Adams a Jack Adams

Description
How much is enough to trade away for a bonafide Top6 forward who put himself in the assistance program?
Seems like Laine needs a reset - Jarmo, who signed him, is no longer there, so bring him in for a fresh start.
Package:
NHL Winger, NHL-Ready Prospect, a college prospect (RD with an NHL pedigree) and a 1st round pick. Maybe too much risk - but really want the guy.

Skinner buyout is a needed culture reset.

Focus on speed and agitation.
Rebuild your 3rd line.
Tell Krebs to be an asshole like he can and play agitating 4th line minutes.

Ya, that's an easy no for the Sabres. He hasn't played 60 games in a season since 19/20 where he only played 68. He's also just not worth all that.

Laine is a .80ppg guy on a bad CBJ team, and has been a victim of bad hits, fluky injuries, and (oh yeah!) NHLPA assistance. Put him on BUF's offense, and he'd light **** up.

That being said, CBJ would love this, but I'd have a hell of a team convicning BUF this was the right move for them right now.

2019-2020? You mean the season that only had 68 games? A whole lot of guys only played like 60 games that year. The argument against the Sabres making this deal is plenty strong without using misleading numbers.

Ignoring the trade itself, you are essentially paying Laine more than Skinner to be the same player (Laine makes 8.7 mil skinners buyout cap hit is 1.7 mil, that equates to paying Laine 10.4 mil, why not just keep Skinner?) Also Skinners buyout might make sense for the 24-25 season at 1.7 mil but look beyond that, in 25-26 it jumps to 4.4 mil and you have to resign all of Byram, Quinn, Peterka and Levi, in 2026-27 the buyout costs 6.4 mil then finally drops to 2.4 mil the remaining 3 seasons, that is not a feasible solution.

That's the sort of deal it'd take for the Jackets to give up Laine, and it thus also serves as an excellent illustration of why it would be incredibly foolish for another team to try to trade for him right now.

He has played in 129 games (56, 55, and 18) over the past 3 seasons. That's definitely worrisome for a team giving up a lot of assets in a major overpay.

Again, you're cutting the 18 not just against injury, but against NHLPA-PAP. I'd give a bit more credit to that than just categorizing it in the same way as if it was an injury.

I had the exact same thoughts
First of all, Skinner is NOT getting bought out this year
Maybe next year when it makes more financial sense- MAYBE

But even if we did get rid of Skinner, why the heck would we replace him with another “lazy” guy who doesn’t play defense and has a huge Cap hit???
That’s frankly just a dumb idea that makes no sense at all

Thank you for actually seeing that part of this exercise.
Someone is going to move for him at some point. The hypothetical of him returning to hockey, being 26 years old and an elite top 6 forward is still there.

I'll rethink it, by simply doing another roster.

Everyone knows Skinner's reputation, that's not changing. The only way to move on from him will be a trade with retaining salary. Are you going to retain less than the buyout?

Also - the Salary Cap is not stagnant, it will continue going up, making his buyout numbers look slightly better.

Why don't you make a hypothetical Roster - your last one is from March 6.

Man, make a fake trade for a guy whose only ever scored 20+ and get roasted.

Sure, when he’s healthy, which he become increasingly rare

And Skinner was a ppg player last year (35g-47a-82pts)
Laine just doesn’t have that in him with all the injuries

Sorry dude, but you’re quite literally the only Sabres fan who thinks this is a good idea

Fair, now we know what everyone thinks.
If I put a 3rd Rd pick (Ala Kuznetsov out of the program) - it wouldn't have been enough.

The Sabres aren’t gonna buy out Skinner this year
No matter how bad u want them to

IN ALL HONESTY - I had a reasonable deal on a roster I made and then realized I didn't login.
So had to reset, get rid of Kulich and the 1st, maybe it looks reasonable.

Well aware, I can live in a space where I can pretend he's not dragging this team down with a dumb contract for the next 3 years.
