Yeah, I mean, futures are fun, but Washington has Ovi, Backstrom, Oshie, Carlson, Kuznetsov, Kuemper, and Wilson signed for multiple years, all of whom have NTC's/modified NTC's. That doesn't necessarily mean they're contenders, but prospects and picks are for peasants. I also wouldn't exactly call a late 1st, a pending UFA forward, and Robertson. *IF* the Caps retained 50% for 1.5 years of Wilson, I've gotta think the return is higher end.
most likely true yes. I knew its likely a no, and to be clear i'm bored and 1000% know all of this will not happen. But hypothetically, if I'm them, I keep some guys and make moves around the fringes that might bring in some value - Wilson, Mantha, Strome, possibly even Kuzy if Backstrom comes back and is good enough, Jensen, and so on. So you still have a formidable team around Ovi to go get that record and stay in the hunt for the playoffs maybe, but move some of the younger guys still in their prime that you could use to at least help to plan for the post Ovi-Backstrom-Carlson era.
I decided to give them another NHL body for that reason in Kerfoot that they could either keep and maybe extend, or flip at the deadline. Then with Robertson again they very well might go for a better prospect if they went their route, but he's an NHL ready prospect and few teams will give those away. They at least get a guy to play and maybe help the team stay afloat short term while starting to think about the long term.
Probably the case that the value is off in favour of the Leafs, just trying to explain my rationale for at least the base premise of a Wilson deal.
