PLD wanted 2 teams so there wasn't much leverage anyway, doesn't really matter if Nylander extension is included. Plus, you get an extra year at a very reasonable number.

SJS has a void in the top-4 once Karlsson is gone, and have been rumoured to be in the Dumba sweepstakes. Logic here, you flip Brodie at 50% for a nice haul at the deadline..

Rebuilding teams aren't going to give up multiple draft picks for ANY player.

San Jose is basically giving 3 mid to late round picks for a guaranteed 1st + a prospect at the deadline… they’d be absolutely stupid to not do that.

A big overpay for one year of Scheifele. San Jose doesn't need an ucpcoming UFA. Doubt if Brodie waives to a non playoff team not in the East anyway.
Totally unrealistic thinking the the Leafs allow another team to negotiate with Nylander. It just doesn't happen from contending teams allow a star player to negotiate with another team one year away from his contract.

They won't do it. What if Brodie gets injured? They're now out 3 draft picks.

San Jose has no use for Brodie. If you want to send him to San Jose, you're paying them for a cap dump. There are competing teams out there that could use Brodie that would likely be willing to give something up for him, but the Sharks are not one of them.

One comparable to this deal, the Copp deal to NYR, WPG got a 1st, 2nd and Barron at the deadline, Leafs get a full year of him for a similar cost. I think Brodie mulls over the idea of going to SJS, playing big minutes to up his value, and help SJS get a nice haul at the deadline while he gets to play for a contender..I agree with you on Nylander, but if AM's number is off the charts, you may be forced to make a decision rather than lose him for nothing.

Horvat was a UFA. So what? PPG player starts with a first, a good prospect and a roster player.

I'm not a Preds fan, was just pointing out the distinction. Fair enough on PLD, but he's also a C.

Dude, it’s a 3rd + 4th + 7th … you’re talking like it’s multiple high picks. Those picks have a very little chance of turning into NHL players. San Jose could easily take the deal and flip Brodie immediately for a 1st and a prospect. For that value; they’d be absolutely stupid to not take the deal.

Okaay, and this ask arguably exceeds that. As for the roster player, to Vancouver it was a wanted salary shed (as dumb as that is).

It doesn't matter. Draft picks are a chance at a NHL player, and all of those picks have value. A 3rd, 4th, and 7th turned into Jonathan Quick, Mikey Anderson, and Matt Roy for the Kings.

You're also completely ignoring the single most valuable asset in this trade, which is $5M in cap space. If Toronto wants to take back LaBanc in the deal, then I'm sure San Jose would be happy to accept.

If you value the picks so low, then the Leafs shouldn't have a problem accepting only one of them instead of three for Brodie. If Brodie would return a 1st and a prospect, then why doesn't Toronto just trade him for that return instead.

???? What is this fantasy about "losing a player for nothing". Matthew is an upcoming UFA as is Bertuzzi and Domi. Shouldn't they be traded by your logic, or the 100 other upcoming UFAs in the the league. Contending teams trade for upcoming UFAs all the team at TDL without expectation they will be signing those players. Contending teams try to noise in the playoffs, they don't worry about upcoming UFAs leaving.
Brodie....he's plays big minutes now for a good team. No advantage of him going to San Jose.
Yes, Rangers gave up a lot of him....but Jets were hardly cop contenders. And it certainly come with silly scenario of an extension. Copp went to free agency.

Now if I had my way, I might be in a sell mode for the Leafs big UFAs...especially last last month before so many teams were cap strapped and Matthews/Nylander didn't have N MTCs.,
But Leaf management/owners have definitely shown they are all all in with their UFA signings and no trades of their stars.

If Brodie is so valuable then why are the leafs not trading him for a 1st. Its not becuase you have so many future picks. SJ is tanking. Trade EK 65 and the D and goaltending is awful. perfect for a top 3 pick

Toronto wouldn’t get a 1st and a prospect for him because they wouldn’t be moving him at full value since they’d have to move him for cap reasons. But a team like San Jose wouldn’t have the cap implications and could retain 50% on him which is easily worth a 1st and a prospect.. David Savard was traded for a similar price to Tampa at the deadline and Brodie is Mike’s better than Savard is.

There’s no book on how to rebuild. The idea is you get better, younger assets. A 1st round pick has a much better chance than any of the 3rd, 4th, or 7th round picks to play in the league.

To the argument of “just accept one pick” - okay sure. So Toronto trades Brodie for the 3rd. You’re really gonna good a deal up over a 4th and 7th round pick? Like really. That’s nitpicking or anti-Leafs because it makes no sense.

Trotz wouldnt agree to that extension. Hes been on the record about hating these max term contracts. Value wise im not completely against it from a nashville standpoint. In terms of team needs, this doesnt really fit nashville. We need centers and tieing up a bunch of cap in another winger when all our best prospects are wingers seems foolish

Oh stop with the anti-Leafs stuff. Cripes. This whole thing where San Jose would be stupid to pass on the deal so they can gamble and eat a couple million in hopes his value suddenly explodes from a bunch of meh picks to two fine goodies doesn't need to be calling other ideas stupid. You guys pass off that notion all the time like it's easy as pie, but how often does that actually happen?

It’s not a gamble. Sharks could acquire him for a 3rd, 4th, and a 7th and flip him right away with 50% retained for a 1st and a prospect. That’s Brodie’s value right now. So basically San Jose is trading a 3rd, 4th, and a 7th for a 1st and a prospect.. that sounds pretty good for a rebuilding team.

(sigh)

Okay then, who can they magically turn right around and flip him to for this amazing and instant ROI? You're stating a theory as if it's fact, so you surely have all the particulars.

There’s a bunch of contenders that could use a reliable defensive defenceman. Top teams are always looking for defensive depth. Are you new to hockey? A 1st and a prospect is an easy price for Brodie at 50% retained.
