It's been about 2 weeks since the Calgary Flames asked Jacob Markstrom to waive his NMC for the New Jersey Devils.

Only problem is that the Flames didn't have a trade ready for Markstrom.

Makes no sense for two front offices to do the time of setting up a deal without clearing it through the player's contract clause. In this case, the full NMC makes it especially challenging as Conroy can't just get the NTC teams and go from there.

It was widely rumored that the deal was done. I think because Daws went on a 3 or 4 game hot streak Jersey likely got cold feet.

I don't think Marky gets traded but we'll see if a deal reemerges

Also you can't trade 2027 picks unless it's part of a previous years pick protection or condition. Hanifin won't sign that cheap either

If Winnipeg wins the Cup, Montreal gets a pick for 2027.

And my understanding is that Hanifin might only sign an extension with Boston.

Interesting. It's probably allowed due to the condition but there is definitely a limit on how far into the future you can trade.

Not sure where you heard that about Hanifin but the more recent reports is that he wants to go to Tampa. I wouldn't put much stock into any of these outside of wanting to go to the US

How it sounds it all went down.

Fitzy and Conroy had ongoing conversation.
      Devils earlier offers were rebuffed.
At some point, Fitzy put Holtz on table.
Conroy then took it to Markstrom, who approved the move.
The deal was agreed to, Holtz-for-Markstrom.
It fell apart because Calgary owners did not want to retain.
Conroy tried to get other bidders involved, no one else was interested.
Now Fitzy has moved on to other options while Conroy tries to get ownership approval to retain.

I don't think Conroy is to blame (other than he tried shopping around after they agreed to deal).
Unless he ends up getting less than Holtz for Markstrom.

      Emily Kaplan:

"A Jacob Markstrom-to-New Jersey deal got so close, I'm told Markstrom didn't think he'd leave the area when the Flames were on a New York/New Jersey road trip earlier this month. It fell through, but I think the Devils are still aggressively looking at options, and Saros could be one of them. GM Tom Fitzgerald has full power from ownership to do anything he can to make the team better. Goaltending is the obvious need, even though 23-year-old Nico Daws has helped stabilize the situation lately. But an impact defenseman is also key as the Devils are vulnerable and inexperienced without top blueliner Dougie Hamilton."

      David Pagnotta:

"The New Jersey Devils are expected to circle back with the Calgary Flames and jump back into those Jacob Markstrom discussions. Terms of a trade were initially agreed upon by both General Managers, I’m told, but something broke down at the last minute – I suspect Flames ownership was not interested in paying part of Markstrom’s contract to have him play elsewhere. As we first reported at the start of the month, Markstrom is willing to sign off on a trade to the Devils. It’s now up to Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald and Flames GM Craig Conroy to agree on revised terms. Separate sources confirmed the Devils would send forward Alexander Holtz back in a trade with between $2 million and $3 million of Markstrom’s of annual cap hit retained. Markstrom is being paid $8 million in actual salary this season, and $6 million in each of the next two seasons, which includes a $2.5 million lump sum bonus payment each year. In order to make this move work, the two teams are going to have to figure out how to even out the dollars in some fashion. According to another source, Devils netminder Vitek Vanecek was not going back to Calgary in the initial trade. The Flames plan on moving forward with Dustin Wolf and Dan Vladar between the pipes if Markstrom is moved. With the expectation that the Devils and Flames revisit talks and try to make things work ahead of the deadline, Fitzgerald has been evaluating other options."

      Frank Seravalli (30-minute mark)

"Its been rather quiet on Markstrom front for ten days now....Markstrom is competitive guy and wants to win....They recognize that his value is never going to be higher than it is right now. You could have more teams in the mix over the summer with more cap space. But you are also seeing a market correction on what teams want to or are willing to spend on goaltending. And you are also dealing with a 34-year old. There are a lot of different facets to this proposed transaction that the Flames are trying to sift through....I think there is only one team that is in the market for Markstrom and that is New Jersey. There are three teams total that are looking for goalie help. Maybe four, if you include the LA Kings [CAR, COL, LAK, NJD]...but I don't see Carolina being a big player on goalie market. Colorado is not looking for number one. Based on what Kings have spent on goaltending, I can't see them spent on Markstrom. That is the market on Markstrom in nutshell."

