Some ideas to improve defensively and up scoring
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>He's on that line as a support piece. Fore checking, puck digging, secondary faceoff, defensive improvement, etc. I get where you're coming from, but I would rather spread the talent out over 3 lines. I could have put Killorn there but between him and Zegras the lack of foot speed on that line would get caved in. Jones could go there too, but I think Zegras and Terry are enough offense to carry the line.
Vatrano could also go there but I decided to keep that line together.</div></div>
I hear you and it’s totally well thought out. I’m just fully anti Lunde anywhere in the top 6 (possibly 9) at this point. I think he’ll hold that line back despite having a decent motor. Skill wise he’s just a full step step behind those two linemates where I feel like anytime we have the puck he’s going to look lost. If he manages to be in the right spot, he’s gonna find a way to hit their netminder square
Would love for him to prove me wrong, but it just hasn’t been there. These are all just coaching decisions though. The team itself here 👌🏼

Would prefer to just swing for the fences on one of the elite RWs about to hit the market. We have the cap space, but losing Z is a huge blow (see our record this season before/after he returned from injury, despite losing some key players at the deadline).
I’m cool to overpay Pesce to lure him here on a shorter term deal as well
I think you completely forgot Zellweger though. He looks fantastic, definitely earned a full time spot in ANA next year

I like pretty much everything here. The one thing I’m totally opposed to is Lundestrom in the top 6. He just has not shown an ability to produce or facilitate offense. He’s chalked up as a 4th liner in my book at this point. (We need to stop spending late 1st rd picks on guys we hope to be a 3rd liner.. I.e Gaucher as well)
If you shift Z to 2LW,, bump up McT to 2C, Kampf to 3C, and Lunde to 4C that’d be more my preference

Easy decisions
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Some interesting, outside-the-usual-box thinking here. I commend you for your imagination.
Personally, I'd re-sign RFAs Max Jones and Isac Lundestrom, but Stenlund is a nice idea. (If not re-signed, the RFAs have some modest trade value.) I'm not a fan of the Fowler-Pageau part of the Zegras deal, though.
I wouldn't be willing to commit to Jackson LaCombe that long-term just yet.
Bottom line: I think that all of these ideas have some merit. I don't think any of them can be rejected out of hand as unrealistic.</div></div>
Also commend the creative thinking (another MTL Zegras trade for multiple late firsts is 🤮). That said, a few thoughts:
JPG will be expiring when ANA hits their compete window, that’s not attractive. Pulock is solid, but he’ll be 32/33 when we’re competing as well. If we move Z it really only makes sense to do so for a similarly aged player at a position of need should we draft Lindstrom (making a LW expendable). A 1st and 2nd is nice value, but ANA needs young impact players as they try to exit the rebuild. If feels like this hits the two ends of the spectrum (older vets and then picks) but not the sweet spot for ANA in the middle. A Dobson trade for Zegras+ if we draft Lindstrom would be great, but I don’t think NYI would be interested. All of this moot if we can just snag Levshunov. Zero issues with Zegras’ defensive efforts since he returned from injury, and our offensive woes are just as bad as our defense, and he’s our best and most creative producer on offense
Vaak was just scratched for the likes of a Lindstrom/Lageson pairing. Unlikely for a 2 year deal, but I personally like his game
Lacombe is not at all proven enough for $4.5M or that term. I personally think he should be a trade chip this offseason
I’m cool letting Jones go, Lunde is worth a 4C spot, but also okay letting him go as well
Personally prefer overpaying Stammer for 2 years vs tying up Rein for 7, but would still totally take it

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GeneralLandro</b></div><div>You think we are trading a likely top 3 pick a pick in the 20s a good 3rd pair defenseman and a 37 goal scorer making less than $3,700,000 for Brady?? Insanity
I’d love to trade for him but that’s wild</div></div>
It may be off, but I actually don’t think it’s crazy far off. Vaak got benched last night for the likes of Lindstrom and Lageson
Vatrano is an expiring UFA (~mid-late first value)
EDM pick likely to be pretty late
Then the high value top 5 pick
Brady’s a stud, and would be adored by Verbeek. I think the 2 issues are:
(1) We’re flush with LWs so someone else would need to go that isn’t included here. It’s not going to be Gauthier, which leaves Zegras who I see zero reason to trade. He’s been awesome since returning
(2) With 4 years left, he’ll be an approaching UFA right when we’ll be in our compete window
Love Brady, and if OTT valued Z highly for there to be a swap there that made sense, maybe. But otherwise I think ANA’s focus should be on RW and RD

Not an ounce of interest in that deal for ANA. Ducks aren’t entering into a rebuild, they’re trying to exit one. You don’t trade your 23 year old, best offensive player for futures in those circumstances. Especially not a bunch of late round ‘meh’ that would be lucky to reel in a single player to play top 6 at the NHL level

You did way too much here.
Vatrano will stay until the deadline
ANA isn’t retaining $3M on Gibson, nor taking on Campbell
Same for Lehner
Lacombe, Lundestrom, and Regenda could be expendable, but that’s not the right return to target (don’t need more LW, and a 4LW isnt addressing a need)
Hronek would be nice, but the quantity approach vs quality likely doesn’t get it done
Reinhart alone, sure (I’d prefer stammer if we can pull it). Not Rein and Guentzel. Ducks have a ton of guys coming off ELCs in the next 2 years, that’ll put us in a terrible spot to be able to keep them around

