It’s basically a do-over on the traded Grandlund pick for moving back to where they expected to pick back at the deadline. Pens would be dumb not to take this trade.

i mean, the specific value there would vary from GM to GM. I guess it would depend on how many guys you have graded in that tier. If they feel the difference from 16 to 20 isnt going to take them away from a player they have graded highly, theres no reason to not snag the extra second. Just depends on how GMs grade guys in the draft. Personally, I probably wouldnt want to give up the 52nd based on where we are in the rebuild and who all could be available at 20. But who knows at this point what the draft looks like after 4. I think in this draft specifically we are gonna see guys falling and rising all over the place. I have seen way too many draft lists with no real consensus after the top 5 or 6 guys

I feel Pittsburgh would be the only one that would do that trade as they have no real good prospects and the difference between 16 and 20 might not be that bad. Chicago also has the extra picks this draft and future drafts to bundle a couple to move up for a specific player.
I think they might have a better chance of moving a couple of those seconds to get into the late first round.

In any case my previous comment said “ It’s basically a do-over on the traded Grandlund pick” which referred specifically to the second that was wasted in that deal. In the sense that you are acquiring a pick that is only 4 spots behind that lost draft pick that is not an oversimplification to say you are basically recouping that draft choice despite still bring on the hook for the rest of the contract.

Honestly though, this draft is insanely deep. Adding a 2nd round pick to move back 4 spots isn't a bad move at all, especially for an aging PIT team that has a pretty empty prospect pool, relative to most NHL clubs. Look where Snuggerud was drafted last year. Kid is a stud.

It depends on the results of the lottery, but targeting a D in that spot wouldn’t be bad.

Draft value charts peg this as a win for the Pens - per Dom's GSVA value chart, #20 + #52 = 5.5 GSVA; #16 + #144 = 4.9.

Obviously at the draft there's more complicating factors (who's on the board, who do you like, will your guy still be there at 20, etc) but as a pre-draft trade it's more than fair.
