I am torn right now on whether or not the Devils should keep Hall (that is if he wants to resign) : on one side Hall is the reason they made it to playoffs last year and was still 5th on the Devils in points by playing only a third of this year, on the other side he has been injury-prone, he will be 28 this season, you could get a great return by trading him before the season starts, and then build the team around what you get back/ Hischier/ Hughes/ Smith/ Severson/ Zacha/ and Bratt which would all, presumably, be under 25 by the start of next season.
I agree with that but outside of Panarin (and in my opinion Myers) I don't really think any are any outstanding UFAs this year. I know Karlsson is great but he seems to get hurt every year and at his price seems like too much and some just probably don't want to come to NJ. If the Devils cannot get Panarin, Myers, or Boyle back I would be fine with seeing how the youth turns out, especially if Hall doesn't resign before the season which is more likely if they do nothing big in FA.
I personally don't see Myers, I could definitely see Boyle coming back. I also truly believe we could be a sleeper in the Panarin sweepstakes, between the beaches, Hoboken, and the 20 min path ride to the city, Panarin gets much of what he's looking for. He also was interested in the atmosphere at the rink, I'm not going to say its MSG, but Evgeni Malkin is on the record saying the Pru Center is the toughest building for him to play in.
I put Mojo in because I know he loved NJ and didn't want to leave, Donskoi is right up Shero's alley, but theyll need to do more than Donskoi and Boyle for Hall to stay imo.
It's an interesting point regarding trading hall, the return would be nice, but when you look at the analytics and honestly just watch the games, Hall drives the game, it's very hard to make up for that type of presence. I think its a benefit that hes been so unsuccessful in his career, because at this point it isn't about money, and I think Hall is more interested in team friendly contract than being the highest paid winger, which gives Shero a lot of opportunity this offseason.
