The cap squeeze teams are struggling with is mainly for this season. So Brodie at 5 million with 1 year left would probably have less value than Smith unless there is salary retained.

last team i did i managed to retain 50% and got a 2nd for brodie, that makes more sense imo. i cant see us lose a defensive stud for that little. but maybe we wont have the choice. all i know is that dumba isnt the answer, we have enough injury prone players as it is

I would think Vancouver would want the deal to be as close to dollar in, dollar out as possible since they're already $3.2M over the cap as we speak. This would put them about $5.2M over, meaning they'd have to dump out Tyler Myers to make it work - and I think when you factor in the draft capital you'd have to part with to make that work, it makes it a tougher pill to swallow.

I also don't see why the Sabres would do that deal. They've got Rasmus Dahlin, Mattias Samuelsson, and Owen Power as LHD currently under contract, with Erik Johnson, Connor Clifton, Ilya Lubushkin, & Henri Jokiharju as RHD (plus a few other tweeners like Kale Clague, Riley Stillman, and Jacob Bryson.) I can't see them giving up a draft pick to make that logjam even worse.
