Note: we know that Suter would not accept a trade to Calgary, but maybe he'd accept being traded to Detroit immediately after this trade is in the books - somewhat similar as to what Pens did with Petry.

2023 Offseason deal

Think of this as a 3-way between Calgary, Dallas and Detroit. DAL pays the picks to make this 3 D swap happen - DAL gets the RHD they've been targeting, CGY adds a ok-ish bottom-4 guy, and DET adds a veteran they probably like (based on their most recent acquisitions), and get a pick for their troubles too.

Detroit wanted Suter, he chose MIN. They don’t need or want him now as opposed to the guy that was just re-signed.

Been there done that with Gilbert and Foudy and the picks is an overpay for Roslovic even retained, would prefer to keep Foudy and give him a shot. Take Gilbert and MacDermid out, throw in a lesser prospect than Foudy and it would be worth considering.

Who knows. The way DET has been acquiring meh D-men recently is just bonkers to me, Suter would be great addition to that pile. And Detroit would probably count as one of the three teams Suter might accept being traded to - as a Stars fan who wants to get rid of him I'm going to abuse and exhaust this possibility to its very end lol

Would like Foudy to be added there given I also got the other Foudy - what should change for Foudy to remain in the trade

The 2nd would have to be removed honestly, COL is pretty high on Foudy and his skill set is such a good fit, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is given the shot to fill the open 3rd line spot.

Would Foudy+lower pick like 3rd or 4th suffice then?

If I’m Dallas and I’m trading a first for Tanev, at minimum he has to come at 50% retained to give better cap room. As a rebuilding team, Calgary shouldn’t have to worry about the money nor the retention slot as the contract finishes in one year.

Normally I'd agree, but if that means we get rid of Suter I'm not taking chances. Consider us paying for dumping him here too.

That’s what the second is here for (as displayed in the trade).

Granted we don’t know what it’d cost to dump him hypothetically, could be low as it could be astronomically high.

CBJ trade is way more quantity than quality. The 1st is the only thing with SIGNIFICANT value, with Boqvist and the 2nd holding a fair bit as well, but there's gotta be more substance to get Lindholm and Hanifin.

Aside from that, CBJ really don't need or want Vladar, nor Hanifin at this point. I was big on pushing for Hanifin earlier in the offseason, but that went out the window once they gave a 1st for Provorov, who'd get bumped down the the 3rd pair if this happened.

I think there is way too much substance in that Columbus trade. I bet the only thing they are interested in is Lindholm after their offseason. He would have to come at a reasonable dollar amount as well but he could be a nice fit reuniting with Johnny.
I personally think the best for Hanifin is Florida, but I don't know if they would be willing to give up the assets to acquire him. Samoskevich would be a great pick up for Calgary if they were willing to trade him for Hanifin or maybe a deal with Reinhart. Even then the Panthers just signed most of their left side so I don't see them instantly trading them unless they felt Forsling. Most other teams are pretty set on their top 4, aren't looking to add cause they are rebuilding or don't have the cap space/ assets for Hanifin.
Vladar I don't think holds any value to any team.
I think the only way Detroit considers something like that now is if it's Chiarot going the other way. Maatta was just extended, played very well and is liked in Detroit. I wouldn't support trading him for anything other than a huge win of a deal. Suter and Petry could be the oldest pairing in the NHL though lol. For value aspect, taking on Suter alone probably takes the second. If you look at the Petry trade, trade clause likely only waiving for Detroit, 35 and two years left. We paid a late fourth and a player who was expected to play in Europe this season for Petry at 2.3M to fill a position we actually had some what vacant. There is no vacant position, unless you create one by adding it to your trade, even then still 4 LHD on the roster. Full NMC so he decides where to go. Would probably cost more with Maatta since there is no desire to move him but could maybe save the pick and take Chiarot?

I said alot more here than I was planning. I guess that's what happens when you do this half asleep in bed.

Again, nope. Exhaust it all you want, for every reason under the sun there is absolutely zero benefit, reason, or rationale that Suter comes to Detroit.

Oh I absolutely agree - he's not strengthening to any team whatsoever. Consider that a 7th D swap for you, and you get a pick for your troubles.

Honestly both Foudy brothers play the exact same game. I bet it would be hard to fit both in a lineup. Would be fun though.

I’d probably say yes to this from COL’s POV, but would try to downgrade Foudy or the 2nd.

Center is the strongest position for the Sabres right now, Tage Cozens, Mitts, Krebs, and Jost make up an already very strong center group, with Kulich, Savoie, Ostlund and Wahlberg being quality prospects on the way. We have the cap space for Markstrom without retention, and between that and our current center group, spending a first for a guy that would be competing for 3C doesn’t make sense.

You've just exposed your ignorance of what's going on in Detroit.

Detroit have the best prospect pipeline in the entire league on LD with Edvinsson, Johansson, Wallinder, and others but they are bereft of RD prospects that are close to being ready. That is the reason for Yzerman signing stopgap players that are RD (or capable of playing that position). We now have 7 competent NHL defenders that are signed to deals that fit very well with the expected timeframe in which our prospects are expected to mature.

Detroit is not going to trade away Määttä for a 38 year old player. Määttä will be needed the next couple of years as 3rd pair or 7th D depending how quickly Edvinsson and Johansson develop. Ghost will be traded at the deadline and one of those two will get the nod to replace him. On the right side we have Petry signed for two years and Holl for three, that is the time it will take for Sandin Pellikka, Tuomisto, and Gibson to develop into players that can replace them.

The Detroit defense is very well crafted considering what talent we have in our prospect pool and the time it will take for them to become ready to step up.

Exposed my ignorance of Detroit's defense...sure man, whatever floats your boat.

It's a fairly accurate statement that DET has been adding meh D-man for a good while now, to the point they have to place a $3M dollar player as a healthy scratch, and have no room at all for any of the youths you mentioned unless injuries happen.

You're reading too much into this trade. It's a 7th D swap between Suter and Määttä, neither one is a lock to make to the lineup. DET gets a 2nd for taking in a worse player, although they'd play the same role. That trade wouldn't change anything for their core.
