Ottawa paid the following for Chychrun:
#12 overall pick in 2023
Washington's 2024 2nd round pick (Currently #52 overall on Tankathon)
Ottawa's 2026 2nd round pick
My counteroffer to this AGM:
#11 overall pick in 2023 (Tom Willander)
Vancouver's 2024 1st round pick (Currently #28 overall on Tankathon)
Vancouver's 2026 2nd round pick
I'm not asking for much more than what we paid.
Cue the hyperbole.
You're ignoring the value difference between 11th and 12th overall; value-wise is somewhere between a late 2nd and early 3rd in terms of pick value.
2016 Draft
OTT acquires Pick #11
NJD acquires Pick #12 and Pick #80
2013 Draft
DET acquires Pick #20 and Pick #58
SJS acquires Pick #18
Comparable value would be Willander + 2nd, although I wouldn't do that as VAN.
A more reasonable trade based on the market would be the Canucks 1st + 2nd + prospect/3rd.
See these trades:
Provorov
Chychrun
Hronek
Gavrikov
We can also use another comparable trade with DeBrincat. The Senators traded Pick #7, #39 and a 3rd in 2024 for DeBrincat in 2022, then last offseason traded him for less than they got when he was an RFA; a Top-10 protected pick, a roster player, prospect, and a 4th.
Additionally, teams don't pay more for a player who has been traded within the last year, they'll pay the same amount or less for that player. There are countless examples of this in the trade history of the league. DeBrincat, Nate Schmidt, etc.
