Description
Devils are paying Meier 8.8m to sit on the 3rd line and score at a 0.5ppg. This trade frees up 6m in cap for 3 years, then 8.8m for an additional 5 years, and gives Mercer and Holtz a chance to move up in the lineup.

Garland is also stuck on the 3rd line getting paid a lot. Canucks save cap, gain a RHD with top 4 upside (with NHL experience) and a decent pick. Gally is a decent 3rd line guy still and hes a Vancouver Giant.

Dallas is pretty much a placeholder for a team, id just want any team acquiring Matheson to give up what a late 1st rounder would be worth

As a Canucks fan I can say Garland is definitely not wasted on the third line. He has fantastic chemistry with Blueger and Joshua and they are one of the best third lines in the NHL. Its been called by some the "Unbreakable" line because its the only line that the coach is not willing to mess with. Hope that helps.

By retaining 2.75 on Andersson you have in effect made 8.8m Meier a 11.,55 player for three years. Keep 5.5m Anderson and the first rounder.

Its a very good line and if the Canucks didnt need the money for help in other positions (Top 6, Top 4 D) and the OEL buyout cap coming, theyd be able to keep it. But 4.9m on a 3rd line winger when theres other areas of need isn't the brightest move

Then that makes Meier a 14.3m for 3 years and they have the Anderson roster spot. Habs arent gonna need that money for 3 years so id rather get rid of it now before he gets worse

Why? Meier is a 8.8m 3rd line winger. If they thought hed fit the top 6 rn, theyd be playing him there.

Check Meier....do you really want him for seven full season? He might be the next Andersson/Huberdeau. I'm doubting Meier waives for Habs anyway.

He's a 3rd winger just for fit really now. Haula just works with Jack, and Palat has been great with Nico. Anderson STINKS. I trust much more Meier is something, Devils need to figure out a 3C for the run with McLeod gone.

He doesnt fit the system. Believe me, he was able to cook with the Sharks, he'll be great on the Habs with Suzuki and Slaf

Even then I’d much rather have Garland on the 3rd line at 4.9M than Gallagher on the 4th or 3rd line at 3.25M. I just don’t see this deal making sense for the Canucks (even though I do really like Barron)

You dont drop a 8.8m player to the 3rd line because Haula works well with Hughes. You stick that player on the top line and make it work or you get rid of them

Gallagher can still play the 3rd line. Hes still top 15 in the league for xGF/60. He creates chances

Or you do what’s best for the team. If you wanted to trade Meier you’d stick him with Jack Hughes and on PP1 and pump up his value

Thats not how value works. They tried him on the top line and it didnt work. Haula was outplaying him. He just doesnt fit the Devils system. Even when he joined after the trade, all his numbers dropped.

hes averaging 0.5ppg at nearly 9m lol wdym hes more than fine. This trade gives the devils the money to resign Toffoli (whos better and cheaper), a LHD with top 4 potential and a 1st rounder, while getting a roster player and saving like 60m in salary. Meier needs a new scenery and no one will give this value for a player whos arguably a negative asset now

Again, he played a large portion of this season injured that significantly impacted his skating. He's been more than effective when healthy.

Don't want to resign Toffoli. He's the guy to trade, not Meier.

Anderson is god awful. No interest in the slightest.

If we want Harris we'll throw you a 3rd before you have to stick him on waivers.

Again, we'll keep Meier. Not trying to trade him

Value wise the Canucks trade is probably somewhat close, just don't see the Canucks doing that. Joshua-Blueger-Garland has been an amazing line and I don't think they'll break it up. If they do end up having to move Garland due to cap constraints, I'm sure they'd rather just move him for a pick, then sign someone to replace him (something similar to the Suter contract last offseason). That's cheaper, less term, probably a younger player, and all around less risk than bringing in Gallagher.

"Make it work", would be nice, but Lindy sucks as a coach. I'm not thrilled with Timo, but I certainly believe talent is there that some coach will work with next year. I don't agree that with the idea you don't put Haula in that spot when he can take faceoffs for Jack and do things Jack needs done to be better for the rest of the line.

I gotta think that the Canucks would do this though, the value is really solid and they're already looking like they won't be able to keep the line together. This may even give them to room to keep Blueger/Joshua, plus add the assets

Value wise it's pretty on point. Just doesn't seem like an Allvin-type move to me. With Gallagher, the combination of term, age, and sub-par play over the past few years just doesn't seem like a risk he'd be willing to take. Best case scenario you get Garland but $1.5M cheaper, which is nice. Worst case scenario, you get a $3.5M 4th liner/healthy scratch with 4 years of term. The potential risk just doesn't make sense with the relatively small potential reward.

I think if the Canucks move Garland, Allvin will be able to find a similar player who is younger than Gallagher and cheaper ($2-$3M) through free agency. If they chose to keep Garland and price themselves out of one or both of Blueger/Joshua, then Allvin will replace them through similar depth signings that pay off. Allvin has shown an amazing ability to identify bargain bin pickups who come with zero risk and end up providing major upside. The list of his bargain bin adds includes:

Joshua as free agent signings under $1M
Blueger and Suter as free agent signings under $2M
Aman and Bains as undrafted/rights expired ELC signings
Di Giuseppe and Juulsen as extending AHLers and calling them up to give them a shot
Lafferty for a 5th
Zadorov for a 3rd
DeSmith for a 3rd and cap dump (Pearson alone probably should've cost close to a 3rd to dump)

I have no doubt that Allvin would be able to replace Garland with a player who is younger, cheaper, and all around a better fit for the team than Gallagher should the Canucks have to move Garland.
