<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dr_Invictus</b></div><div>If you compare the GSVAs of just the Flames and the Sabres, the sabres clearly have more young offensive talent. GSVAs are regressed over 3 years, and slightly rated towards offense (because goal prevention is a harder matric to capture, so their are just less stats to pull from). Below are the GSVAs of all payers that played on both teams that had a GSVA greater than 1.0. The interesting part is that if you filter that same list strictly off their defensive component, you don't hit a Buffalo player until 7th on the list (Rasmus Dahlin 1.1). He's actually the only Buffalo player on that list to have a positive defensive rating and a GSVA over 1.0. And somewhat Ironically, Tage Thompsons defensive rating is -19.3 (worst of the bunch). Weegar, Backlund, Tanev, Coleman, Toffoli, Huberdedau, and Mangiapane were all better Defensively. Obviously Calgary had an entirely different issue (scoring). But my point is that both Tanev and Backlund are exactly what Buffalo needs. They are two exceptional defensive players who want to win a cup and Buffalo had the 26th Goals Against last year, and the 28th ranked PK. Scoring isn't their problem. If Buffalo can solve their D and goaltending, they will be hoisting the cup . I don't know why everyone thinks they are not primed to be a contender.

Markstrom will bounce back. I have never seen a goaltender get a case of the yips like that before. The guy went from Vezina caliber performance one year, to allowing 11 goals on the first shot of the game last year. It was 100% mental. Honestly, the change of scenery would probably bring him back to form.

Player GSVA
Tyler Toffoli 3.4
Rasmus Dahlin 3.2
Tage Thompson 2.9
MacKenzie Weegar 2.8
Jeff Skinner 2.7
Alex Tuch 2.7
Mikael Backlund 2.4
Rasmus Andersson 2.4
Elias Lindholm 2.2
Jonathan Huberdeau 1.8
Nazem Kadri 1.6
Blake Coleman 1.5
Andrew Mangiapane 1.4
Noah Hanifin 1.4
Dylan Cozens 1.3
Chris Tanev 1.3
Owen Power 1.2
Jack Quinn 1</div></div>

First of all, these analytics are ridiculous
Just for example:
According to your numbers, Kadri is barely better than Coleman &amp; Skinner is better than Kadri
We both know that’s utter nonsense, so we can quit with that i hope

As for the ACTUAL POINT….
YOU even agree that we need to fix our goaltending
So adding 2 rentals without fixing the goaltending is a pointless endeavor that just leaves us losing in the playoffs &amp; without future young talent that could actually be helping us get the Cup when we are truly ready to compete for it

Markstrom has been up &amp; down for 4 years now,
AND he turns 34 mid-season
There’s no way to know if he’ll bounce back again,
or if his age is catching up to him &amp; he’s falling off a cliff
I’m not saying he WILL fall off a cliff
I’m saying NEITHER OF US know &amp; it’s a distinct possibility

The Sabres need a little more time to be legit contenders
This isn’t the year to trade our great young prospects for rentals- that would be dumb imo
We need to keep developing our good young talent,
just like we have been- bc we’re clearly on the right path

And if the *RIGHT* deal is there to be made,
then cool
But 2 good young assets for 2 rentals is a dumb move,
period
