I can see the Devils plucking Kapanen away from Toronto will be through the use of picks and a prospect/low salary, yet efficient player.

Ty Smith almost made the opening night roster last season. To predict he doesn't crack the top 7 in 2019-20 is selling him very short. If you listen to Tom Fitzgerald talk about him, he not only expects him to make the roster, but be an impact player as this upcoming season. Also, I could be mistaken, but if he doesn't play in the NHL, I think Smith goes back to Juniors, because he does not meet the AHL age requirements. If this is the case, it will likely stunt his growth, as he was already the best defenseman in that league last season

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Newanda</b></div><div>The Devils need to do something about their defense: they were in the bottom 10 last year and I doubt just adding Ty Smith would make them much better.</div></div>
Agreed. And, with a stockpile of 2nd and 3rd round picks, I feel as though this will get addressed. Carrick seemed to step up and be an upgrade once acquired, but I do agree that a right shot defenseman should be a priority. That being said, the Kinkaid/injured Schneider combination didn't help. Once Schneider got healthy and Blackwood was in the mix, that alone improved things in a big way.
The primary targets are top 4 (top 2, even) right shot defenseman, and a Right Shot wing. 9 or 10 left-shot forwards seems to not be ideal, either.

Good call, I thought it was any team's picks in those rounds, but you are correct. It still is a better snapshot of the market value for him. That being said, there are 15 teams that can currently throw an offer sheet at him, and unless it wasn't signed by Nylander, no one in the market has valued him at that price with that compensation.

NJD Enough for Nylander
Okay, my curiosity with this would be... why would New Jersey give up so much, when all they would NEED to do is offer sheet Nylander? If you throw $7.5M for 7 years at him, you lose a 2019 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. They aren't in a cap-crunch situation, so clearing out those salaries isn't important. Giving up your #1 D and 2 2nd line forwards, and 2 picks is a bit extreme for THE RIGHT to sign a player to be the highest paid player on your roster. If you want him, you offer sheet him and put Toronto in a situation to match it or not.

Also Sherbak brings talent to your top 6/9</div></div>
Not going to address the rest, but Smith almost made the team this year. He's not 2-3 years away, he was on the cusp this year. He is incredibly likely to make the team and be a key component to the D core next season. Shero isn't moving him, especially not for anything short of a #1 defenseman

Gross overpayment for a player that doesn't address the #1 team need, in my opinion. Devils and Toronto aren't good trade partners simply because they both need to build up the blue line.
But, if they were in the Nylander sweeps, giving up that much for him just doesn't make sense. It'd make more sense to offer sheet him at the $7.25M and if he signs, you send the 2019 12st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks to Toronto. No need to throw so much more at him and then sign him

Faulk is RD, but Vatanen is LD, so it balances out.
That being said, overpaid for Duchene (UFA in a year, no need to give up so much to get him right now), and definitely underpaid for Faulk.

E. Karlsson trade to Carolina
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>I agree wholeheartedly with everything you say after the first five words, which keep me from understanding the counter-argument you seem to be making.</div></div>
What I am saying is, pending UFA or not, the player's value is traded for as though he were already signing an extension that is often discussed in the talks prior to the trade. The market for a player like Karlsson is still significant, because it operates under the assumption that the groundwork for an extension has been discussed and factored in between Karlsson and the GM trading for him.
In this specific trade scenario, I can just about guarantee that Justin Faulk is never removing Ottawa from his list of teams he is declining a trade to (15 team list, no chance he approves a trade to Ottawa). Even if he did permit that trade, this return needs to add at minimum a high end prospect and a 1st round pick (because, as I mentioned, for Carolina to even attempt this trade, it is safe to assume they have already spoken to Karlsson about that extension).
Karlsson's value, although maybe not 4 firsts, is still significantly higher than this trade offer, unless it comes with Bobby Ryan's contract as an anchor.

You discount the fact that most of these trades only come after the team trading for that UFA has had a chance to talk to the player. Seldom does it happen where a pending UFA gets moved to a new team and a deal is not reached almost immediately (with the exception of deadline moves).

Of course, not factoring other trades and signings + Injuries, this squad has the ability to compete in the division. With NYR, NYI, CAR and CLB taking steps back throughout the year, they can compete for a top 3 spot for sure in that division.</div></div>
Appreciate your feedback, and I don't see this roster staying the way it is that far forward. I don't know the details about Ryan's NMC/NTC and if it carries to the new team via a trade (many don't), which would likely result in him being a part of another trade, while retaining a portion of the salary (return depends on how he performs, of course). Also hard to predict prospect trajectory

Butcher played amazing, but was also severely sheltered with his opposition, among other things. That being said, I originally had him at $4M, and we shall see where he falls after this season. All of this is based upon what I see as a modest cap projection no moves to clear up cap space in the short term.
Also, don't forget that Kerfoot did the same thing to the Devils that Butcher did to the Avs, so we'll chalk it up to a trade that worked out better in the short term for the Devils

From what I see, this is a year out. Hopeful that Smith is on the roster in 2019-20. As for Wood, he's either getting a bridge deal, or a long term deal at what I would assume is right on the money. Original poster either thinks long term, or he thinks Wood will get a 1 yr bridge, and earn a long term at 3.75
Definitely agree that Ryan is getting a regular, likely top 6 minutes. 3 prospects, a player, and a pick are not getting the job done to land Karlsson AND have them keep 2.25 of Ryan's salary. And I don't think anyone is wanting to take him on at his full salary, either.
