Would rather have many years of Moore and Doughty than one of Marner.

Not to mention you need to have Marner waive his NMC as well as Doughty.

Even assuming Marner comes with an extension, I still wouldnt do it.

Wouldn't leave us with enough money to find a proper top pairing D replacement, and as much as we hype Clarke, hes definitely not ready for that role. And Spence is a fine 2/3 pairing guy.

We'd just be upgrading wings but losing in a more important part of the lineup.

So even if Drew waives his NMC, we're going to add Trevor Moore to this deal because Kampf and the $1 million retention adds to our cap burden?

I don't think so.

I don't think that Los Angeles would do this if you took Moore, the retention and Kampf out of it.

The worst years of Doughty's career for the prime years of Marner (saying 1 year is disingenuous, if he's waiving for a trade, he will sign there). Moore and the rest is irrelevant, it's a slam dunk win for LA.

Take it all out and look at the headliners. A 27 year old Marner who absolutely would come with an extension (why would he waive for a trade and not want a contract?) for a soon to be 35 year old Doughty.

This site is so broken and fans are gonzo these days. Why on earth would anyone ever trade a 27 year old super star for a 35 year old who's best days are well behind him. Doughty is still good but he's not what he was 8 years ago. And that is how many years older he is than Marner.

Seriously anyone not saying yes to trading a soon to be 35 year old defenceman with 4 more years of term, for a 27 year old is just silly. This is an absolute crushingly bad deal for TO.

That's hardly his fault. He has two Stanley Cups under his belt already. He and Anderson have done a good job at keeping McDavid off the 5v5 scoreboard in the playoffs. This postseason, Doughty wasn't on the ice for a single power play goal against, despite being one of the main penalty killers on the team.

Doughty just put up one of the best seasons in his career. I'd rather have Doughty over Marner for the same money next season, and that's even before considering that Marner gets more expensive after that.

Doughty isn't likely to retire when his current contract is over, so it's not just 3 more years of Doughty either.

This has been most Toronto trades since the leafs got eliminated.

Toronto wants to trade a guy with a NMC, who they haven't opened any discussions with on an extension or a trade. They are assuming he would come with an extension and he would waive wherever would maximize his return. Which in reality he is most likely playing in Toronto next season, and his new coach has already reached out to him, which would seem odd if he has no place in Toronto after this offseason.

Calling Moore irrelevant is a bit difficult as he is LAs leading goal scorer and on a contract more than half of Marners. He on a cost per point basis is a more valuable player and signed longer than Marner, not to mention his center is Danault, while Marner has had Matthews as his most consistent parnter.

Why do you believe that this is guaranteed?!?!?

Maybe Marner doesn't think the way that you do. Maybe he says to himself, Screw this -- half of Leafs Nation wants me to be traded despite the fact that I've always given everything I have to the team -- I'll go somewhere else for my contract year where I can put up some big numbers and get my Pastrnak money next summer. Or maybe he just decides that Toronto is a dead end and he'll increase his value with another team. You don't know anything to the contrary because you're not inside his head.

Those of us who are realistic and not hopeful see no guarantee that Marner will automatically sign an extension now before being traded, although to be fair the Los Angeles precedents of Kevin Fiala and Pierre-Luc DuBois are suggestive.

Could there by a worse trade for the Leafs.....that New Jersy trade.

I imagine Marner and Doughty don't waive. Leafs IMO are better just riding out this season with Marner and next summer have his 11m off the books. Yes they still have to find a RWer

You are the biggest Kings fan on here so that checks out. But no rational person would ever keep a 35 year old over a 27 year old. 8 years apart in age. That's a major difference.

No, fools who can't handle their emotions want to jettison Marner into the sun. Anyone rational only wants to move him for value.

It's logical. Why would he waive his NMC (the only way he can be traded) only to not sign? He wouldn't. He will negotiate a sign and trade to get his money.

So Marner extended for Doughty? Come on. Doughty is turning 35. This is not a good move for TO. Take the bias out of it and look at it fairly. 8 year difference in age. One still has most of his prime ahead of him while the other is past his prime. Slam dunk loss for TO.

Then please rationally understand that Toronto needs to begin discussions as most teams are ramping up for free agency and won’t have an extra $11M laying around to facilitate these trades. LA is a very unrealistic destination for Marner as they still have to sign Byfield and a starting goaltender before looking at improvements at wing.

I don't think TO actually moves Marner. But if he's available, the return will be large and he will come with an extension. They will do a lot better than a soon to be 35 year old making 10+ million

Likelihood is he is just your next Kadri and walks in the off-season.

I get people think Doughty stinks but this last season was his best in over a decade and he is still one of the top ice time leaders in the league.. LA is ok having him finish his career here, he earned it and we really won’t care what other teams think when we put up his statue.

Oh dang that’s right. I’d prepare for less than Barrie unless you threaten to bench him or something. In which case good luck having your other core-4 players being happy about being pushed out of their NMC.

Less than Barrie eh? Yup this is par for this site. Marner is worth less than Kadri. Totally realistic
