Description
These are the type of moves I would make if I were Philly.

Laughton, Hart and Konecny should be moved (even with retention), if they are able to get packages like this.

Philly would be setting themselves up very nicely for the future.

Thoughts?

Absolutely not from the Sabres

Hart has had 3 down years in a row,

Carter Shart isn’t worth half of that. Buffalo is not burying Devon Levi behind him just because in this scenario they grossly overpaid to get him.

Agreed. Carolina loses nothing from their roster and get a star forward at very low cap hit for 2 years. Carolina are already stanley cup contenders. I think Nikishin will need to be added, otherwise Philly holds off and makes this deal with another team. Carolina doesn't have a ton of high value prospects.

I think the Ottawa trade is a bit adventurous. I don't think Laughton is quite what they are looking for at that cost. In theory, they could probably put that package together and get someone around the same age and caliber of Pinto (see Newhook trade) rather than a middle-sixer who is approaching the age curve.

Would love to see that return from Carolina, but with their defense core about the age of 30 and no player under contract through 2025-26, I think they'd like to keep their top prospect Nikishin to either develop or go after a bigger fish (Clayton Keller perhaps).

I think the Hart trade is fine in value, personally not super high on UPL and Buffalo probably wants to roll the dice on Levi and potentially use Ostlund + 1st to upgrade on a different position. Wouldn't mind the return on that one. The other trades are basic rentals

I think Carolina would be more inclined to trade Morrow. They don’t realise he is better than Nikishin

I made the Ottawa side of this trade here - https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/762226?post_id=4421192 - Ottawa looks seriously good with Laughton. He is a middle 6 guy but he is exactly the type of guy they need. I like it for both teams.

I doubt Keller is available. Konecny at 2.75m cap for 2 years would be a lot. Carolina has virtually no high end prospects, I get that, but they currently have the best d core (maybe ever constructed? Am I crazy in saying that?). I think this deal makes a lot of sense for both teams. Carolina needs to go all in. They are extremely good.

UPL has no value in this trade in my mind. it was more goalie in vs goalie out. And fair. I can see Buffalo rejecting this trade. They have the best goalie prospect in the world in Levi, so I can see why they don't do this. Hart for 2 years until Levi is 100% ready could be a good play though.

0 chance Nikishin is included in a deal for TK. I wouldn’t even trade Nikishin for TK straight up. The dude looks too good.

Its worth considering. The Canes don’t pay for retention unless they are forced to. We should have 6 million equivalent in space at the deadline.

He actually had an up year last season. That would still be an overpay for Buffalo though. UPL is sikioar value, and even then I can't see Buff doing a 1 for 1.

An “up year” compared to the season before
But not compared to his first 2 years, when he was actually decent

He was good this season. Yeah numbers wise not so much but he single handedly kept games alive for the miserable Flyers. Especially given that they had arguably the wrost defense in the game. Those numbers would boost on a team with competitive defense.

An argument I’d be more apt to believe if his previous 2 seasons had better numbers

I wouldn’t give up Ostlund, or a 1st, in a deal for Hart
Maybe something like UPL & a 2nd- MAYBE

But then again, I’d prefer the Sabres go in a different direction if trading for a goalie. I’m not a big fan of Hart

Well yeah I said this trade was an overpayment. I also said I doubt Buffalo would do it since UPL had similar stats. I'm not trying to convince you Hart will win the Vezina next year if on a contender, I'm just saying that his numbers aren't actually too bad for the team he was on.

Imagine a trade like this goes on in real life. for Scott Laughton, the guy who is worse than Joseph defensively, on the PK and with a lower scoring rate

I get it, it’s the same argument Ducks fans make with Gibson
The problem with the argument is that the goalie is part of that “bad team”
An important part

Is the goalie bad bc of the team in from of him,
or is the team bad bc of the goalie behind them??
Usually, it’s a combo of both

I don't think the retained salary on TK makes much a of a difference. Teams would rather send money out versus getting a salary retained. Carolina has a very strong cap sheet and the marginal benefit of an additional 2-2.5M isn't worth the additional cost of getting him down there. Carolina can still go all in without having to completely mortgage their future for someone who'd probably be 4th best forward last year.

Ottawa isn't going to pay the price of acquiring high end talent for someone they already have. Joseph and Laughton are pretty much the same player, minus some intangibles, which even then is pretty subjective valuation.

Usually, but having multiple 40+ save games doesn't usually happen for bad goalies on good teams and vice versa. In the end its a team game and everyone contributes to the wins and losses, but that also means everyone's stats are reflective of the team too.