Gibsons Value
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>The problem with that argument is the backups are always getting the easier assignments, hence the improved stat lines.</div></div>
That’s not really true.. Gibby misses games every year for injuries and the backups have filled in really nicely. I think we need to accept what Gibby is. A solid starter for the 1st half of the season who can’t stay healthy and falls off during the 2nd half on a contract befitting the stats he hasn’t managed to put up across an entire season for years now
If we move Gibby we have to retain, and the team taking him needs to have a 1B because he’s now just a 1A due to the need to manage his workload if you want to be able to use him at all come playoffs.
All that said, with a competitive team in front of him and a reasonable workload, I genuinely think he can 1A a Stanley cup caliber team. When he’s healthy and rested he puts up some insane performances. There are a number of our wins this year that sit squarely on his shoulders
Value? Super hard to judge. But with retention it’d have to be at least one enticing piece because otherwise Verbeek will just keep him to mentor Dosty. We don’t have cap issues rn and he’s a leader on ANA

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>Dvorak is a very unappetizing player for a team looking to hit the cap floor because his real salary owed is much higher than his cap hit. Those kind of bottom feeding teams are trying to cut payroll and take on older players who have front loaded contracts, not back loaded like Dvorak.
That's complicated by the fact that he's not good enough to be a 2C and too highly paid to be a 3C.</div></div>
Not to mention getting to the cap floor is almost never something teams need help doing. I think you’re pretty stuck with him unless you up the pick value

Maaaybe ANA considers something like this if they miss out on Lev and take Lindstrom. But even still I feel like they’d just keep Z. If they ended up with Lindstrom I could see them smashing a Foerster + Bonk return. We’d probably have to add a bit more though

This. He’s been a point-per-game C since returning, and still reportedly isn’t 100% with the ankle. I totally think Leonard would be a discussion-worthy trade for Zegras, especially with Cutter here. But I’m not at all convinced ANA would pull trigger on it, and really don’t picture WAS wanting to at all

I agree Palat is a cap dump, but to suggest that Anaheim wouldn't take him+1st for free when they gave 6.4 mill to what is, in my opinion, a worse, older version of Palat.</div></div>
I think this is the third time I’m saying it. ANA already paid the $6.4M for a veteran winger. To assume they’d add a second makes no sense when they already have out one rich contract and now have zero spots in their top 9. Even then, if you asked Verbeek how much production he expected to get out of that $6.4M, I can guarantee you it was the over on what we got. With Palat, it’s all but guaranteed to be the under
There’s almost nothing that makes it worthwhile to add Palat in ANA. I genuinely think teams across the league will agree. Its great you guys enjoy him , maybe in 2 years he’ll be movable if the cap goes up enough and one team is itching for leadership like we were

Feels a little cherry picked to ignore the more recent year, no? Fine to include those years in addition, but I wouldn’t cut it out entirely
I think these two comments are true from a statistical pov:
1. Killorn is undoubted a higher point producing player than Palat
2. This past year, Killorn’s team had a better relative performance with him on the ice vs Palat’s team with him, though in previous years, Palat held the vantage.
I wouldn’t anticipate Killorn’s contract to be attractive at all in the open market. With similar cap, that would imply Palat’s would be one that teams would altogether avoid, even with a reasonable sweetener. I’m not sure I have much more to say tbh. Wish you and your devils good luck

Let’s also be real that there’s a reason no ANA fans are posting Zegras trades on this platform, it’s because he isn’t available. We need him and value him highly. If you’re calling for an unavailable 23 year old we badly need, the ask is going to be high. If ‘24 1st and Foerster isn’t worth it to you I toootally get that. But that’s probably what it’d take for the Ducks to come wider moving him

First, big credit for a creative MTL post that isn’t a regurgitated Zegras trade 🙏
If Lev slipped and MTL were at 5, they’d have to be absolutely certain CBJ wouldn’t take Levshunov, and I don’t see how that’d be possible. If he’s there at 3 I can’t imagine they take the risk of getting fancy with that pick.
If he’s gone, my guess is they snag Lindstrom and address RHD some other way (like FA, or trying to move up with the EDM pick).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>So anaheim brought in a bad contract because they needed to get a veteran short term. Palat is nearly 2 years younger than Killorn, better now, and cheaper.
Killorn contract= one anaheim is willing to take on because cup winning leadership
Presumably Palat would fall under the exact same umbrella.
Saying anaheim wouldn't take a free 1st for a virtually identical type of asset they willingly took on in free agency doesn't seem to check out.</div></div>
Yes, they decided to overpay one veteran $6.4M who outproduced Palat by 77% at the time on a per game basis, with zero draft compensation going out the door to do so. If they didn’t already fill the shoes of a cup winning veteran, I’m sure a 77% discount for Palat for an equivalent overpayment would’ve been worth considering, which would be in the ballpark of $3.6M, again, for zero draft comp. However they now already have Killorn, and your offer here is Palat for $6M, not $3.6M 🤮
With Zegras, Terry, Gauthier, Vatrano, Killorn, Strome, Colangelo all on the wing, Palat is a $6M fourth line plug for 3 more seasons. Easily going to pass on him even with a late first to sweeten it. I really meant it that I’m glad you enjoy him. You’re going to have 3 more full seasons to enjoy him. Nobody’s touching that contract (just like how we’ll get to enjoy Killer for the remainder of his deal)

With Palat on the ice, NJD has generated 58% of xGoals 5v5 over the last 2 years. He hasn't been below 50% since his 14 games in 2012.
Killorn hasn't been above 50% since 2019.</div></div>
That’s suuuuper awesome, I’m stoked you’re so amped on him because I don’t see any way NJ is able to move that contract.
The key difference here is that everyone in ANA knows we had to overpay Killorn to come in the midst of a rebuild. We knew he wasn’t worth that full price tag even before the down year. I genuinely don’t know what to tell you if you think Palat is worth mote than 75% of his. Not even considering he’ll be like 36 when it ends
