Say what you want about him, he's still a very good player.

Leafs pass. Engvall has a nice role on their team and is a ufa at years end. They need that cap space in the offseason to retain a few guys. No thanks on Pearson.

Now Kuzmenko or Horvat on the other hand would be interesting to the Leafs.

Non value contracts can't be traded unless cap is returned.

This isn't for free as far as I'm concerned. Miller is the only piece of the deal going Pittsburgh's way that has any significant value to the Pens. Zucker has been super consistant this year for us. Malkin's line has been mostly dominant, and Zucker is a big part of that. With how good the top 6 is right now, I don't want to change it.
Ruhwedel is an excellent 6/7th defenseman imo. I was initially skeptical of us signing Rutta because I thought Ruhwedel was deserving of a permanent spot in the lineup, and even now he's very reliable defensively.
Blueger is one of the few bright spots in the Pens bottom 6 and is a supremely important part of our PK, which is one of the best in the NHL. He was so important during the Seattle expansion draft that he was protected over the likes of Zucker, Tanev, and McCann. He's still that important.
While Miller is without question the best player in the deal, he's had some prominant defensive struggles this season and the extention Vancouver signed him to is not particularly appealing. I think the value in this deal is reasonably close, I just don't think it's the kind of move that will help Pittsburgh at all. They don't need more top 6 firepower, they need to shore up their depth. This trade does not accomplish that.

Yeah, he's pretty good, but not better than Horvat and Kuzmenko and I'd rather keep them than him. This one signing may ensure that the Canucks are a middle of the pack team for years.
