Gotta think Carolina at the very least declines to add the pick

That is a lot of money for Orlov and it runs into next year. Don't get me wrong, I like the player... but when Carolina made a power move to bring him in on a short term deal for over 7m, I think they kind of hitched their wagon to him. I don't think he's worth that much unless you think he can help you win it all.

Then there is no point in Boston doing the deal. Pick up a slightly overpaid defenseman when they could trade Ullmark individually and sign a player outright next offseason. The downside risk this year is pretty immense for Boston.

Carolina can look in the bargain basement or just go with their current two guys. Completely OK with that.

Not a fan of these moves for BOS

No interest in Raanta as backup and Orlov has been atrocious this szn and his cap hit is way too high, overall deal makes BOS worse and probably not worth the 2nd for compensation

Maroon is also garbage, there are better 4th line tough guys to target, plus Jack Edwards might have a heart attack if BOS acquires Maroon

Personally, I’m not ready to jump ship and say the Canes should go for a goalie. If anything, that just delays the problem. I would wait until the Canes are almost completely healthy before making that judgement call, since they haven’t been healthy all season, which I do think contributes to their poor play.

As for the trade itself, the Canes view Orlov as their Skjei replacement for next season, since in all likelihood, Skjei prices himself out. Orlov has had a rough start to the season, but so did Burns and Hamilton before him in their inaugural season with the Canes. It is a tough system to learn, and other problems have compounded the difficulty. That being said, he has looked really good and more like what you would typically expect of Orlov these past few games.

I was trying to think of whether or not there was a trade between these teams so Carolina could get a goalie, but this was my ultimate conclusion too: Boston needs a significant incentive to trade Ullmark given how much they have relied on goaltending this year, and I don't think it is Don Waddell's style to make that kind of trade. Carolina rarely trades their high end picks or prospects.

Garbage.... 🤨

*Looks at player page.*

Let's see... 3 goals, 8 assists, for 11 points through 26 games at an effective .40 PPG pace on Minnesota's 3rd line all season.

Yep checks out... 🙄

No thanks

Orlov as rental last year was fine. Trading Ullmark for him and he has term is not something I’m interested in at all

Boston is worse off short and long term with that deal.

Oh forgot he was the Hart trophy frontrunner...

You think offering Pastrnak 1 for 1 would get him? He does have an astounding 11 points thru 26 games on the 3rd line of a team at the bottom of their division so might be tough...

Must of missed my sarcasm. So sorry.

Did I ever say he was f'ing Pastrnak?

No... I especially did NOT.

I'm merely pointing out that he's hardly been garbage. But I guess, you have to be Pastrnak before you're not.

But hey, a 35 year old Maroon has about as many points through as many games as DeBrusk, a rookie in Poitras, and Heinen. With less TOI to boot.

Guess they must be garbage too, then? Right?

I think that getting another is going to be essential given both the poor performance of the tandem and the notoriously shaky health of Father Finn. I do agree that Orlov has gotten much better recently and I think Chatty has been great long term partner for Skjei

Orlov hasn’t been atrocious. While he struggled with TDA, he has been very good away from TDA. He has settled in nicely

If we're gonna try and snag a LHD from Carolina I'd rather have it be Skjei

Would rather package Ullmark with other assets to take a swing at Necas
