Acknowledging the Marner-Larkin chemistry from the all-star game

Kerfoot helps out with the cap plus he does add the benefit of being occasionally useful. Hirvonen, Voit and Steeves are on the cusp of having dynamic futures, but adding them and the 2023 1st could likely secure that retention, and it might not look too egregious if Dubas somehow manages to resign Larkin.

I think it’s funny that Toronto capfriendlies keep expecting that Larkin wouldn’t start with a first and knies.

Matthews to Detroit for a 2023 first, Adam Erne, Shai Buium and Mazur. - this is how you all sound.

Detroit has no reason to do anyone favours.

This is just hypothetical, and I don't think it's too far off given how Dubas made it quite clear that Knies is untouchable.

I mean then he doesn’t get larkin. You want someone’s best player you have to pay up. A bunch of scraps doesn’t get it done.

This is a late first, a bunch of B- or C level prospects and a cap dump.

No reason to ship out Kerfoot, he stays to play PK & 3W.
Larkin has a NTC so he’d have to agree to any move; Stevey Y is in a pickle - either give Larkin the deal he wants or move him @ TDL (Larkin holds the hammer, NTC) or let him walk for nothing.
Wings fans seem to forget how this process works - Larkin is calling the shots, not Stevey Y.

I think the likelihood of Larkin getting traded to the Leafs is very low, but Larkin has been around the league a long time - he knew what he was doing by saying that, especially referencing the Leafs ( which will and has set the Wings fanbase on fire)… letting Stevey Y know who’s in control of this situation. He’s a pending FA with full NTC “ give me what I’m worth or I walk and btw - I’ll decide if / where I go at TDL”

Or he does exactly what he did with stamkos, hold the line all the way to ufa. Nobody can offer more money to larkin in seven years then Detroit can in eight, so he can choose to make less and go elsewhere if he likes, but financially the money is on Detroit’s side.

I don’t know why anyone expects Steve’s playbook to be any different. We have seen this entire playbook before. We know it’s a risk he’s willing to take.

Could play out exactly like you say but situations not exactly the same…
Tampa was on cusp of dominant stretch, wings are clearly not.
Pending FAs leave all the time so that extra (8th) year is not as valuable as you think.
Cap is going up - in a major way - over next few years, so wouldn’t surprise me to see shorter term deals so guys get one more shot at FA when cap will be substantially higher

I agree this deal is a little more quantity than quality, however there's no basis for Knies and a 1st as a return, let alone a starting point.

The Horvat return is the ceiling for a Larkin return. Horvat had more points, double the goals, and defensively, Horvat is on par or better.

He was also betting on the fact Stamkos is kind of private and wouldn't want to live under the microscope of coming in and being the savior especially in Toronto media circus. Is Dylan Larkin that same guy (Haven't a clue) Yzerman knows though.

Idk, if he's taking a shorter deal, he's going to need to go somewhere where he can produce at a high rate considering his best production is slightly under PPG. So he'll likely want to join a team with superstars which likely means taking a one year deal at 6-7m or something like that.

Either way, I don't think Yzerman is going to trade his 1C and best player without getting a massive haul. He would likely just go down to the wire on trying to sign him, and either he does (by convincing Larkin/conceding to him) or loses him to FA. He's too important of a piece to just trade for whatever they can get.

Just because Knies is untouchable, doesn't mean you can pretend this underwhelming package of spare parts gets you Larkin.

You caught that too. So we pay more for Leafs advancing farther. What fricking joke.

If Leafs win the cup they get Seider and Raymond also.

I don’t get the argument - Stevey Y (who is far from the genius he’s made out to be) is better to let Larkin walk then trade him @ TDL? Understood he may want better return but letting him walk would be terrible mgmt. they’re missing the playoffs this year so no reason to keep him. If he’s not signed at the TDL, you have to move him & Larkin has a full NTC so can nix any deal (location) he doesn’t like

He's better off signing him which is the priority. They are trying to move towards contention and end the rebuild. Larkin isn't just one of their best players but he's also their 1C and it's not like they have a great 2C that can slide up. What that means is the best offer for him at the TDL might not be enough to make trading him worth it. Might that lead to him walking for nothing, yes, but that's obviously not the plan. There's obviously going to be more pressure to give him what he wants but they have to consider is he really worth it at that point.

Obviously, no GM wants to let value assets walk for nothing but when they want a player to stay the chances of that happening are increased.