      Beecher > Urho
Moore had two years and negative value.
Grz has one year, positive value. (at least a late pick)

      I'd guess...Beecher + 1st....maybe another mid-pick for retention.

You also spent big on Orlov.

And Orlov didn't even come with an extension.

Given Boston's trade history under GM Don Sweeney and that Hanifin would obviously sign an extension with Boston, something like this is well within the realm of possibilities.

Not to mention Hanifin is producing more offensively this season for Calgary than Lindholm is for Boston.

Back in 2015 when Boston had three consecutive first round picks, there were rumours that Sweeney made a huge push to trade up and grab Hanifin.

      Any truth to that ?

You also spent big on Orlov.

And Orlov didn't even come with an extension.

Given Boston's trade history under GM Don Sweeney and that Hanifin would obviously sign an extension with Boston, something like this is well within the realm of possibilities.

Not to mention Hanifin is producing more offensively this season for Calgary than Lindholm is for Boston.

Back in 2015 when Boston had three consecutive first round picks, there were rumours that Sweeney made a huge push to trade up and grab Hanifin.

      Any truth to that ?

uhhhh do you want me to try to tell you what don sweeney was thinking almost 10 years ago? ya, can't do that pal.

you're really just comparing apples to oranges here. Orlov is actually a pretty good comp. he came with hathaway and i think it was a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, with a cap dump.

so, you're in the ballpark. now, grzelcyk isn't craig smith. he's been a really good player in boston for a long time. i'm sure boston is more than happy to keep him if they can make the money work.

so how do we get from there, to a first, two seconds, and an NHL ready prospect?

      1. So, there is truth to that.

      Good.

If the Bruins managed to get Hanifin in 2015, they would have got an elite two-way defenseman instead of needing to watch Zboril turn into the highest picked bust of the 2015 draft.

But that's water under the bridge ...

      2. I am really just comparing apples to apples. Lindholm is a better comp for Hanifin than Orlov.

Calgary can have Forbort instead of Grzelcyk, but I could care less.

And why does Hanifin deserve a Lindholm-like package ?

Because Hanifin will sign an 8 year extension, he's of the same calibre, he was drafted about as high as Lindholm and he produces way more offensively on a weaker team.

      That's why.

      3. If Hanifin is moved to Boston, he'll became your new favourite toy.

And you'll become a way bigger homer over Hanifin than you are right now.

Alright, here's the problem - you're taking guesses and declaring them as objective truths. we don't know what sweeney was thinking at the 2015 draft (and why on earth does it matter at all? welcome to 2024). We don't know that Hanifin will sign an extension in Boston. I'm sure he'd love to be there, but if he thinks he's a $7.5M player, and Sweeney thinks he's a $6M player, then it's dead on arrival. Lastly, I know what hanifin is. he would be my fourth favorite boston d man....i wouldn't really care. good player, would be great to have on the team, but i just don't really care.

      Now:
      1. no, he isn't in the same conversation as Lindholm. nowhere close.
      2. no, his willingness to extend does not impact his trade value in a meaningful way. we have precedent for this. maybe it bumps a 3rd to a 2nd. it's not a big deal.
      3. no, we don't know that it's a lock an extension is signed.
      4. no, we can't just copy paste the lindholm trade. boston doesn't have a multi-year cap dump they want to ditch on a team, so it's just not really worth discussing.
      5. where a guy was drafted doesn't matter at all 10 years later. stop bringing it up as some reason why players are comparable.

Here is what's reasonable. All deals also have forbort going to calgary:
      a 1st, 3rd, and beecher/merkulov/other similar prospect
      Lohrei and a 2nd.

That's what is reasonable. maybe hanifin bucks a 20 year trend, but i kind of doubt it.
