I am not sure why the person who made this only chose 1 yr contracts for everyone, but 1YR, 10M is what his qualifying offer is for retain his RFA rights. Negotiating longer-term with the player, on the other hand, could bring that number down below 10M/yr.

I had seen talk about his skating and pace of play, and the former is no longer an issue. The problem right now is that he is not adjusted to the pace the NHL game moves at. I have no idea where you're getting lazy or scared from, he's been playing pro since he was a teenager and that was never an issue. I don't see that in his game, I see him processing a little too slowly.</div></div>
Regardless of the issue, we can both agree we really want him to piece it together at the NHL level. A guy who scored 26 goals in 52 games in the AHL doesn't lack the skill, clearly. He had a few games in NJ where he battled hard and was rewarded with more ice time and produced. Devils didn't do him any favors by keeping him in NJ rather than Utica for the bulk of this season, but whatever it is that has prevented him from converting his obvious talent to being an effective member of the lineup, it's hard to be confident that suddenly he'll be THAT guy next season. Let's hope he completely destroys any criticism of his game and can start looking like the player we hoped we had drafted

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pretzelcoatl</b></div><div>Awful analysis of Holtz. Making a player change to a style they're unsuited for is a recipe for disaster. He will be perfectly effective playing his style of game as soon as next year.</div></div>
Holtz has NHL skill, but he doesn't work in the system and the knock on his game when he was drafted and to this point in time is simply he doesn't have enough "compete" in his game. I am not saying he should be a 4th liner, nor change his game to be a grinder, but he plays the game soft and passive at this point. Every single one of us (myself included) had the exact same analysis of Holtz last season as "he'll be effective next year," and we were wrong. I hope he finds that next dynamic of his game to make himself an effective option, but if asking the kid to actually compete every shift is asking him to "change his style," then I guess we'll just get what we get with the kid. As I said originally, top-6 skill and could add tremendous value, but seems on the ice he's either lazy or he's scared, and I really don't think he's scared.

Graves likely getting a bit more on the open market, but potentially could choose to stay at that value.
McLeod likely getting more money than that on a 3 year deal,
Haula's contract very similar to Zacha's in Boston so basically going to have to add another 1.5M there.
Bratt and Meier both RFA's and Bratt's numbers are actually slightly better than Meier's, just curious where the extra $1.25M for Meier is warranted?
And what do we expect from Holtz next season? This doesn't really leave much wiggle-room for an underperforming, low intensity performance from the kid, and doesn't offer a way to get him out of the lineup when he underwhelms, as there isn't a scratched forward signed.

Holts doesn't have the slightest "grind it out" style to his game, which is a big reason he hasn't played much this season. If he changes his game accordingly, he has a top-6 skill. Until then, he has AHL All Star until he heads to Europe written all over him. I hope he adjusts his "compete" level and becomes an impact player, otherwise it's going to be a painful waste of a #7OA pick.
I did also vomit a little bit in my mouth when I saw $19M tied up between Bratt and Meier... I have never envied Toronto fans and I do not wish to feel that pain of a squandered opportunity year after year

Meier extension
I think Haula gets more on the open market, Graves is likely closer to $4.5-5M, based on similar players, and Nemec makes this roster next season. Wood, with his speed and physicality, likely gets a bigger offer somewhere, as well. All of that said, the "is Holtz going to hustle" question is a big one.
Basically, we need to hope the "Swiss committee" can convince Meier to take much less, and that he and Bratt both decide winning is better than the slightly bigger contracts. ($7.5M a piece, fingers crossed).
I think some of the contracts fall short of a "pipe-dream" but certainly are on the "best case scenario" end of the realistic spectrum

So, there's this guy in the system that I really think deserves a decent look... a late round draft pick from a few years ago named Jesper Bratt. I know it's a long shot, but I think Devils should offer the kid a contract. I feel like he has potential.

J Hughes Trade NJD Perspective
Wait, I want to understand this.... You want the Devils to give up a #1OA pick after 1 season as well as a (although overpaid, still quality) roster defenseman, and in return the Devils receive a 2nd line center, $10.4M in non-roster players, a 3rd pairing defenseman, a former 2nd round pick, and 2 more 2nd round picks?
This is a bit lopsided. I feel like the Devils need to throw Nico and Blackwood into the deal, just to balance it out

My daily stab
Way too much of a giveaway for Ghost. Zacha and a 4th is about the most I'd part with, and I still don't think I make that deal. Zacha is a strong 3rd line center to replace Zajac in his role in future seasons, while Ghost carries double the cap hit and doesn't seem to fill the role of a defensive defenseman the team needs.

