If the Kovalenko continues to non perform, that's a pretty fair trade if the Canucks are "going for it". Nice thought on the trade.

These comments are confusing lol. The Canucks aren't even in this trade proposal. Also, why are people sleeping on Kovalenko? Pretty sure he's point per game in the KHL right now. Avs just signed him this summer. I don't think they'll trade him when he's penciled in as the 3RW when the KHL season ends. And he's having a good season there. Pretty sure Kovalenko would get the conversation started lol. Maybe people were thinking of vladislav kamenev?

Wrong team. Kuzmenko plays for the Canucks. Kovalenko is an Avs prospect that has been tearing it up in the KHL. He'll be joining the Avs as soon as the KHL season ends.

Avs would absolutely not do this. Kovalenko is the most important forward on his KHL team:

26 points in 24 games (1st in PPG)
18:34 TOI per-game (1st), 1:50 shorthanded (2nd)
70 hits (1st), 16 takeaways (1st)

Guy is immediately joining the Avs roster after the conclusion of the KHL season and will be a longer term piece for Colorado. Absolutely not on the table for a rental.

If he keeps performing and stays healthy he should net at least a late first or equivalent. Just look at past rentals of his caliber and what the return was.

Not saying he gets kovalenko btw. I won’t pretend to know the value of a guy playing in Russia, pretty sure NHL GMs don’t even know.

Why?! More KHL stars that try to make the jump to the NHL fail than succeed, why trade for the next potential failure? Who remembers the hype on Gusev? He was a ppg+ player in the KHL and came over and absolutely sucked, Kovalenko has Gusev written all over him.

he had 44 points in 60 games in his first season. He was also a 5'8 winger who joined when he was 26/27, not 24/25.

I know he did but in the following did bupkiss (10 points in 31 games) and 44 points in 66 games is nothing to write home about considering guys like Drouin put up 50 on occasion. My point is though that I wouldn't trade for and Russian coming from the KHL unless they were like Ovi or Michkov and can't miss, the risk of their games not translating far outweighs the price to acquire them. If Kovalenko hits good on the Avs but it took him 5 KHL seasons and 3 teams to hit the ppg mark suggesting it was his teammates that got him to that mark more than his own skill. I am not saying he won't make it, just that the odds are stacked heavily against him and for that reason I would pass.

Keeps performing? His play has already dropped off. He has 3pts in his last 13 games and is getting crushed in shot metrics.

I don’t think you know what you’re talking about.

Gusev was a high skill, offensive only guy. It didn’t translate to the NHL. Sometimes you get Kaprisov, sometimes you get Gusev.

Kovalenko is a two way player who is physical and plays heavy PK minutes. His game is focused on aggressive forechecking and has some offensive upside. He is a point per game, but not in the same way as a Gusev did.

Evaluating Euros coming over to the NHL is always a crapshoot. For all we know, he could bust. But you clearly are thinking about a different player if you’re comparing this dude to Drouin and Gusev.

TBH, I don't know the player, I am generalizing Russian players based on how few of their games actually translate to the NHL, that is all. I did say he could work out but he was drafted nearly 7 years ago, played 5 full KHL seasons for 3 different KHL teams before he hit a ppg last year, maybe he is just a really late bloomer or maybe he is being propped up by his new teammates, I don't know and really don't care cause IMO it's just too big of a risk going after Russian players who were not clear-cut top-end talent. Sorry, I know that's heavily biased and I did say it was just my opinion on the risks outweighed the price to acquire him.

He has a lot more in common with Nichushkin than Gusev. Not the size of Nuke (he's 5'10", 190 so okay but not a big guy although he plays physically) but the skillset and style; his game has a much higher chance of translating than someone like Gusev.

Good for you, BTW I never compared him to Gusev, I said that given the odds of how many Russians fail to make the NHL he could become the next failed attempt, remember how hyped up Gusev was. However since you think I comped them here is a comp for you Kovalenko took 5 years and 3 teams to hit more than 30 points in the KHL, Gusev took 5 years and 2 KHL teams to hit 30 points in the KHL, both were really late round draft picks not that that says they won't be stars but they were both passed over multiple times by every team including the ones that drafted them. I don't wish I'll on any player but I also don't like trading good assets for players drafted 5 years ago and are just breaking out with their 3rd pro team. I hope he does come over and does make the league and has a good long career. I just don't want to give up good nhl players like Monahan for someone who has thedeck stacked against them even more than a prospect does.
