Neither is Murphy. Dudes a glorified 3RD. You can ride the high of the overpayment for Mccabe, but if a team pays more than a 1st for Murphy that GM should never have a job ever again

He is not "a glorified 3-RD", he is a top 4 DEFENSIVE dman who has been mostly babysitting defensive liabilities on one of the worst teams in the league. Regardless, retention slots and cap space are valuable assets by themselves, any trade with retention costs more than without retention. So, if a team were to pay more for 3 years of retention, that isn't the same as "paying more than a 1st for Murphy", they are paying for Murphy AND cap space. A defensive dman who can effectively play 18-20 minutes a game at $2.2M for 3 seasons is not an easy thing to come by.

It doesn't seem like he's doing a whole lot of babysitting. If he's getting shelled playing 19-20 minutes a night then he's probably not that good. There's really no evidence to suggest he'd be all that good on a better team, either, as he's always been very mediocre throughout his career.

Again, paying for a player with and without retention are two different things. Last year CHI was another bottom of the league team with a lot of defensive liabilities.
