I think that Anaheim would much prefer to have Troy Terry for 6 or 7 seasons at under $8 million per than Mitch Marner for two seasons at almost $11 million, never mind the other assets. Marner's current contract expires just as Anaheim's window of relevance is expected to open.

Plz understand how cap space works and NTC work too. Explain why the devils want Terry when they have no cap and have to resign Bahl still and Next yr season have to resign mercer,Schmid and possibly Toff if he has a good season with the devs, and oh Hughes in 2yrs. So this was a panic trade with no logic behind anything.

Aight have you? Marner's moodd directly impacts on how the team plays. Look at every 60 goal scorer they all had an elite playmaker (besides McDavid since he's just that guy) Ovi had Backstrom And Stamkos had St. Louis. Marner is directly tied to the leafs success. If you wanna make deep playoff runs then you need to keep Marner. He had an amazing season last yeara and he is the most consistant player on the leafs. There's no way that the leafs do as well as they did last year without Marner. He is directly tied to the teams success as I said

If the Rangers went to the Leafs and said, Zibby for Marner? Or the Isles went Barzal for Marner etc.The Leafs would 100% say yes and most people here would say it's good for the Leafs, BC Marner doesn't really do anything that much better than what he's being paid to do... Part of the Leafs issue is their locker room and identity, Marner doesn't help when he avoids hits, makes soft plays and has that sense of entitlement that he doesn't need to do the hard things and only make those highlight reel plays... Look at the playoffs, where the small things make the biggest difference, that's where Marner disappears

Matthews creates his own goals... unlike Ovi, Stammer... McDavid (who had Draisaitl on the PP BTW, where 21 of his 65 goals were scored), admitted to copying Matthews way of findings goals via shot and shot creation to this year's success... Matthews scored 40 on 1 wrist without playing w Marner... I think he and the Leafs are fine with moving Marner for another guy to actually defend and make Matthews' job easier

In short, moving Maner for a guy(s) who'll do what it takes to win is what the Leafs are missing

I agree that If it was a trade for a guy that is also a playmaker it would very much go through and wouldn't affect the leafs in a negative or a positive way but trading away any of the core 4 is not the best idea cus you want a locker room with friends obviously Nylander might have to be gone because of him wanting too much but tradeing any of them is hard. Matthews does not create his own goals he uses Marner as a tool to help him create them and avoiding hits is not something anyone should be completely against. Yes I know it can be seen as soft and that at times it's the right play but there is nothing wrong with trying to avoid getting injured but lets put that asside. The playoffs this year he did better than Matthews did. And have you seen the lines? Marner is always on the PK cus he can be good on the PK.

The comps above were guys making less than Marner... Means better use of cap and less likely Nylander goes...

Matthews does create his chances... Look up any of his goals... He also has a goals per game percentage better than OVI over their respective careers...

After game 2 of R1, Marner had 1 goal in 8 games, that's not good enough... He also only had 18 hits in 11 games in the playoffs, that's not good enough

As for Marner playing PK, playing PK doesn't mean you're good at defence, look at McDavid and Draisaitl, they both play PK, not very good at defence

Out- Marner, Jarnkrok, Lafferty and Timmins
In- Fowler, Garland, 1-1st, 2-2nd, 2-4th.
The leafs lose their best all round player and only guy on the #1 unit in every situation. 2 bottom 6 guys who play the PK and a 7th d-man in limited play has produced offensively.
They add Garland a overpaid winger that has been linked to trade rumors for a while with no deals made. Fowler is a LD that seems to be more offensive than defensive which the leafs don't need and has little to none physical play. Oh forgot, Marner has a NTC that has kicked in.
