My guess is they will give him the money, and try to survive next year with scraps. And the following year, both Marner and JT come off the books, freeing up 22 million and allowing Treliving to really carve the team in his own image. Marner might not be brought back in that circumstance.

That’s the equivalent to 12.5 + mil on a 7 year dear in free agency. No team is giving Nylander that. 11.5 is the absolute max Nylander might get offered in Free Agency and that’s the same as 10 X 8 in Toronto.

That's after you get him to re sign to a Canadian team.... unattractive and unrealistic offer.

Theres no reason he wont get 11 in UFA and maybe in a shorter term, 4 yrs for example, and still be able to get 8 mil at age 32.

Same old leaf style team that gets crushed in the playoffs when the going gets tough.

Logically that's correct and I think that's a much fairer number. But logic has never driven the Leafs contracts negotiations with their stars.
