2425 - Harder to play against
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NYR1983</b></div><div>NYR definitely pass</div></div>
Sure, just a stand in really. Perri pick calculator put 3 years of 3.6m hit at an 18 OA pick value, and I figure NYR 25 1st will be lower than that. It doesn't matter though, it's more about the idea of a Goodrow dump being beneficial to SJ in a few ways beyond just the return.

I could see the SJ one happening, but likely not with retention. Taking back Matt Martin is fine to offset Duclair's cap hit, but the Sharks will want to use their last retention slot in a more lucrative trade.
Wahlstrom is struggling for sure, but probably is worth taking a chance on by giving him a change of scenery.

I'm not trying to change you're opinion of the player, but its incorrect to say he doesn't have plenty of cup experience. Between '21 and '22 playoffs he played 40 games for Tampa and was 5th among their D in ice-time. Solidly bottom pairing, but also decidedly not just a healthy scratch.

Retire under the sun
I really don't think this is good for San Jose. The Anderson and Gallagher contracts are significantly bigger headaches than the Vlasic contract because of the extra years. A 2nd and (2) 3rds isn't enough to take on either one of them with how many years they have remaining.
As for the other players coming from Montreal, I don't think SJ wants them. Harris is completely redundant, Primeau is ok but doesn't add a ton of value and Tuch is a 22 year old who probably won't play significant games in the NHL. I don't have anything against Primeau and maybe SJ would want him in a different trade but I wouldn't take on a bad contract to acquire him.
Overall its a lot of small pieces for taking on two big cap headaches, and not a great use of the cap space we gained in the Karlsson trade.

A 2nd and a 4th is pretty poor compensation for $19.5m in cap space, not to mention its $19.5m in real dollars owed too. And don't say the Sharks will get more value by trading him down the line either. If he was tradable for any kind of value the Montreal would just do that. Not to put that on you, but I see that argument here all the time and its almost always terrible.
The only way Gallagher comes to SJ is if a contract like Vlasic's is going back, and Montreal would still have to pay because we'd be taking 3 years of Gallagher and you'd be taking only 2 of Vlasic, and for less actual money than his cap hit.

Rumour Per Pagnotta
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Texas416_er</b></div><div>Yeah, this just seems odd, as rumors go. If they're getting a rental forward, Kunin seems like a lesser add than Duclair or Barabanov</div></div>
For what its worth, The Athletic put out an article today looking at Treliving's previous deadline tendencies. They came to the conclusion he was more inclined to target players with term than rentals. So not impossible he goes for a rental, but might look first for longer term solutions. I'm not claiming to know whether these Sharks players fit the bill, it was just something I found interesting.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DFinn91</b></div><div>It’s to bring in 2 legit top 6 wings to play with Eklund, which should help bring his game to another level. Increased depth also allows Couture to move to wing. That’s a pretty good top 9 forward group. If Bjorkstrand and Zuc don’t work out you can flip them to re coup some of the assets.</div></div>
Honestly, I just think its too soon to be adding short term players using long term assets. We'd be a little better, but I don't think enough to challenge for a playoff spot (That D is still pretty rough) and giving up those assets just prolongs the rebuild further.
Also both player's have trade protection and I doubt they want to come to San Jose.

I find this fairly confusing. Bjorkstrand is a fine player but he's 28, only has 2 years of team control (5.4m not cheap either) and we'd be giving up two premium assets for him. Maybe we're competitive in the final year of his contract, but that's a big maybe.
Zuccarello is 36 with 2 years on an extension that also isn't cheap. He's a very good player but this is a trade that moves us away from being competitive in the long run. If he was a UFA I'd say hell yeah sign him, otherwise I'd rather keep Ozzy and a 33-34 OA pick.

Per Quinn, Hertl had his surgery yesterday 2/14. Depending on what "several weeks" ends up being he could conceivably play before the trade deadline, but yeah probably ends up being after March 8th if at all this season.

Reclamation Projects
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JeffW</b></div><div>Can't afford him.
Also he just had a similar surgery to landeskog</div></div>
I won't pretend I know what I'm talking about, but Hertl's situation does seem different than Landeskog at least on the surface. Landeskog had knee surgery that was supposed to put him out for 12 weeks and it was a result of cut damage. It ended up being all season after set backs and then he had another cartilage transplant surgery that sidelined him for a second season.
Hertl in contrast was described as having loose cartilage in his knee that was causing him pain, but that playing on it would not cause additional damage (he's been playing on it all season). If the Sharks were gunning for the playoffs my guess is he would have kept playing through the pain and waited for the offseason. As it is they said he could be back after "several weeks", but I wouldn't be shocked if he took his time.
Not saying this should change your opinion on potential trades, just pointing out that I think Hertl's situation seems less dire than Landy's was.

I get what you're saying, but you're also not getting San Jose to use their last retention for only a 4th.

Tampa can afford to trade for a few players with 1 year left
Big no on the Zetterlund trade. Watson is 32 and has zero value to SJ. The late 1st two years from now is fine, but we'd probably be happy if we got a Zetterlund from it. He's only 24 and on pace for 22 goals on the worst team in the league? We're trying to add players like him, not send them away.

Sharks sell tiers
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ItsBreach</b></div><div>i think labanc and hoffman have more value than you think. sj won't be blown away by an offer, but hoffman at 50% (2250000) might fetch a 3rd/4th. he's been ok this year and could provide some offense to a struggling bottom 6 on a playoff team. labanc might be a bit harder, but since he's on an expiring deal, you take what you can get. he's another case of 50% (2362500) might get sj a 5th or 6th rounder, which would only be beneficial to the sharks</div></div>
San Jose only has one retention slot available, so using it on a deal that brings back a 5th or 6th would be a waste. Contenders with tight cap situations will pay a premium to fit a player in before playoffs, and it doesn't even have to be one of the Sharks trade candidates, we could be the third team on other trades too. A player like Hoffman might only be tradeable with retention, but I'm betting that isn't going to be the best return for using that last slot.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gaz</b></div><div>You get a prospect putting up respectable KHL numbers as well as the 4th. Goalie returns usually aren't super high in trades so anything more than a 3rd straight up or a 4th+ for a 1B goalie on an expiring contract is likely what you can expect a return to be.</div></div>
I respectfully disagree about a C-tier (maybe) prospect and a 4th being enough for the Sharks to want to move on from Kahkonnen. I just don't think 15 pts in 42 games is really all that exciting for a small 24 year old winger in the KHL.
The real stickler here is the retention slot. Its the Sharks only one and they are going to want to use it in a deal that creates more value for them than this, or on a player who's untradeable without it (Lebanc/Hoffman).

Blackwood Follow-Up
San Jose is going to be really reluctant to trade Ferraro. Along with Hertl he's the heart of the team, and culture matters in a rebuild. Trading Ferraro is going to have an outsized effect on morale/culture in the room and that's bad for developing guys like Eklund, Zetterlund, Emberson etc. Its one thing to trade aging vets like Burns and Karlsson, but Ferraro is only 25. It would send a bad message to the rest of the guys in the locker room in my opinion, so you really only do it for a massive overpayment. A 2nd, and the nebulous value of "what we might get" for Pesce isn't going to be enough I think. Especially not with Blackwood thrown in as well.

D CHANGE due to rumors
The Sharks wouldn't do that even without Ferraro included. Why give up a 2nd round pick (potential 1st) for a 33 yo who doesn't fit the rebuild, an ok prospect playing in the ECHL and two 5ths? I'd rather just keep the pick, hope NJ makes the conference finals and take a shot at drafting someone better than Voit.
