Sameulsson already gets an insane amount of defensive usage, so much so it kept getting him hurt. If anything, he needs some of that scaled back.

The sabres were top 3 in goals for and like bottom 5 in goals against. It adds more wins to the team if they pay up to jump from say 29th to 15th defensively, than it does to pay up to jump from 3rd to 2nd offensively (they already score plenty enough goals to win games)

In terms of balancing the roster, if Karlsson can play with Dahlin it probably makes things easier:

Dahlin-Karlsson
Power- top 4 RD*
Samuelsson-Lyubushkin

Everyone plays 20 min+, with Lyubushkin playing 14-16 min.


If Karlsson has to play with Samuelsson, then they have to find a viable partner for Dahlin who probably needs to be able to play at least 18 minutes.

*Probably not Pesce if they are paying that much for Karlsson but still someone who can play 20 minutes. Might be better to take less retention and pay less depending on Dahlin+Power's extensions and cap hit of the top 4 RD that they are looking to add.

I think people are going to be surprised how little San Jose will get back for Karlsson. At 11.5m a year I think ZERO teams would take him for free. That's my hot take.

Only 3-4 teams would take him at 9m a year. So even then his value wont be crazy.

At 7.5m he starts becoming very desirable and that's where I see his value really starting to take off.

Now if San Jose decides to do a full 50% retention, that's where they will get a serious haul for him. This right here is a very solid haul. Prospects are always questions marks. San Jose should be accumulating as many question marks as possible.

San Jose is AT LEAST 5 years away from competing. Prospects and picks should be what they go for. They get a lot of quality picks and prospects and some decent young players here.

What you're not understanding is that all those players and picks wouldn't be enough to just retain the 23 Million let alone get EK too... it's 23 Million and you're acting like it's no big deal LOL.
The list is pretty short for teams that can even afford to take on a player like EK, let alone be a team he'd be willing to waive to go to.
SJS will inevitably need to eat cap but what you've suggested is the kind of deal that gets ppl fired instantly!

dude sharks are starting a rebuild. this is maybe the ideal or dream return for karlsson although in any trade with Buffalo I would think sharks push HARD for Savoie given we know they really wanted him in 2022
