Your entire premise is based on the idea that the Sharks need cap space. What are you thinking they need this cap space for?
We aren't going to be competing for next 2-3 years at least, so no need to sign big free agents in that time. Our prospect pool is coming along nicely but none of our young players will be in range of signing their big RFA contracts in the next 4 years. We currently have 14m in space with 17 players signed and no big money contracts to ink.
Karlsson is getting traded this summer and that will free up another 8 - 10m in space. Supposedly teams are inquiring about Couture and Hertl as well so their contracts might not even be around the full length. Even still Couture is only on the books for 4 more years and Vlasic only around for 3 more. Neither will get in the way of the rebuild and Hertl should still be a solid player once we are competing again. Every year the cap goes up their contracts get easier to fit in so its really not a problem.
The idea that the Sharks need to get out from under these big crushing contracts is outdated. The contracts are only an issue if we are trying to compete right now. Otherwise they just make them hard to move, which is a challenge, but doesn't mean we should thrown them away for free or for a single 2nd round pick.
