Description
Let's say Devils get to Conference final before being eliminated by Toronto or Boston. Let's try to build a sustainable future contender. Kent Johnson is on the outs in Columbus. Let's reunite him with his former Michigan teammate and friend Luke Hughes and eventually Seamus Casey. This gives us an absolutely insane top 6 for next year and the long-term 5-6 year cup window. We had to give up the first rounder to the Sharks to complete the Meier deal (the condition is that if we make the ECF this year or last year the 2nd becomes a 1st), but we will instead have a 2nd rounder. We can send a 2nd rounder in 2024 and a 3rd in 2025 along with the rights to Arseni Gritsyuk and maybe another B- prospect that can't crack our roster in Graeme Clarke. I will say the trade becomes much easier if we get knocked out by New York or Carolina as then Columbus would probably take a pick in the mid-20s plus Gritsyuk for him. EDIT: Trade updated because for some reason it didn't include Gritsyuk and Clarke in the initial post and I had Kent Johnson making 16 mill cause i added an extra zero

Mercer's slower start allows us to get a bit of a bargain on his next contract, with maybe a 5-6 million, 7 or 8 year contract being the absolute ceiling. We probably have enough cap room left over after all this to make an upgrade to the last D spot or a slight upgrade over Vanecek in goal. Still think between Schmid and Daws we'll be good enough in the future to have a shot so we don't need to go crazy/overboard on a goalie add.

It’s going to cost more than that to get him and he would have the same problem with the Devils buried on the center depth chart

The devils already built that contender. Now you just wait, keep the cap in order by avoiding any more bad contracts (looking at you Palat), convince your guys to take discounts to stay, and fill holes with shrewd trades like we already have with Toffoli, Haula, Marino and Siegs

The way it's looking right now the devils already have 5 solid top 9 C options with how Mcleod has looked.
Hughes+Nico obviously

Haula will always be capable no matter where you slot him in the middle 6, mercer again should be a more than capable 3C at the least if not slid in as a top 6 winger, and McLeods showing some more offensive flash this year that could lead him to being a strong 2 way 2C at this rate.

I think he'd be pretty dynamic playing on one of the top 2 wings. I think It'll probably cost at least a 1st and a 3rd plus the prospects to get him, but in this scenario, the Devils likely wouldn't have a 1st available this year. Maybe a 1st next year and a 2nd this year plus a good prospect in Gritsyuk who can step in now for Columbus is enough, I don't know

It’s clear either he or Columbus don’t want him on the wing they want him at center so I don’t see how moving him to the wing would make sense that’s like a last ditch effort you do for a center

Well the reason he hasn't stuck in Columbus is that they want him to play center and he's not ready to be a top 6 center. We have no such need with Hughes and Hischier and in fact, have plenty of other center capable players. So we can just let him cook on the wing and be super creative next to Jack or Nico. No matter how you pair up the top 6 here, it would be incredibly dynamic, and it strengthens our bottom 6 to have Mercer and Haula there.

I don't think it would be Luke Hughes, Dawson Mercer, or Nemec either

I will say though that there's a case to be made that the Devils would be better suited trading Dawson Mercer (who is about to be much more expensive but is a much more capable young center) for Kent Johnson, who seems to be a more natural play driver, will be cheaper, but is less reliable in the D-zone.

If something around that worked out, you'd just slide Holtz up to the 3rd line and add a bottom 6 two way winger with some size in his place with the cap space that is freed up.

I think it could be mercer, if yall really wanted KJ. If we moved KJ it would be more of a hockey trade for a similar level of player, or a player with similar potential. we wouldnt want a package of picks and ok prospects.

No point moving mercer out in a lateral move for NJD. Not good for morale or chemistry of the team

I definitely think there's a case KJ is worth Mercer. Given their respective likely contract situations. I love Dawgson, but players as dynamic as KJ do not grow on trees. You could probably slot a Nolan Foote or Gritsyuk in on the 3rd line and not miss much.

Trading mercer for KJ would be making a trade for the sake of making a trade. No point

I don't think Mercer for KJ is a lateral move at all by the way. I think those are two entirely different types of player. Might not make sense for the Devils to do a trade like that, but Dawson Mercer is not a play driver. He's a 2-way secondary scorer and support forward.

Anyway I think this is at least a somewhat interesting idea. I don't really get why Columbus who isn't going anywhere this year is really insisting on Patrik Laine 2C behind Fantilli and isn't just letting KJ cook.

I think the Devils should look for ways to turn future prospects/picks into assets that are a closer to being full time players. They've found late gems enough that I think they'll be able to continue to do that while cracking their window wide open.

Kent Johnson would be awesome, but there is no reason Columbus trades him for collection of lesser pieces…even if sum-if-the-parts has more value.

The only realistic move would probably a deal around Mercer, if CBJ viewed him as a center and as future top-6 center for them. But don’t see the incentive from NJD perspective unless Mercer contract becomes too much or there is another piece involved.

Laine is hurt and isnt practicing yet due to the dirty hit on him. KJ has been absolutely terrible this season. He cant keep up with the play, is getting bullied off the puck constantly, and is just making mistakes/turnovers. he needs some time in the AHL to get his game right. The only people that dont understand this move are people who dont watch our games, cause if you did it would be obvious why. KJ also is not a center.

To the eye, he hasn’t played poorly really…for a young player, he is fairly consistent. But the points seem to come in bunches. Only thing I could think of…they did start talking extension towards end of off-season. So maybe that is a factor. But he looks fine.

Also…if all demotees are fair game, I’d go for Matt Coronato over Kent Johnson
