I hate almost all of this for the Pens.
We're trading a young D with top 4 potential in POJ in exchange for Kasperi Kapanen 2.0. Gurianov had no offense in Dallas, and has no defense in Montreal. That's a contract we'd regret.
None of Petry, Rutta, or DeSmith are cap dumps. Being overpaid doesn't make you a cap dump, even though Petry and Rutta are. Petry's a legit 2nd pair D, Rutta's a legit 3rd pair D, DeSmith's a legit backup.
And playing with only one regular RHD sounds like a bad idea. I'd rather play Smith on his regular side anyway.
Actually, if there is a cap dump that exists here, it's Josh Anderson. The guy is one of the most one-dimensional forwards in the NHL. He provides no playmaking and less defense. MTL could be the one adding a 2nd instead, and the Pens would still be getting fleeced.
Domi's not my favorite choice for 3C. I like him as a winger, but I'd prefer a 3C to be more defensively responsible then he is.
Goaltending is a downgrade. By a lot. I don't trust Korpisalo to repeat this year at all. The last time he had consecutive seasons above a .900 SV%, the Penguins were reigning Stanley Cup Champs. And I don't expect Varlamov to succeed in a starting role on a (hopefully) contender at his age.
What it looks to me like we've done here is empty what little is in the cupboards to get worse.
