This trade seems strange on the surface because both players were waived recently, so the teams trading for them now could have had them for nothing. Why then did they wait until they had to give up something to get them? I believe the reason is that if you claim a player on waivers, you have to keep him on your NHL roster, and neither team wanted to commit to that. By waiting until they've cleared waivers, they can leave them in the minors until they need to call them up. Jones is probably closer to being an NHL player than Burke, but neither team is really giving up anything of value. It's depth at one position for depth at a different position.
