Agreed that the trade for Kakko isn’t a good one.

I can see the CHI being a decent one. D-Vo would get plenty of opportunity in CHI to build up value and flip him at the deadline. I think MTL has to add value in this and retain 1M$ of his salary. Then CHI can retain on him again at the deadline, offering D-Vo at a (roughly) 1.7M$ cap hit to someone as a depth center with good faceoff abilities. Probably fetches you another 3rd rd pick.

The VAN pick being sent to MTL is likely going to be a late 2nd rd pick, so it’s almost like stepping back a few spots in the draft to get an NHL caliber dman. Works for both teams.

If Montreal is going to trade the Winnipeg first round pick, Jordan Harris (in the separate trade) and a 2nd round pick then I would rather that they use all 3 of those assets in just 1 trade to try to move up from the position in the draft that the Winnipeg pick ultimately lands at.

As the others above have said, Kakko is not a big addition to the long term plans for Montreal. He has been in the league for 5 years now and has proven to be a 30 to 40 point player. That is not a key piece to the rebuild.

Why is Kakko worth more than Laffy was? Lol. I love Kakko but he is not worth that. And that is also why we ain't trading him smile

The 2nd is going the wrong way in the Dvorak trade and you can keep Harris. Hawks don't want or need him

Hawks easily decline. Dvorak takes a 2nd to dump in Chicago. And Harris does nothing to reduce that cost. Another young LD is the last thing the Hawks are looking to add.

Your assessment would be a good one if the Hawks were looking for a LD. Which they are not. They are loaded w/ young LD already. Harris would hold zero value in this deal to the Hawks since LD is not an organizational need in the least.

Kaapo is probably worth a late 1st or 2nd rounder, but not a mid 1st and 2nd rounder...big over payment and NYR probably aren't going to sell low on Kaapo at this point even though they should

Lol why would they? He plays a role for this team and is cost-controlled. A late first is useless for us at this point.

Who can we get with a late first at $2.1M who plays RW and as effective or better than Kakko?

Yeah he’s nothing special but he’s effective for the role he plays and was injured this year to build off a respectable season last year. It all comes down to what helps the team more and picks just don’t do it unless they are along the lines of the poster’s package.

Honestly, just look at the last couple off seasons and trade deadlines. There is a lot NY could probably do with a 25th overall pick that would be more effective than Kakko. Though, you'd probably be better off asking for a future 1st, and then using it at next seasons TDL to address roster needs. Kakko is due a raise anyway, his QO this summer is $2.4M, and I wouldn't be surprised if him and his agent wanted more. So use that money to pay someone else Roslovic, promote an ELC guy like Othmann to the NHL full time, and re-assess at the deadline next year... That is, IF Drury is ready to move on.

What would they be able to get? I see the NYR signing him to a $2.5/2yr extension but if they can trade him for someone young and skilled they would do it. There is no chance they move on from him to re-sign someone like Roslovic. It would have to be a Dach/Romanov type deal which I can’t see a team doing at this point in time. Maybe would’ve worked last year after his 18-goal, 40 point season at 21-22 Y.O.
