The Leafs print money!

What are you talking about?

Oh you mean cap space?

Well UFA Chatfield isn't taking 1 mil. LOL

Abracadabra is AHL fodder.

He won't be on the team.

Michigan boy Roy probably signs with Detroit.

Bert probably signs with another team looking for a bigger payday.

He won't get that in Toronto.

Domi probably takes 3 mil again to stay.

Kampf contract is trade proof.

He's not going anywhere.

Jarnkrok stays and that's a good value contract for Tree.

Timmins likely stays to be the 6/7D.

Trauna boy Tanev likely signs.

Liljegren gets 3 mil not 2.

Not sure what Tree will do at goalie?

Tree will figure it out.

Leafs are actually in pretty good shape for next season.

What is this dumb narrative that every player wants to sign with their hometown team? It’s dumb. Not every player wants to and there’s been no indication that Roy wants to or that Tanev has to be the guy that Toronto brings in for that reason. So stop making stuff up.

Kampf’s contract isn’t as bad as users on here make it seem to be. He’s exactly what he’s always been - a bottom 6 defensive minded centre that helps a PK unit and can relied upon to win key faceoffs. Is he slightly overpaid? Sure you could make that argument. But that’s more because people think he should put up more offence but he’s not paid to do that. The issue isn’t with his contract but it’s because the core 5 take up so much cap space that teams know Toronto may have to move Kampf for cap space so the return will be low. But it has nothing to do with the player or his contract.

Jarnkrok is a very likely trade candidate in the off-season. Yes he’s very useful as you’ve said, but he doesn’t play the style that Treliving envisions for a bottom 6 role and there’s just no room for him in the top 6. But because he’s a very useful player that coaches and teammates absolutely love, he’ll have value and can get them a good asset in return plus free up some cap space. So there’s a good chance he’s dealt this summer.

Leafs are actually in a very tough spot for next season. They have a little over $22.5M in cap space to sign 8-10 players - that’s an average of $2.81M per player on the high end and $2.25M per player on the low end. And they have some pretty significant holes to fill that won’t be cheap:
- middle 6 centre that can play some 2C
- 2nd pair left handed defender
- top pair right handed defender
- bottom 4 right handed defender
- reliable, capable, veteran backup goalie

Plus they need to be able to retain their depth. All of that with VERY limited draft picks and almost no prospects ready to make the jump to full time NHLer yet. This will definitely be a tough off-season for management to keep the team as a contender.

Domi since Marner's injury has stepped up the playmaking role and has more 5 on 5 assists than even the big 4

Believe he's tied for 6th in the NHL

If it was between either guy for an extension lean more to Domi. Bertuzzi I would still pay just not in the 5m range

That said to improve the D got a feeling Bertuzzi's gone in FA anyways

No.

I never saw Bert as anything more than a 1 year guy for Toronto.

As you said his money needs to be used on improving the D.

5 games besides matthews isnt really impressive, and he's still an absolute black hole defensively. I pay 1/4 more for Bertuzzi every day of the week, especially since he actually contributes to team defence and fits beside both Tavares and Matthews. You get basically the same cap space if you just dont sign edmundson to play 7th D and you still come out ahead on both goals for and against

Never was really brought in for defense so its kind of meh to that. We got other defensive guys on the team

Domi's playmaking allows for options besides shoving Marner with Matthews all the time and since Bertuzzi-Matthews-Domi have been made into a line its looked pretty good and once Marner comes back we can reunite him with JT.

Domi being 6th in the league at 5 on 5 assists and only behind McDavid in assists per min had made him a nice addition

1st paragraph was fairly accurate imo. Lots of factors go into decision on where a FA player signs - a lazy narrative to assume professional players would sign for their hometown team

Timmins is unmoveable when will TOR get over that fact and stop trying to dump him on other teams.
No one is paying 1 mil per year to dump a guy in the AHL where he belongs.
You signed a really dumb contract.... you are stuck with it.

Really dumb contract, how do you figure ? Timmins has one year left & can be sent to minors with no cap penalty; opposite of a dumb contract in fact

because no one wants to pay a guy in the AHL 1 million per.
That's why. It's really simple.
AHL teams don't make money. No one want's to balloon their salary cap. When a lot of other guys in Timmons role, are on contracts that are worth far less. Younger players there are making 80k a year, some of the older ones, 500k or under. Who needs an AHL/ 7th defenseman tweener at 1 mil per. No one!

The Leafs are made of money; they can send him to minors (doubt he clears waivers blowing your argument to bits btw) so no harm, no foul. If he clears waivers, he’s available for injury call up. Exact opposite of a dumb contract
