Looking ahead with Reinbacher
Of all the Holtz for Anderson offers I've read on Capfriendly over the past 4 years (and oh god there have been a lot), I think this one is the one that made me want to die the least, so kudos for that. But the Devils still do not want Josh Anderson.

I really don't think this is true at all. Quinn was consistently mocked in the 10-12 range that year. I have a hard time believing they would've passed on Holtz at 8 if he was there.

Full Markstrom Cap Hit
Two million too light on Mercer, but also 2 million too expensive on Zadorov so we'll all it a wash. the Jets 2nd and Holtz for Markstrom seems more likely than a 3rd. I have no interest in Armia but I'd be pleased with Trenin at 3 million.

Tarasenko is not a comp for literally any winger traded this week. He had a NMC, his family lives in southern Florida, and he would only go there. The fact that Ottawa even got 2 mid round draft picks considering that is fairly impressive. They had less than no leverage.

You have to remember that Hughes is due for an extension on July 1 that will kick in not next year, but the year after (2025-2026) that will pay him north of 8 million a season, a la Owen Power. Nemec's ELC is burned later, but he's still going to get about that on July 1 2026, which will kick in during the 2027-2028 season. The window is winning at least one cup before Nemec costs them 8+ million (2026-2027)

Oh you were referring to Hanifin. Yeah I don't think Hanifin makes any sense for the Devils with the cost of Nemec and Hughes scheduled to rise considerably in the next 3 years.

You don't have to extend him at all. He's under contract for 6ish mill for the next 3 years. That's your cup window while Nemec/Hughes/Hischier are all cheap. He's likely to be the best goalie you can acquire for this 3 year window.

The Flames would be pretty silly not to consider trades for Markstrom IMO. They're not going to contend in the West in the 3 years remaining on his contract. Why have a goalie making you better (but not good enough to make the playoffs) so that you miss out on top lottery odds. You want your goalie to be as bad as possible. It's the same issue the devils had with the last 3 years of healthy Schneider.

What you want and what you get are two separate things. I think it's fine to quibble about who the second prospect is (I don't think Vukojevic is anything but maybe a Topias Vilen or Ethan Edwards is slightly more intriguing), but a 3rd rounder and a B prospect is a reasonable price for the kind of rental Henrique represents.
Also I think the Devils are the rare team that doesn't need to do retention either on him. but that's another question. They already have big salary outlays this season and probably wouldn't be squeamish about taking on a few million more that the Ducks are probably happy not to have to pay.

Feels like a slightly high price for Tanev, but I like both of these ideas conceptually. I'd maybe want to see some additional depth scoring come in. Or maybe Bahl, a conditional 1st (if we don't reach the conference finals it's a 1st this year-top 5 lottery protected-, if we do it's a 1st next year since this year's conveys to the Sharks) and a 2nd for Tanev and Markstrom (with a little retained - maybe a million).
I think getting Henrique to fill McLeod's minutes once Jack gets back, getting Tanev, as a high class rental, and taking a swing at the goalie for the Cup-contender team (likely next year) makes sense.
I would love a short term (2 year, around 4 AAV) extension with Tanev to get us through the next few years.
Long-term I see the D shaking out like:
Hamilton Siegs
Luke Marino
Tanev Nemec
with Casey eventually pairing well with Nemec I think as he grows into his own.
For what it's worth I think Miller has been extremely good in 3rd pair minutes and I would be thrilled to trade Bahl in the goalie upgrade package and just extend Miller short term as a 6th/7th D.

I truly don't get why dgibb derails every conversation about a goalie trade and always devolves it into "the Devils should give up peanuts and get a Vezina trophy winner or they could just sign a guy off the street."
It can be true that you can get lucky and get a great goalie in free agency or via a very cheap trade. But it's also true that the Devils will have to give up assets for legitimate Vezina candidate goalies. I was banging the drum for Connor Hellebuyck, cost be damned, this summer, and he currently has the highest GSaX of all goalies, and would have the Devils in the President's Trophy hunt if they had traded for him.
At some point you do have to take a stab. And I think Ullmark is worth this amount of outlay

You're not getting a 1st if you traded Holtz on his own. I think of this as essentially two 2nd round picks. They won't have the cap to sign Holtz to the extension he's due in 2025 anyway. May as well sell while he still has some name recognition now and people can dream on a change of scenery, instead of in a year+ when he remains on our 3rd/4th line and scoring 25 points.

In what world is a disappointing former 1st rounder who can't crack the top 6 more valuable than the reigning Vezina winner to a team that is currently a goalie away from a Stanley Cup?
It's fair to argue that Ullmark with only 1 year left is a bit worrisome, but that's the only reason he's even possibly on the block. Goalies this good don't usually shake loose, as we've discovered from the months of speculation now about the Devils trading for middling ones.

I don't really see how it's that awful of value. Holtz is being pushed out of our top 6 anyway by the guys we currently have signed/prioritized here. We make a massive improvement in goal, and don't even give up a first round pick to do so.
Holtz has been one of our worst forward this year by most advanced metrics. You can blame his linemates all you want (I don't think playing with Bastian or Tierney has particularly helped him) but he hasn't clearly shown he deserves a top 6 role either.
I think this is by far a better plan than trading for Jake Allen (not an improvement) or John Gibson (albatross contract that still for some reason everyone agrees will cost us a 1st round pick to take).

That’s two yeses from Boston fans! Think there’s something to this for sure. It seems possibly overly generous but that usually means it’s closer to being fair than whatever is usually posted here. I think the Devils are going to be in a tricky spot with Luke’s number coming in so high and it will be harder and harder for us to fill out our bottom 6

Need some retention on that Markstrom contract if we’re gonna give up a 1st, otherwise the price of getting Markstrom’s full 24 million off the books for the Flames is a “free” Tanev . Even 1.5-2 million makes it more palatable as he moves into his mid 30s.
I also don’t think that Calgary wants to roster Vitek the next two years so maybe this becomes a 3 team trade with Carolina, Detroit, or Buffalo(?) joining in to take Vitek with retention by the Devils or Flames

I wrote in the description what the two scenarios are. We don’t currently have our 1st guaranteed this year, if we had our first it would be in the deal. But no there’s definitely a third scenario besides the two at the end of your post: John Gibson is a good goalie, past his prime in which he was elite, who is a significant upgrade over what the Devils currently have (hence the draft picks)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>The retention is what makes Gibson not a cap dump</div></div>
Yeah, any less retention than 1.4 million to put him at around 5 million makes him an underwater asset. He wouldn't get anywhere in the ballpark of 4 yr/5 AAV on the open market after 3 years of sub .900 SV% and a grand total of 1.2 GSaX in the first 20 starts this year (22nd among all goalies). The value is that he is a perfectly fine, above average starting goalie. You're not trading a front-line, Vezina candidate starter.
The Ducks would also have to retain 2.9 million to send Henrique to literally any other team. Not having to retain that salary to send him to the Devils gets them halfway to the amount of retained money on Gibson right there.
Like I said I think a 1st or two 2nds is probably a best case scenario for Gibson. Maybe a B-minus prospect like Graeme Clarke or Nolan Foote they can dream on is also in there. I don't know.
Either way, it's unlikely they're going to be able to trade Gibson without retaining some of that money.
