Yeah that is not nearly enough to get celebrini.

Replace Xhekaj, Xhekaj, Barron, and the 3rd with another top 10 pick and you'd be there value wise.

The gap between 1st and 5th value wise is about equivalent to somewhere betwen the 3rd and 4th overall pick

Now tell me, if you had 4th overall and a team offered you a contender's 2025 1st, 3rd, Barron, and Xhekaj, would you trade it?

Arent you one of the folks that said Monahan wasnt getting a 1st? You dont seem to learn that you have no idea about value or simply ignore all context with trades. Its time NHL fans sat down and listened to Habs fans who have been proven right more often than wrong

I guess it really depends on what's gonna happen with that Calgary pick. My favorite pick value tool is puckpedia, and according to them, a fair trade up from 5 to 1 would be something like

SJ Sharks receive : 2024 5th overall, 2024 6th overall, 2024 58th overall
MTL receives : 2024 1st overall

If you think whoever holds the 6th overall pick would accept Barron, Xhekaj squared, and calgary's 2025 1st rounder for it, then its probably of fair value. I think the Sharks in this specific instance would probably prefer more quality over quantity, especially if youre trading the 1st overall pick

Islanders would do a pick swap. Lets say 14OVR for 30OVR and Matheson.

I said NJD wouldn't pay a 1st for Monahan because he is too slow and doesn't fill a need
I said that there is no way a fringe playoff team offers an unprotected 1st for Monahan
I said Monahan wouldn't return a 1st+

No team is trading celebrini.

let alone for a collection of spare parts.

The historical value of a 1st overall is equivalent to 4th overall+5th overall combined.

Now tell me, would you trade your 5th overall pick for Arber Xhekaj and a contender's 1st?

Those pick value charts always take the average value of the pick. No context between how strong a draft is. Reality is, the difference between Celebrini and Parekh for example is much smaller than traditional difference between 1st overall and 5th. These charts also dont take into consideration the potential of a player during the draft discussions. They just take the data the how many NHL players come from this pick and create a value for it. In you draft in the top 10, you arent drafting for just a bog standard NHL player, you are drafting who you believe will be the best NHL player and for many teams, based on the positions of need. Those values arent taken into consideration when calculating a picks value.

An example of the pick chart not working is the Sharks making a trade with the Yotes in 2022. The trade was 27, 34,and 45 for 11. Sharks ended up getting essentially a late 2nd in extra value but got smoked in the trade because they couldve had Denton Mateychuk, Rutger McGroarty or Jonathan Lekkerimaki with that pick instead of the bums they drafted. The pick chart would say the Sharks won that trade. Everyone else says they lost it very badly.

This trade i proposed gives the sharks 4 things

a top 5 pick to draft a forward of slightly lesser value (Catton over Celebrini isnt that large of a gap) or a Dman like Parekh
a #4/#5 D man right now (Xhekaj has been on the 2nd pair for months now and is actually succeeding there with Savard)
A former 1st rounder with NHL experience in Barron
And a late 1st the next year

The Sharks have 1 future D man on their roster in Shakir Mukhamadullin. Theyll be garbage next year as well giving them another top 5 pick. (There is 1 Dman projected to go top 10 next year and the drop off for Dmen after Hensler is crazy).

Celebrini isnt a franchise changing player. Hes amazing but the gap in potential between him and Parekh is much smaller than then gap between a top 5 forward in 2025 and a Dman in 2025. Argubaly, there are 2 players just as good as him in Hagens and Martone. Add in Misa, Frondell, McQueen and Ryabkin, youve got 6 elite forwards

Celebrini is good but he isnt a franchise level player. Theyd actually be better off trading it and getting 4-5 extra assets (and still drafting an elite player in Catton or Parekh) and then getting another elite forward in 2025 and 2026. Theres a lack of Dmen in the next 2 drafts. This is the draft to get an very elite one (theres like 4 elite Dmen in this draft, compared to like 2 in 2025 and 2-026 combined)

The gap between Celebrini and Parekh is massive.

Xhekaj plays less than 16 minutes a night on a bottom feeder at age 23 with a stint in the AHL. That is not a number 4/5 dman. That is a number 7 dman.
Barron is at risk of being waiver fodder next year.

Swap in Guhle and maybe you'd have an argument

Montreal fans said they would get a 1st for Petry, Edmundson, and then Petry again. They also said Anderson would get 1-2 1sts, David Savard would get a 1st, and some even had Jake Allen going for a 1st. Habs fans were proven wrong on all of those

Celebrini is a 17 year old who's the best player in college hockey.

In terms of the last 10 1st overalls

Bedard, Hughes, Mcdavid, Matthews>Celebrini>Power, Slaf, Hischier, Ekblad, Lafreniere

Yeah same, Habs fans are ridiculous.

I think the only thing the habs could maybe offer is 5th overall+Guhle+2025 Panthers 1st. But even then the Sharks should just take Celebrini.

Now to be consistent, do an ACGM with Montreal winning the Celebrini lottery and then trading that pick to Columbus for #4 overall plus.

Then we can decide which idea is more idiotic.

You’re failing to account for the depth of this draft vs the 1st OA pick. Celebrini is a legit 1st OA pick but behind him the draft falls off substantially! There will be players picked in the top 10 that would have been picked in the 2nd round last year. If sharks get their 1st ever 1st OA I find it hard to believe they would opt to trade it.
You are also failing to acknowledge their Captain and long time top 6C Couture is facing a career ending injury and they traded their other long time top 6 C in Hertl so sharks have a huge hole to fill down the middle! Celebrini and Smith fix that issue easily and finding elite C is harder than finding quality top 4 D!
For reference look at the Jets, one of the strongest D cores in the league and like 1 1st round D in the group.

And for all the Montreal fans arguing Celebrini isn't a franchise piece, then why are you all arguing the sharks should do this? Almost like you guys are buying. A used car and picking it apart to get a better deal cause you know the value of the item your after is worth more than your trying to pay!

They don’t. There’s a very short list of players who are worth giving up a potentially elite 1C on his ELC. Montreal doesn’t have any of those players making a trade for the Celebrini pick impossible.

im pretty sur if they offered suzuki, caufield, slaf, reinbacher, hutson, our next 3 first and ghule the sharks would dot it. Anyway this is just an obvious ridiculous argument.

The argument isn’t you don’t have the pieces, it’s that you can’t spare the pieces needed to make this viable for both clubs, you trade all those and your team is worse off and if sharks accept this deal they are worse off, it’s just not a match.