Swap Coleman and Zajac, then flip Hughes and Coleman on that line and there is a good amount to like about this lineup. The concern is whether or not Boqvist can effectively play RW.

Eventually, I believe you are right. However, in this situation, you are putting very offensive minded players on a line together, and instantly making them a target for other teams to put their own offensive lines against them to pin them in their own zone. There needs to be some better defensive linemates to play with Hughes as well as for Bratt/Boqvist to create some sense of balance and mentorship in the defensive zone. The goal is to hopefully get these kids to improve in that area and then be able to play together, and become true threats in that department. (This is true for Gusev, as well. His play in his own zone needs to bump up a bit, just like Hughes, Boqvist, and to a lesser extent, Bratt

New Lines
I actually think that (provided Hall and Gusev develop chemistry and Goose can play the right side (which is obviously not what he is accustomed to), these pairs of Wings is actually close to what I'd hope to see kept together, potentially with some Center swapping:
Zacha in that 2C with Bratt and Palms would be interesting to see how that worked
Zajac in at 4C with Wood and Hayden could be an effective checking line, as well.
I am not saying these lines are perfect, but based on the guys playing to their strengths, it gives some defensive reliability throughout the lineup with some scoring threats up and down the lineup as well

Hall and Laine played the same number of games this past season... if by played, you mean "showed up to play."
Joking aside, yes, Hall's value isn't high enough to warrant a big, 21 year old sniper in return until he is proven to be 100% healthy again

Too much money for Carrick, not enough for Butcher, hopefully accurate for Zacha. Lines are a bit jumbled up, Zacha will slot into C not LW, Boqvist makes the team, as does Ty Smith.
I promise, I would do no better with the Rangers lineup. I am excited for the rivalry to reignite as well. Rangers have some moves still to make to get their team put together and under the cap.

You're referring to Wood as the overpaid Bottom 6 winger in this example? I will definitely disagree with you on that. His speed and grit alone give him value. I will, however, agree that he won't likely slot into a top 6 role until his puck possession skills improve. But, I think if anything, his contract was/is an absolute steal.
I believe Clarkson has already stated that his NTC list will include only the lowest taxed teams in the league, which means NJ will not make this list. I could be mistaken about this, though

I wonder if recapture penalty is able to be traded? I can't imagine that it would be. Also... with $3M less in cap space, which Devils are gone? Signing Hall, Hischier, Bratt, Petterson doesn't sound feasible with $3M less space than the rest of the league

Not a New Jersey fan but what do you think
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>nalzugaray12</b></div><div>Thanks for the response. When I was building the team I only signed Agostino because I didn't know how Devils fans felt about him so I brought him back to be safe. I'm a Boston fan and he wasn't a great player here, but it looks like he had a decent year for NJ this past year.
Also I saw your note about Zacha being played in a depth center position. I just personally don't think the man can take his game to the next level if he's in a fourth line role. Would it be crazy if Zajac played a 4th line center position? (Assuming Zacha outplays him)</div></div>
If the team acquires another top 6 guy, Zacha could be Centered between Boqvist and Bastian (potentially) which would be a great "3rd scoring line," in my eyes.
Zajac centering Coleman and Wood would be the checking line that could do wonders shutting down top lines, as well. Zacha is a very reliable defensive player who can chip in offensively. Zajac isn't getting any younger. The long term plan, hopefully, is for Zacha to slot in to that defensive center role in the future.
That being said, if Zacha is to slide to the wing, I think he'd be best suited 2LW with Hughes and Palmieri, moving Bratt to the 1RW role. Coleman has thrived on the wing, so if Zacha is playing LW, McLeod would likely jump up to the 4C role.
Sorry if that was a bit more information than you asked for

A few Notes:
1. Coleman likely to stay on one of Zajac's wings.
2. Zacha to slot in a depth center role, but I think that contract value is accurate.
3. Ty Smith makes this team without question. Ben Chiarot not signed as a result.
4. I don't see Boqvist in a Top 6 role, but I would love for him to click with Hall and Hischier.
5. Unlikely to see Agostino get a contract. More likely to have a spot for Bastian/Seeney/Rooney

Walsh is going back to Harvard, Greene is a very serviceable 3rd pair Defenseman. Bratt is naturally LW, so if Kapanen is acquired, no need for Dzingel. Boqvist should make this team in a depth role, and hopefully Bastian will, as well. I like the trade (probably need to add a cherry as I said above), but that's my target, too.

This draft, that is equivalent to most draft's late 1st rounder. I would tack on a 3rd Rd pick onto this exact deal. A cheap, physical, stay at home defenseman and 2 picks. That's more than Winnipeg received for Trouba. It also fills a need.
